Boy it sure is a good thing that one of the largest European countries didnt separate itself from the EU and broader European community explicitly to seek stronger ties with America right before all the instability in the US kicked off in earnest!

Oh.

In all seriousness, the solution for Europe is to come together stronger, separate from both the US and Russia. Luckily that is now happening and we are seeing moves towards things like European energy independence. And yeah that includes the UK gearing back towards Europe. Itll happen (because brexit is a massive failure) but its a long term project.

I think one of the problems Western Europe has is it has let the United States subsidize its defense. Western Europe has been able to neglect defense spending due to Nato

If the US starts to crumble some of Western Europe is going to need to triple or quadruple defense spending immediately which is going to be rough

The Hill isnt a liberal website, Corrik.

Funny enough, people across the spectrum assume that it is, but the numbers dont shake that way:

https://www.allsides.com/news-source/hill-media-bias

The Hill famously posted MANY editorials by Trump staffers and mouthpieces during his term.

A particular memory I have is of a friend sharing an article from Trumps press Secretary saying If the left wing Hill is saying this, you know Dems are in trouble lol.

This is hilarious, The Hill is so obviously written from a faux-liberal perspective by conservatives. I followed them for a bit and it became transparently obvious one of their main strategies was trying to get hate clicks from liberals

To be fair NATO is also strongly supported by its second largest military Turkey, a very stable country with no problems.

Yeah though, there needs to be more European defence co-operation that goes outside of NATO. The EU already covers mutual defence but that can be strengthened.

Did you know, for instance, that post-brexit the UK and EU have no formal defence pact? The UK has an existing one with Ireland and signed treaties with Sweden and Finland after Russia invaded Ukraine but thats it. It is mind boggling that they havent signed a formal defence agreement yet, given how many times Trump threatened to collapse NATO. Signing a defence agreement with the EU is an obvious win for an incoming Labour government.

LS, what do you mean that Ireland has really expensive housing? I've been occasionally browsing homes in Ireland for the last few years and have always been amazed at how cheap it is - how you can get what looks like a very nice house with some land for a price that would get you maybe an apartment in California. Is there some tax for foreign buyers that I'm not aware of? Or is my perspective just miscalibrated from living in California?

LOL by what metric is The Hill left?

In 2016 it was the 2nd most shared news outlet by Trump supporters per a Harvard Analysis behind only Breitbart and ahead of Fox News. (Said Harvard study, conducted in 2017, evaluated The Hill as center-right at the time. Though later, around the first Trump impeachment re: Ukraine reporting came out that the owner was interfering in editorial decisions to be more pro-Trump among other scandals that pointed toards right wing influence/power there)

In Dublin a cramped studio will run you 1,000+ per month in rent, and a normal sized one bed apartment will be 1,500+. For buyers its not as bad but still very, very expensive with an average price of 500,000. It at least was more expensive than London for a while.

Now, outside of Dublin its much cheaper, though prices are rising everywhere. Its a major crisis and basically the central issue politically here for the past few years.

Your source has it on the left moreso... and it is only weighted to the center by self described left. If you view CNN as not liberal, then using this source at all is just pointless for your own argument.

That said.

Republicans rated The Hill as Lean Left on average, while Democrats and Independents rated The Hill on the left side of Center.
A total of 924 people from across the political spectrum people who identified as Left, Lean Left, Center, Lean Right, or Right rated the bias of The Hill. The weighted average was -0.76, on a scale from -9 to 9. This is in the Center category, and close to Lean Left. The middle 50% of responses lied between -3.13 (Left) and -0.02 (Center).

The middle deviations of responses landed all on the left side of the spectrum.

Our February 2020 Blind Bias Survey showed that participants who rated themselves as Lean Right and Right thought The Hill's content is Lean Left, but not by much. Those who self-identified as being in the Center perceived The Hill's content as being on the border line of Center and Lean Left. Those who describe themselves as Left see The Hill's content as Center; those who describe themselves as Lean Left see the content as between Lean Left and Center.

If you view yourself as left, you view it as center. If you lean left, are center, or are right... you see it as going towards lean left.

Committing felonies to misrepresent your residence is obviously a bad thing. She should not be able to run and if the party knew this they're fucking idiots for not stopping it.

I have no issue calling that out. Though also if you're trying to act like that's on parity with the stories posted here about GOP state reps (nevermind how the context places it in a much larger narrative about the actions the party is taking on all levels - national, state, and local) then lmfao.

In my opinion, this is a ridiculous prosecution. Who cares whether she spent more time at her residence in her district or her place outside the district. If she didn't have a place in her district at all that would be one thing, but she does; the prosecutors are just claiming she didn't spend enough time there.

It's not open and shut at all, or if it is it's in the other direction. Residence is about the intent of the person. For example, college students may have a residence at their parents' home because that is where they return during the Summer, on breaks, etc. and that is where they subjectively view as their home and to which they intend to return.

She has a place in the district. She declares that it is her home. Unless she's confessed that it isn't or something, I don't see how a jury could find her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Her residence does not have to be the place where she spends the most time - for example, DJT transferred his residence from New York to Florida at a time when he actually spent the most time in DC. Dick Cheney transferred his residence from Texas to Wyoming so he would be eligible to be VP under Bush. It was a subjective thing.

Is misrepresenting your place of residence election fraud? When I think election fraud I think illegally inflating or suppressing the vote. But I'll set aside the semantics here and say it should certainly be disqualifying even if I think a philosophical argument exists that a constituency should be free to elect a representative for themselves even if they don't live there. (Same kinda lines to which I would argue term limits are anti-democratic)

But do I, for example, think the crime of saying you live in a district you don't (which appears to be due to redistricting) is less concerning than a crime "of a personal nature" when said personal nature is, say, "grooming and raping an adopted minor" ( https://www.thedailybeast.com/south-dakota-state-senate-candidate-joel-koskan-accused-of-molesting-family-member ) like the story I posted the other day? Yeah.

tl;dr: Given I have some philosophical issues with questions of candidate eligibility, yeah, I would personally consider a crime of that nature to be less concerning than some other types of crime. I'm not saying you should get away with it at all, but I'm also not putting it in the same category as illegally modifying a vote count which is where I think most people go to when you say "election fraud."

Also, I feel like oftentimes highlighting some of the instances - certainly when I do so - is placing it within the context of what the GOP is doing and plans to do.

Like in the above, the GOP is running heavily on anti-trans rhetoric and policy under the pretext of "protecting the children" and I think cases like the one I highlighted show the hypocrisy and projection it all is. Even as you have Florida banning gender-affirming care and discussed making a registry for trans kids (and even a "and maybe we should do this for adults as well) and how GOP states across the country are following in their footsteps.
