they are if you wanna buy a modchip

but it'll probably be years before some exploit is found for those switches

honestly the only reason why the first version was hackable is because they used an off the shelf part of the tegra x1 and didn't close all the holes, otherwise nintendo has been on the level to prevent exploits this go around

I'm still slowly playing XC2. I've made it to the final boss, but I've just been meandering around doing any quests I can. Still missing 3 named blades and they're all from random cores and annoying to get.

As for watching, I'm just watching Brooklyn Nine Nine for now. Finished up most of what I wanted to watch from the last season, so just waiting for the next one to end.

I loved almost everything about XC2, except the randomized aspect of getting some of the named cores. I did everything possible in the game minus getting a couple named blades and doing their associated quests. It just became way too tedious to keep trying for them and wasnt fun. What was a real bummer for me was that one of the named cores I didnt get was KOS-MOS and I really wanted that one.

Really looking forward to playing through XC3 in the future since I enjoyed the first two so much, but I want to get through Triangle Strategy (which I own but havent started) before I buy XC3.

KOS-MOS was the only core I didn't get. Well I also didn't do NG+ so I didn't get those blades either. That, the slow menu, and the last 3rd of the story are my only big complaints about XC2. Best mainline game. X was very uneven with some of the best and some of the worst parts of the series (fuck you bomber quest).

My initial frustration was when rex just gave up as if that was even an option. Like, if you give up at that point, you die, you realize that right? Like, I understand the story beat they were going for, but it was unnecessary and they got there in a way that kind of ruined the character. After that it's mostly ok until the very end where they try to shoehorn in a reason to sacrifice important characters and Rex reasonably doesn't like it but gets stopped by like a 20 foot gap somehow (and I think he still has their core crystal anyway). And as if the sane writer walked back in the room too late, they almost immediately undo that stupid sacrifice and they are actually fine magically. I don't know why xenoblade story wants me to be punished for beating the game but they try this shit in every single one. I won, let me actually win dammit. Granted, the ending of 3 was far and away the worst in the series but 2s was still pretty bad.

Having replayed it recently (NG+ ahead of 3's launch, along with doing Torna for the first time), the blade summoning is much, much better now than it was at launch, when you couldn't even skip the summoning animation. I was able to get all of the base game blades pretty easily by farming up a stack of legendary crystals before the animation was patched, but the NG+ blades took another couple stacks to get. It was definitely tedious (especially where they don't give you a keep/release option when you summon them, so you periodically have to leave the menu to go release a bunch) and I don't think the system as implemented was a good way to achieve what they were going for (to make successive playthroughs different), but it was definitely better than it used to be.

What bugs me most is how bad the pacing is, both in gameplay and story. It takes far too long for the game to evolve past "you have three arts, sit here and wait for them to recharge," and even when it does, so many of the mechanics that actually make the combat go smoothly (double art recharge pouch items, reliable breaking, cancelling between arts...) still don't show up until pretty late (and with horrible tutorials that basically mean you need to consult outside sources to understand how all the mechanics work). Eventually, it gets there and it's really fun, but it's a real slog to get there.

Meanwhile, there barely even is a story before the last third of the game. It takes way, way too long to get past "bad guys are trying to destroy the world, let's stop them!" and actually explore why that's happening. The last third is then really interesting because those bad guys get meaningfully developed and the game starts exploring the themes that actually make it good, but there's so much nothing to wade through beforehand. Even then, with the exception of Nia and Pyra/Mythra, the party is extremely one-dimensional and doesn't develop at all, which is a real let-down after Xenoblade 1 focused so heavily on Shulk's development as a really interesting protagonist. Arguably, Rex being so static is why Nia, Pyra/Mythra, and the villain cast were able to develop, since their development was largely driven by his influence, but I still would very much have preferred to see something a little more dynamic.

YoukaiSlayer posted...

That's kind of the point. He was so disheartened that he didn't care how things panned out anymore and was okay with leaving his fate up to the slim chance that somebody else figured out how to save the world. It was a pretty flimsy attempt at developing his character that didn't actually change anything about him (he want from being "I like everyone so I'll save the world" to "oh no I lost now I'm sad" to "never mind I still like everyone so I'll save the world"), but there wasn't anything wrong with the story beat itself.

YoukaiSlayer posted...
the very end where they try to shoehorn in a reason to sacrifice important characters

The circumstances of that sacrifice are pretty clearly foreshadowed beforehand and pretty much just boils down to "that's how physics works." The whole thing was rendered quite silly and pointless by bringing them back three minutes later before anyone even really had a chance to respond to the sacrifice, but it certainly wasn't shoehorned in.

YoukaiSlayer posted...
I don't know why xenoblade story wants me to be punished for beating the game

It seems a little melodramatic to characterize anything less than a perfectly happy ending as "punishing you for beating the game," but you do you.

