Wtf. This is actually really impressive. I dont have dogs any more so I have no incentive to walk this much. Let alone every day for a whole year. Great job!

I felt really good on squat today. All sets were improved by 5 again. They all happened to be relatively easy, so I decided to end it on a 255 which is up from 250 where I failed last time and was able to hit. Legs already sore.

Had an amazing squat today. My 1 rep went from 255 to 275 and all my other sets were also improved by 10 15 pounds each. Hit 225 x 3 pretty safely and easily. Was not expecting a 20 pound increase today.

Failed on 225 on bench today, but it felt good to at least try. Got stuck at my usual struggle point(Usually a few inches after the initial push back up). That exertion definitely made the rest of my workout hard though was struggling at the end to finish the rest of my other workouts.

Also notable-hit 185 on incline bench.

Yesterday, I did barbell bench for the first time in what feels like years. I've been doing dumbbell bench and other pressing machines in its place. I did 225 back in my hs days and haven't gone passed 185 in recent memory. But I was feeling good and the weight was moving easily. I thought what the hell let's load up 225 and found a gym bro to spot me. I told him I'm going for one and don't help unless it's killing me... I ended up doing 2.5! Feels pretty cool to finally rep (if 2 counts as repping) two plates!

Favorite feeling is hitting a weight you weren't expecting to hit and hitting it multiple times!

I'm likely going to be snowed in over the next few days so I'll be staying home because my town is great in that it has a ton of shadows so ice stays forever! Think I'll focus on just stretching.

Ive been getting back to weightlifting this month. Its been 6 years since exercise was part of my routine.

Ive been working out with a buddy out of garage. Got a squat rack, a serviceable bench, and battleropes.

Ill never get back to the numbers I was putting up before parenthood, but after a few weeks getting back into it (not trying to kill myself trying to immediately ego lift old numbers), good to know I can still deadlift 225 no problem. Debating buying another set of 45s so I can work back up to 315

no desire to get back to or exceed my PR of 385 tho

If you are deadlifting 225 no prob, its only been a few weeks, and youve put up close to four hundo before? Yeah, get you those 45s. Youll need them in like 3 weeks

This morning was a good lift mentally. I really just have to go easy these days as Ill settle for less than the physique/numbers I want if it means I can not get hurt constantly.

despite it being light weight/reps, I have really focused on lifting with intent and with power for each rep. Basically treating every rep as if it is a heavy single and even telling myself in my head that the lift is like 75lbs more than whats on the bar, sounds silly but it works. Even my warm up weight I am focusing on each rep big time. Its helped a lot and I feel strong despite some of the numbers being down

squat 220x5 225x4 230x3 235x2 240x1
deadlift 250x7 270x5 290x3 310x1 340x1 350x1
hip thrust 155x10 175x8 195x6

i Go to a small gym these days and its a pretty quiet crowd. Over the past two months I have seen two high school kids, one boy and one girl, starting coming in pretty much every morning at 5am to lift. They both were (obviously) total noobs at the beginning but have progressed in grown in many ways. Ive helped both of them a lot with some things both in the lifts then self and other stuff like having confidence in the weight room and really pushing yourself. I encouraged the boy last time to try doing weighted pull ups with the belt as he has gotten very good at BW pull-ups and it brought a tear to my eye to see him rocking it today with it

Ive finally recovered from my lower back issues. Only tweaked it 3-4 times just living my life as I was taking time off. Kinda morphed into a right glute issue near the end.

Started the year with a light week just to ease back in. Felt good even when I could tell I was stressing the pain points a bit. But I think it helped to get my body back into the routine again.

Did my normal, yearly reset and the last 2 weeks have been pretty nice. Always fun to go back to an easier weight and get that extra rep or two than youve done in the past at that weight. Shows progress in a different way than just a one rep max. On squats I think I did 14 reps that extrapolated out to around a 385 pound one rep max. In reality, I know my max is closer to maybe 320-325.

For the past month or so I've made it a point to try and workout five times a week (of course, there have been weeks where I've had to drop that down to 4, but also a week where I ambitiously went for 6), and have been increasing them in length and intensity (my average workout used to be 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes, now it's about an hour and a half to two hours), however, over the past week or two I have really noticed my progress slow to almost a halt. I think there are a few things I can do to try and fix this, and I'd like some opinions.

First, a friend recommended that I vary my routines a bit more, which I think sounds great. So far I've mostly been using the weight machines, and I think now would be a good time to try some free weight exercises. I've already started to look some up.

Second, I'm wondering if I should start, for lack of a better word, protein-ing during my workout (ie shakes) (I just take water to the gym). I've been focusing a lot on protein in my diet, but I noticed today near the end of my workout that I was unable to finish a couple of sets that I knew I was perfectly capable of doing and was very tempted to go get a Muscle Milk from the counter (if it had been more towards the middle of my workout I probably would have caved).

Third, and this is just something I have to do anyway for a million and one reasons, but I need to get a new job. My current job is physically active and although it's not a proper workout, it's exhausting and sometimes I don't have the energy to do a proper workout afterwards, or I'll to force myself to do one and it feels like a chore rather than self-betterment.

On some unrelated notes, I'm doing dry January. Not that I drink a whole lot anyway, but it's always nice to just abstain for a bit every now and then, especially right after the holidays when my drinking does increase. I've also been practicing mindfulness by daily journaling and meditation. It's been tough to keep up with so far, but I feel like in another month or two it will feel like a natural part of my routine.

Five days a week, 2 hours per session seems like a lot, especially if thats all lifting and not cardio.

