Considering my negative views of Midsommar, I'm not exactly going to say I'm looking forward to Beau is Afraid. It looks... very strange. I get the impression, personally, of perhaps this being a story about a person dying and this is Aster's take on the near-death experience. That's just my early feelings looking at the trailer though and not knowing much else about this film.

I will say that it is at least an original property. A lot of the biggest releases coming this year are sequels, prequels or reboots. There's like no shortage of them. Scream 6, The Exorcist, Evil Dead Rise, Nun 2, Insidious 5 (or 3, whatever), Saw 10.

2022 was a pretty great year. We're still missing out on a few of the movies from last year but I can't say I can commit to watching those I missed (didn't even do that in 2021). Hopefully this year's best film didn't already come out.

I'm also very down on Midsommar, but I'm still looking forward to Beau is Afraid just because it seems like a big departure from Ari Aster's other works.

Gimme that Skinamarink and The Outwaters though. Those are completely original independent movies and look like they'll be awesome.

Genny and I tried it out and... yeah.

Horror films like these just aren't for me I guess, but I wanted to give it a chance. Just a bit of a slog for me to sit through and very, very little payoffs to be had. I've mentioned before how I don't really like movies that make you ask too many questions walking away from them; I like to be enthralled. You should leave the viewer with things to think about, but that shouldn't be all you do either. At least that's how I derive my enjoyment from things.

Apparently there's a shorter film on Youtube called Heck by the writer/director which is basically like a shortened version of Skinamarink, but at nearly 30 minutes long I think that's probably still too much to sit through for me. I could see this concept working on a short scale, like 10 minute range. I think if you put it at that length and keep the small amount of "jumpscares" in there, it might be more pleasurable. That said, I'm still always a little surprised when a really artsy film like this relies on what could be categorized as "cheap" scares with loud noises.

I dunno, I didn't really notice any real plotholes. I think everything ended up making good sense to me. I will say... I dunno, another "dad bad" story is kinda eh to me, but it is well executed

Like with Searching, saying this is a horror movie is... a little hard for me. Certainly it picks up and becomes more like one at points, but it's still questionable.

oh it's definitely not a horror movie, I just talk about it in this topic because there's a lot of overlap between horror and this, which is really a crime thriller

the issue I had is that the plan the dad had to come up with is so insanely complex that once you start to actually plot it out. He met a guy in prison, used a fake identity pretending to be his rehabilitation counselor, got the guy he met to match with his ex on a dating profile that he somehow knew she'd be using over a decade since he'd last seen her, and then somehow manipulated the dating app algorithm enough to match with her at the same time she was actively looking for someone, then had him do a fake relationship for months, including having him divulge his real life criminal history, then stole a car, searched out an aspiring actress that looked near identical to his wife, convinced her that the whole thing was some secret indie movie, flew them both out to Columbia for several days, then staged a fake kidnapping in another country using people that were never identified. That is so so so many steps and any of them going wrong, which most of them should have, would've derailed the entire plan. And even if the plan DID work... how did he afford any of it? He was in prison for 12 years, his house was shown to be in complete shambles, and yet he managed to pay or somehow convince this guy to put on this insanely complex and lengthy plan for months, and on top of that bought a full system of surveillance for his home, two international plane tickets and upscale hotel booking. Like yeah, the latter was taken out of her account, but how would he even know she had the money for all of that? Again, he hadn't seen her for well over a decade. And all of that required him to have the undying loyalty of just some guy he met in prison. Why would Kevin go along with all of this? I'd have to assume he was getting paid for it, because it's not like he'd be blackmailing him given they met each other in prison. And if it was just on the faith that he would get paid months later after the fake kidnapping, that's an even bigger leap in logic for the characters. And all this with the end goal of... locking the mother in a room, and then locking his daughter in another room? What was the ultimate objective? If he was just crazy, how would he have planned out such a massive, massive criminal conspiracy with so many moving parts?