*Xenoblade 1*
That said, 1 was pretty unambiguously a happy ending. Sure, some people were lost along the way and it's not the ending you might have expected from the game's outset (that is, beating the evil robots and everyone living happily ever after with no more evil robots), but it's clearly a good outcome in pretty much every way.

*Xenoblade 2*
2's is also mostly a happy ending, especially with Pyra's sacrifice being immediately negated. There are some bittersweet elements in that all of the villains that were just defeated turned out to be sympathetic, pitiable people and it's sad that they were so far gone in their despair that reconciliation was impossible, but the world is saved, pretty much every protagonist other than Vandham is still alive, and the whole issue of titans dying is resolved by finding the new land the Architect was able to create. Again, clearly a good outcome.

*Xenoblade X*
X won't have an ending until it gets a sequel. It doesn't count.

*Xenoblade 3*
3 is the only one that's actually bittersweet, given that it entails saying goodbye to all of Aionios. Even then, as much as that's sad, the end result is overwhelmingly a positive outcome: The original worlds continue to exist and move forward instead of rotting in stasis forever, and while the future is left uncertain because that's a critical theme of the game, it's very obviously hopeful. There's every reason to expect that, based on the lingering memories of Aionios everyone will have, the worlds will end up seeking to connect and that Noah and Mio will be reunited.

I actually have KOS-MOS, but I'm missing 3 others. One wind and two dark afaik. Overall I've enjoyed the second game more than the first. Couple of things I dislike about XC2 are the informants, since they seem like an utterly useless aspect of the game and some quests being super vague as how to progress them. I hate looking up things in games unless I'm stuck and can't progress the game any further, so some of the quests are annoying, like the dubloon quest.

KOS-MOS has such an insanely bad draw rate that if you get her, you're basically done. 0.1% for every gacha group (you're randomly put in one of 5 groups when you start the game), compared to the 0.25% to 2.5% rate of other rare blades.

You can boost this up with ideas and luck, but it still remains pretty terrible. I think 999 luck max ideas is something like 0.5% chance.

The game could really have used a better pity draw system. Each drop table has 3 (iirc) rare blades that it will guarantee to you if you fail to get a rare a certain number of times, but past that the odds of pulling a rare blade should really increase across the board with every failed pull.

agesboy posted...

Max ideas is a 1.75x multiplier, 999 luck is 1.36x, and using a legendary crystal is 3x, for a grand total of .714%, or about a 51% chance to see her in 99 legendary crystals. Not catastrophic, given that farming a stack takes about half an hour, but given how tedious the opening process is, kind of a pain. Adding even just a 10% multiplier per failed pull (stacking multiplicatively, so *1.1^n) would have made it much more bearable, since that would mean a 52% chance on your 46th crystal and a guarantee on #53, while not being terribly overpowered because #20 would still only be a 4.3% chance.

Been playing pokemon emerald rogue, a romhack that turns it into a roguelite with all 8 gens. It's pretty fun and I finally won. The last 6 bosses have like 3+ legendaries and permanent helpful weather and always lead the best pokemon into your lead. Would recommend. It kind of distills the fun of a randomized nuzlocke into a much more balanced and much quicker experience.

Ill probably check it out eventually. the area I live is relatively inaka, so getting around by car provides a lot more freedom of movement. Also, trains are indeed often the faster option for traveling to other prefectures, but if Im going to a farther away place specifically for a shopping trip, such as the Costco two hours away or this alleged Walmart analogue, Im going to want my car since it will be easier to transport more items than lugging them all onto a train.

I'm fallin behind on some anime a bit. Blue lock pisses me off but I keep watching it. In this episode they were running side by side down the field having like 30 second long conversations. The field isn't that fucking big. It looked ridiculous. And the twist in this episode was so obvious and the characters are so dumb for not putting it together faster.

Additionally, I feel like world trigger has killed sports anime outside of the very best for me. It was so nice how they actually showed both teams (or all 3 or 4) plans before the show completely and then we just get to see how it works out and how they adapt to the progressing game state. Ya know, like an actual sport. Totally different from here where you know damn well every time there is a hidden twist because someone is doing too well and theres only one way the game can end. It's just so predictable.

It is, but about half the time is spent on this simulation battle between the teams working for earth and it plays out just like a sport. By lowering the stakes from "win or the world is destroyed" to "win or maybe you lose some ranking points and don't get to go n that mission you want" let's them add actual suspense.

The simulated battles play out between 3-4 teams of 2 to 4 people. It's essentially a team battle royale except they spawn randomly instead of by their teammates and you can eject if you are far away enough from anyone to deny points if you are screwed. Their "triggers" are devices that let them use the shows power system but only in ways directly programmed into it and theres no custom designs or anything (well, at least in the simulated battles) so everyone has the same toolset and it becomes about strategy, prep, skill, and a bit of luck.