I do 4 workouts a week that go about 45 minutes, and thats enough for me.

Your body needs time to rest and recuperate. Generally speaking, its best to focus on a few muscles with each session and then give those muscles at least a few days rest afterwards. Upper body tends to recover quicker than the lower body too.

I just sip water during the workout. I save the protein for afterwards.

Since going more frequently I've been getting a lot better at just doing a few muscle groups a day too.

I have had some very good lifts lately. Ive been committed to two days on/one day off which has done wonders for my recovery overall (obviously) its been about two weeks now and I really noticed the difference in the past two workouts. Pretty much all my sets yesterday on bench/Ohp day I was hitting more reps than I had programmed

ive also started incorporating an actual arm day into my programming which has been a nice change of pace that Im already seeing results from too. Current schedule is pull/push/rest, leg/arms/rest. So Im hitting everything once every six days with some carry over with deadlifting on leg day and Tricep work on the arm day, which is a little more space that Im used to but I definitely want to see how it plays out

ive also started incorporating the 50 reps of pull-ups on back day method. Its made my already lovely back get even lovelier which I did not think was possible. But basically Ill do my primary working sets with 35-55lbs on the belt for 4 sets, which will usually get me to about 20-25 reps. And then decreasing the weight a set at a time, doing amrap until I hit the 50 reps. Highly recommended

glad everyone is continuing their fitness journeys!

Where do you fail? I think I could press out a few reps with a spotter but don't think I could do that initial kick up safely and not fail right then. Only feel safe at 90 right now

Well worth it. Ill post some back gains when I get the chance. Im not sure if I explained it the best but basically my back days used to look like this when it came to pull ups

45lbs added for 3 sets of 5, or maybe 60 for 3 sets of 2-3, or maybe 25 of 3 sets of 7ish

but now its focused on getting to the total target rep of 50. Starting with decent heavy weight then going down as needed

so for example

45x5, 45x4, 45x3, 45x3 (15)
35x5, 35x3, 35x3 (26)
25x5, 25x4 (35)
10x6, 10x4 (45)
5x5 (50)

do something like that for your next four back days and tell me you dont feel and see a difference. For those who cant do weighted, this also works for just bodyweight, or bodyweight to assisted as needed. HIGHLY recommended

With a spotter I'm 100% sure I could probably get 3 to 4 reps in. I don't ever use spotters on dumbells unless I'm doing something insane. It's a lot easier to fail safely on dumbells compared to a bar because you can just bail(I've also dropped a 90 pound weight on my chest before but that's a different story). I failed after the initial push through. So like, I kick it up to bring it up then I fall backwards with the weights and it puts me in a deeper starting spot than normal, I can get past that, but it's such a strain past that because of the starting point that I can't get it past...I would say halfway through pushing or so. It feels good initially but that I just don't have the strength to muster anything beyond that. It's also my last rep/set on that so I'm already tired. I'm sure I could also at least get one or two reps if I just started on it.

Also weighted pull ups/chin ups/dips are the greatest exercise known to man and I recommend anyone to do them. Especially if you are stuck on a certain weight. It helps a lot to get past sticking points. I'm up to 4 reps with 80 pounds on weighted dips now.

the best feeling

our brains can really hold us back with some of these. We get so set in our programs and routines that we kinda get set in the thought of I can only do x weight for x reps. We dont really question it too much when we get a rep or two less as we all know we have weak days, but can often hold us back from the other side of that in the strength variance. So its not surprising that this happens so much simply just because we use the wrong plate math lol

congrats man!

our brains can really hold us back with some of these.

Today was just the unholy marriage of bad plate math and the mental aspects of lifting.

I do a series of rep limited warm up and work sets. Then my last work set is the heaviest weight but also "as many reps as I can". With that said, I generally know how many reps to expect, with +1 or 2 on a good week and -1 or 2 on a bad week.

I was feeling real good on those initial sets, so when the last set felt easy, I didn't take enough notice. But I crank out 3 more reps than I "expect" (and honestly maybe should have pushed for 1 more...). I'm thinking this is an epic day...until I look and realize I forgot to load the 15 lbs more per side for that heavy set! I literally exclaim out loud "oh you fucking dummy you forgot to put on the weights!" Funny thing, that incorrectly loaded set was my max set from 2 weeks ago and...I actually did 2 reps LESS this week!

I give myself a few extra minutes of rest and decide to still go for the real, correct heavy set. Fuck it, might as well. Despite gassing myself quite hard on that "wrong" set, I still manage to get the number of reps I expect! Maybe if I'm not an idiot I get an extra rep at the correct weight, but I was amazed that I had enough to not fall a few reps short.

I think this really goes to show the mental aspects of lifting. At the wrong, lighter weight, I got more than expected but it was less than I'd done previously at that weight. Then, at the right weight, I was able to still do what I expected, despite all the wasted energy spent just before that.

Im glad to hear that you worked through that, that can be an instantly demoralizing thing but you stuck with it and banged it out!

i had a good workout today I guess. My leg days have gotten a little different the past few months and my squat is still taking a while to get back to normal. Deadlifting has been hard to remain faithful to the program as I want to pull more weight but Im staying humble and leaving the ego at home and I know that will pay off in the long run

squats: 250x5 255x4 260x3 265x2 270x1
deadlifts 280x5 280x5 280x5
hip thrust 235x10 255x8 285x5
*leg extension machine 60x8
calf raises 55x10
rdls 95x6* supersetted these three for 3 sets

legs are looking thicc as the kids say but still have a ways to go building back a lot of that lost strength
