A bit disappointing use of generic tropes (jump scares, the detective, the unbelieving fiance) but when the film leaned heavily into the psychological side I was really digging it. The birthday party scene was so messed up and sad and scary. That was great. (Has anything good ever happened at a horror movie birthday party?) Sosie Bacon's performance as a whole was great. It has a very dysfunctional family, fucked up intersection of sex and religion, and a future jewish director growing up in the American southwest, who was very affected by an intense movie scene in a theater as a young child (in Ari's case, Dick Tracy). PrivateBiscuit1 01/09/23 2:19:14 AM #36:	I was convinced to rent Landlocked which just came out. It's a very low budget horror that is probably the slowest burn movie I've ever witnessed. It has like 2 really good parts but that's about it. I don't think it was worth the rental despite good reviews I saw. It's entirely too artsy but also not and it's just not... tremendous? Like I get the overall point of it, but they really should have drip fed more stuff throughout the film to at least give a sense of intrigue or leave us guessing.
