They are going to end password sharing Which they have been saying for a while But I guess they did enough testing and have figured out how they want to do it

Spoiler: Its stupid and will probably cost them a good amount of viewers

It's probably about 2-3 years too late for this to be a good idea. When they still had a decent market share and giving up Netflix meant losing access to a lot of content, they could likely have gotten away with cracking down on password sharing. Now, though, after so much content has been gobbled up by other services and they've already got a lot of people questioning their subscriptions after several price increases, I expect quite a lot of people will rather give it up than pay the extra fee/full price for an account.

I didn't know it was paywalled. I got this from a different topic. When I went in earlier to look at the article myself, it seemed to work fine, without asking for anything like money...

I just checked, and didn't have to pay or sign in or anything...

Yeah. I don't think it will go well. Even a few years ago, it probably wouldn't have gone as well if the other services came out right after this happened... And while they said the other streaming services will follow, it probably depends on what happens to Netflix. If Netflix loses a good amount of the money, the others may hold off on doing it for a little while, if they even decide to ever do it...

The article wasn't paywalled for me either. I think it is one of those sites that may give you so many free articles to read in a certain time period, then they will block you. I've run across a few sites like that. It will be interesting to see how this affects Netflix in the US. I personally don't have it or use it at all. My parents use my sister's account though, so I am sure I will hear about that eventually if they have to pay for it.

Chrome will be trying to kill adblockers this year because they get advertising money. Since Edge is based on chromium, that leaves the door open for Firefox or Brave to be the new browser of choice.

Yeah. I was thinking that might be the case with the article. It happens sometimes

As for how it will affect things in the US, I think they may lose some subscribers. Some will still keep their accounts if it doesnt affect them in any way. And a few may get their own account. But I think many will also leave. This could make it hard for people to watch Netflix anywhere else but home unless they want to pay extra to have a second home on Netflix I see some paying the extra fee if its low enough, while many others just leave. I also think many will opt for a lower tier. Many people paid for a higher tier so they could have multiple screens using NetFlix at the same time. That almost becomes useless unless in the same house So, many will get a lower price if the higher tiers dont let them share with people outside the house anymore

Probably Bit if it dies, itll be a slow death Most people wont drop
It immediately But the amount of people watching will fall, since many will have to stop watching, but wont get their own account Many people who arent affected will probably keep it But I also assume it will affect plenty of people

Probably for home use Though, I know many companies use it. So, it might stay functional for a while because of that

Isn't Brave a chromium-based browser as well? I use it, and it is pretty darn similar to Chrome. I may be wrong about it. But I thought I read it was built by someone that worked on Chrome in the past, but left and decided to make Brave.

Alternatively, the executives and shareholders can milk rapid, unsustainable growth for as long as they can, then abandon the company to die once the value peaks and move on to the next company that they'll milk. The people making decisions like this aren't the ones that stand to suffer in any meaningful way if the company goes under, and in many cases they stand to gain more by bouncing from bursting bubble to bursting bubble than by trying to maintain moderate, sustainable revenue. They aren't incompetent so much as they don't care about what consumers want. This is, in fact, capitalism working as intended.

My best guess is they will save money from server costs by cutting everyone off, while also opening up the flood gates for those people to pay for themselves. I'd imagine even if they didn't get a sub boost they'd still save money.

As for chrome, i feel like a growing majority of its users are on an android phone with zero ad blocking, not a computer. I don't even own a computer and use Chrome because idc.

All of this is said with little knowledge BTW. Just occams razor.

Basically this Why try to keep a company running, when you can instead just get a large sum and bounce before you lose anything

Basically, its when someone that isnt you used your account to watch stuff. You can use as many devices you want in your home. But now, they are making it so that if someone watches it a lot somewhere else that isnt your house, they have to make it a second home to continue watching after two weeks. Which will then make your bill go up

I think they mentioned they didnt want to make it too non-user friendly Having to do that every time would suck for the people that use it pretty regularly. And could lose them some customers. And, on many cases, still wouldnt end password sharing. Anyone they would lose to MFA, would probably be lost due to what they are doing now. But Im sure some people would still share. I think more people would share if they just used MFA instead of what they are doing. And MFA would cause more people to leave. I try to avoid it for most of my normal sites, tbh I cant imagine having to do that every time I log in

Seems like it's going to fail the same way DRM usually fails.

Account Sharing is like piracy. The person using the account is unlikely to want an active subscription.

Netflix isn't losing a potential subscriber with account sharing, but they are losing free word-of-mouth for their shows without it.

I wonder if the word-of-mouth would be worth more than the server and licensing costs they may save?