It's just refreshing to see all sides of a essentially a sporting match rationally prepare and plan and then actually work according to that plan instead of the normal thing where we get a hint about what they are doing but really they have a secret strategy they are going to bring out in the second half and when the other team thought they were pulling ahead really it was right into their hidden strategy. In world trigger, sometimes the good strategy starts out doing well and just keeps doing well and they win.

It's just a shame the main character of world trigger is very useless and the show keeps pretending like he's smart but his actions don't show that (and most of the characters are actually pretty smart) so it just feels unnatural that everyone else is respecting this guys potential. In fact, it's almost exactly like Roc from black lagoon, although I guess the OVA series had Roc actually doing a little bit.

EDIT: World trigger's strategy and prep actually remind me of Ippo a fair bit. Another one of the great sports anime. Like the fact that dealing damage actually negatively impairs peoples ability to fight and some lucky damage early into a fight can radically change the entire fight. Compared to every other fighting in anime where the more damage you take, the stronger you get. Looking at demon slayer entertainment arc especially on that.

then you had entire chapters one after another that was pure dialogue only and it just murders any desire i have to read

it just fully became a tournament style battle spectator thing and it's

man it's obnoxiously bloated now

but also yes, the main guy shouldn't be the main guy, he's the weakest character in the series by far, and he has no secret hidden techniques or powerups, he is legitimately just very weak and even as a strategist he is mediocre

his personality is also crap

I'm anime only so I don't know too much about the source, but it's a weird series actually caught in the transition between weekly shonen and seasonal shonen. Season 1 is like 70 episodes with maybe the worst filler arc of all time. Like, it's bad fanfiction tier. All the characters act out of character, the HQ lets them get away with stuff that they are normally harshly opposed to with no justification, the battle system is entirely different. Like, idk how thats allowed. I watched the whole arc thinking it can't be THAT bad but it was worse. On top of that, it's got the content for like 4 episodes but it's stretched over I think 17.

If you just skip that filler arc then season 1 is a pretty solid weekly shonen style anime. The pacing is a bit slow with a fair bit of padding but it's not as bad as like early naruto or one piece in that regard. Skipping the filler it's like a 7/10 with a weak main character but really well thought out combat and power system.

Season 2 came out many years later and is a 12 episode (ish, idr the exact amount) seasonal show and it's fantastic. The pacing is actually tight, the animation is way better, and it's just a really good part of the story with one of the best battles followed up by one the best sections of rank battles (the simulated esport type thing I mentioned).

Season 3 is similar to 2 but the pacing is a bit worse and it spends too much time on the awful main character BUT the battles are quite good and the animation of one character doing... something, was amazing. The sheer spectacle of those attacks was 11/10.

As far as I know, a season 4 will eventually be made but the source isn't too far ahead so it's hard to know when they'll do it.

It's actually just kind of interesting to see a shonen make the transition from weekly to seasonal and theres really nothing like the battles in this show.

I just beat the insane challenge (a quest, beat it on hard, no items, no legendaries) and that shit took 30 years off my life. It was actually so fun though. I'd have a good run, die, complain that it was bullshit, and then theorycraft for like an hour how to beat it. Final team was so refined I had tools to spare. Weakness policy multiscale dragonite and mega charizard Y did the heavy lifting but several omastar gave their lives to set up stealth rock to disable sturdy and focus sash (the cause of most of my previous losses). Had a choice scarf gengar with destiny bond in case an enemy sweeper got too set up, and choice band alakazam I didn't even use once. What a game.

It was pretty fun coming up with strats, looking them up to make sure they could work, only to find some decade old post of someone coming up with the same strat in competitive pokemon. The dragonite set I came up with was identical to a post I found afterwards and using a water tank with eject button for clean switching after using a focus sash stealth rock setter worked like a charm. Props to enemy jolteon and aerodactyle for ending a lot of my runs as well kabutops that just always seems to have focus sash and oneshot all my charizards with stone edge.

I tried a lot of strategies and I don't think I've enjoyed a turn based RPG more than this.

Found a Vtuber that does hybrid English/Japanese streams and that kind of ASMR that I like that you can't find much of on Youtube anymore so that's a win for me today,
Then again I realized I have been subbed to her for 1-2 months now and just noticed.

Anyone here watched Assassination Classroom or The Quintessential Quintuplets? Both recently recommended to me (their manga versions at least) by students, the latter of which is particularly popular. I tend to stick to anime and rarely read manga (Junji Ito being a notable exception), but my research shows both these adaptations cut a bit from their source material. If youve seen them, would you still say theyre worth watching?

I've heard quite a bit of complaining from manganerds on quints about how the manga is a much better experience than the anime, not really heard much complaining about assclass's anime. But I haven't watched either lol. Gonna read quints eventually and watch assclass.

To be fair I've also heard this about literally every single adaptation. It's never once been good enough for people that read whatever source it's from.

I know the assclass anime is pretty well received at the very least but no idea about compared to it's manga.