All that's to say I did really enjoy the movie, nothing really hit me until after the credits when I stopped to actually think through everything

I never took his "Jimmy the church guy" thing as legit and assumed Kevin was in on the scheme all along. I don't believe he tricked Kevin into it; Kevin was a career con-artist and I think he willfully was participating. After all, when he believed he was talking to him but wasn't, he said he did everything to divert suspicion away from him. I also don't think he needed to manipulate the algorithm, he simply knew enough about his ex-wife to give Kevin the perfect combination to match with her

Finally watched Something in the Dirt and as expected I absolutely loved it. It actually reminded me of a more absurdist Lake Mungo, complete with a similar gut punch ending. The web this movie weaves is unreal and the way it just keeps spiraling out of control left me absolutely bewildered at certain points, while at the same time just being this interesting two-hander character piece. Definitely thematically similar to all their past films - Benson & Moorhead's takes on the mundane slowly and steadily brushing into contact with the cosmic unknown continually gives me stuff to chew on constantly.

Planning to see our third horror film of the year Monday with Fear... the early reviews, both critical and audience wise, seem pretty abysmal though. It would take an especially bad film to unseat Skinamarink from the bottom of my list this year though. I say that understanding the film just "wasn't for me", but it was probably the worst theater going experience of my life given the nature of the movie and the pace/length.

But here's hoping for fans of super indie experimental horror! Maybe Fear will somehow do it.

The Outwaters is probably going to be extremely polarizing like Skinamarink too. To set expectations, from a review I read without spoilers, it's got a LOT of the character building BS in most found footage movies with only hints at what you'll get that almost becomes too much. But in the last part of the movie, apparently it's done so amazingly well that it's really an experience to behold. The reviewer said it's unlike any found footage horror ever made and it's just a full on assault of the senses during the final act.

I thiiiink I'll end up liking it, but I have a lot more patience with stupid found footage shit than most.

I just saw Infinity Pool! I really, really liked it. There's a very clear vision and it just goes far to make you feel extremely uncomfortable. It also has a lot of themes behind it that I think are done extremely well.

A completely bizarre film, but it feels really memorable. I think I'll end up thinking about this one for a while. I think they nail the final scene just perfectly, and when you think you know what may happen, they surprise you.

Also, Mia Goth once again puts on a positively incredible performance. They need to start casting her in more mainstream stuff because she really feels like a step above move actresses.

I think if you want something so fucking weird, you'll come out of this movie liking it.

finally watched Speak No Evil and it was chilling

I think what made this one stand out is that it's the exact opposite of the typical horror trend where you'll be sitting in the audience, watching the future victims do things they obviously shouldn't be doing. Where you sit there and yell at the screen "don't open the closet!" or "don't walk into the woods!" Here I was just constantly thinking "just do SOMETHING." Run without turning back, fight back. And there's so much buildup to it the whole way through, not just the weird couple being killers, but the main couple being unwilling to stand up for themselves. Their daughter gets her tongue cut out and gets kidnapped right in front of them, and they basically just cry and accept it. Even at the very end, when they're told to strip and walk down into the quarry, they just do it. Like they specifically have nothing left to lose, they know the couple is just going to kill them anyway, but they still aren't willing to fight back. They weren't tied up! They weren't injured beyond like two punches to the husband! The killers weren't even armed! If they had just took off right there, they might have gotten away! So when that last line of why he did it all comes, "Because you let me," it just hits so hard. And then the sequence of them just being slowly, brutally killed by throwing rocks at them from the distance, a literal depiction of them standing there and just taking it, it just drops your stomach.

Yeah, I definitely came away feeling the same thing about it. It's really an interesting way to portray a horror like that.

The way they sprinkle little things about the father just refusing to stand for anything too is great as well. The way they also make the kids be obedient and silent and taking it just like the parents did by ripping out their tongues. Completely twisted.

Also the best part of the movie and something I still quote. "That's not dancing." Such a weird, weird part of that story that feels so over the top to the point you just laugh even though it's not really anything that should be funny.

So Fear wasn't nearly as bad as the review scores would have you believe, at least not its RT score. I guess that's all based on only positive versus negative reviews though, which is kinda difficult. It's just one of those films I wouldn't give an thumbs up or a thumbs down to, but if you're a critic it has to be Fresh or Rotten.

Ultimately, I think it's a lot like Snake said. There's an interesting premise here, and at times it seems like it's being executed well. I think the shortcomings of the film are that it's just too short, so the back half is really loaded with too many lightning quick scenes after the first acts of the film are more of a slow burn. It's hard to be that slow out of the gate when your run time is listed at around 90 minutes. The acting also leaves something to be desired of at times... I think it's mostly that no one in the film is really good enough to portray the main characters. The actors portraying the supporting cast feel like they do a better job, probably because they have less screen time and don't have to do as much. The film also sadly has final girl syndrome which I am so done with at this point. But, it definitely didn't illicit hang-wringing or questions like "what am I doing with my life", so it was no Skinamarink!

Mia Goth in X, I'd say no, but in Pearl definitely a yes.
Yeun in Nope was great but I'd give to Keke Palmer first
Collette and Pugh are obvious
Midthunder and Abdul-Mateenis are incredible and I'm really surprised they got called out here
Moss and Blunt are both excellent but I wouldn't put them quite on the same level as some others here
Cage is out of place here, he was great in this but it was less putting on an impressive performance and more being loud and bizarre. Absolutely should've gotten awards for music and cinematography though

Biggest exclusions: Anya Taylor-Joy in The Witch, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse, Agathe Rousselle in Titane, Niamh Algar in Censor, Jessie Buckley in I'm Thinking of Ending Things

Mia Goth deserves so many awards for the scene where they hold up the bus, to the scene where she just absolutely eviscerates the lead while she eats fried chicken on the hood of a car. Just absolutely masterful stuff. I think she's going to start blowing up into bigger stuff after this. I feel like too many people are taking notice of her despite her just being in horror. Hopefully she has a good agent.

  1. Nobody's died yet! Don't know if that's me doing things right or just that things aren't actually as dangerous as they seem so far. Seems like it's always either Jacob or Emma that's in danger
  2. Honestly I like most of the characters more than I thought I would. Max and Laura have a surprisingly strong relationship, Jacob did something real dumb but he's surprisingly funny and likeable, Emma too, the only characters I've really disliked are Dylan (who goes back and forth between funny and annoying) and Ryan (who started off strong in the first chapters as the most level-headed and reasonable of the group but has spent the last couple chapters being whiny). Best characters are probably Laura and Kaitlyn
  3. What is the deal with this supposed Ryan/Dylan/Kaitlyn love triangle? Like Ryan/Dylan I get, there's a lot of setup for Dylan pining after Ryan, but Kaitlyn? Kaitlyn and Ryan have said maybe two words to each other the entire game? Like around chapter 6-8 other characters started talking about Ryan and Kaitlyn and I honestly assumed I must've just gotten the names mixed up because there hadn't been even a hint of that prior in the game (beyond the option to have Ryan kiss her in truth or dare, which I didn't take because, again, Dylan had interest and she had expressed none)
  4. so the werewolf thing I mostly get and it's cool, if a little played out. But what's with all the glitchy ghosty stuff? I was thinking that was another part of the mystery but now I'm like 80% of the way through the game (I'm just assuming 10 chapters given what's left in the clues/tarot list) and it has yet to give even a slight hint as to what the werewolf story might have to do with everything glitching weird and there being weird ghostly sightings and sounds
  5. What was with the weird Dylan thing where he was like "oh yeah back home I'm actually hyperintelligent and I just pretend to be dumb and aloof here to get people to like me" but then he just continues to be actually dumb and aloof the rest of the game. Like he has the chance to potentially radio for help and instead of taking it seriously he just acts like it's a prank call as if he hadn't just had that heart to heart about not actually being that way 5 minutes earlier
  6. There have been a couple very minor hints about miners and I swear to god I do not need another fucking horror story caused by a collapsed mine jesus christ
  7. minor (ha) thing but this game is so dark that I have to have the game's brightness almost the whole way up just to see what's going on. There's a difference between having shadows to add to the dread and just having the environment be a solid black screen
  8. I feel like I'm missing a bunch of clues. The Dark Pictures games have a lot of flaws but I didn't appreciate how helpful their clue charts were
a lot of that was negative but that's mostly because it's easier to point out the negative that the positive. Overall I am definitely enjoying it and have laughed a good bit, and most of the performances are great. I love the path screen on here (the custom VHS boxes are so good and I get excited whenever a new one appears) and the facial recognition tech continues to be top notch
