How do I vote??
Every day we'll be posting three head-to-head matches for a total of six songs. It's as simple as listening completely through both songs in a given match, then posting your vote for your favorite! So long as you complete the very important "listen completely through" you can even just vote in a few matches. We'll be posting the loop points on all the songs in the topic so you know exactly how long you have to listen for to hear all of them. Voting will be up for a full 24 hours from the second the day's topic is posted, and closes after 24 hours on the dot. Be careful!! If the topic is posted early by some amount for some reason, then voting will end the next top of the hour after 24 hours have passed.

Oh, is that misinterpretation what az also erroneously thought? I never referred to making a generalization out of a small sample size. I was literally laughing at the specific, small sample size.

It was just that after the list was posted the majority of early responses were negative or neutral which made me laugh because that has been my reaction every year for quite some time now, but this year I was extremely pleased!

Glad you like the set this year. It seems like the kind of selection that would appeal to older VGMC folks who don't care as much for Gust/Falcom/Umineko/Bemani stuff.

Oh. Looking back, I only see 2. One is included with a ranking that has a bunch of "great" in there, so I didn't even read the top bit. The other is ...I just didn't spot. So yeah, I didn't notice either of these.

My favorite retiree set out of the years I've been around, I think, is probably VGMC7.

Made an attempt to rank, or at least rate, all the retirees, and realized I was going to need to listen to them all repeatedly to do that. Normally there are a few I really like, and a bunch I'm indifferent or worse toward, and I can spread out the rest. But this year, basically everything falls in the "higher than merely above average" range, ranging from decent to really good. So it's just kinda a hodgepodge-y blur.

Except for Prophecy, of course. Was literally in tears over that one breaking through. A sort of cathartic release, if you will.

Going through the songs again, this crew's not actually that bad. Just wish there were a standout track for me. I like Protease better than any of these, so the final day was pretty bad. Also Danger (ARM) > Prophecy anyday. There's nothing I hate at least.

Well lookit that; seven 9s ain't bad and I didn't totally dislike anything in the bunch. Hasn't been my favorite year, but still miles ahead of VGMC 14: Exhaustion 3.

In lieu of a formal ranking, I'm just going to say that THEMEX, Breath of Forest, Mor Ardain, Sky Tower, The Lost City, and Dark Pit have all been songs I've personally called favorites for a long time, and plenty of the others are ones I really like as well. This is probably the best retiree set for me for a contest I've participated in.

I am fine with these retirees! I'd say this year ranks below 13 and 15, but above 14. I'm especially happy for Move Me / Endless Desert / Passing Through the Forest, and Different World 1 / Sky Tower / Breath of Forest feel like deserving retirees, even though I rank them below songs like The Lost City.

I do feel I'm missing that sense of excitement from previous years, mostly because I couldn't be as active this year but also because I was already familiar with many of the songs. Passing Through the Forest and Different World 1 have that special combination of discovery plus personal enjoyment, but previous years would have more songs that felt like discoveries or re-discoveries. Move Me being my first support to retire really makes up for everything though - go my Unknown D&B!!

(These are new ratings, not my official ones) Honestly it's a pretty good set of retirees! I know it might look like a disappoinitng year given only two 9+'s, but my standard for a 9 is quite high. A 9.0 a couple years ago was probably like an 8.5 is now.

Oh wow, I never noticed the delay echoes at around 2:40 in Tachi, probably because I often don't listen as closely as I should to music.... that is really, really coool! (obv. dl's are used in other places, too, but that part sticks out to me) Dark Pit has grown on me, too...I like those transposing guitar three-note patterns. But that moment of silence feels so out of place! I prefer moments of silence in stuff like Cave of the Deep, https://youtu.be/3hGm54mLZcI?t=15. (granted, technically it's not really silence because of the reverb)

For a while now (as in before this contest) I thought it would be cool to run a vgm contest with only forest themes. There are so dang many good ones out there. I'm so damn glad that Secret and Passing managed to retire.

Was just going through some old playlists and stuff, thinking about how I've been kinda negative towards some songs and stuff lately despite it not being my overall opinion, and decided on the spot I wanted to do something fun for the winding down days of this tournament!

It's perhaps a bit unorthodox, but I'm gonna be counting down my top 10 songs I got introduced to this contest that *didnt* make it in this time around that still haven't seen the light of day yet, whether I supported them or should've, in hopes they might get a second chance down the road!

A few notes:

-Tiebreakers were factored in by adding up all votes cast for a song across all days. For instance, Passing through the Forest/Different World 1 was counted as a 55-58 win for Passing.
-Secret of the Forest and Southern Twilight are indeed tied, as they both lost 31-32 to Passing. human's figure ended up about 0.004% ahead of Yggdrasil.
-Battle of Blizzard Bridge is the highest-ranked song to have lost in round 1, while Mechonis Field is the highest that lost in round 2 (curiously, above everything that lost in round 3). Just imagine if Kaze No Ne had gone the distance!
-Because there were very few blowouts, and even fewer in later rounds, most songs end up looking pretty good, with only the bottom 10 being projected to get below 30% on Passing through the Forest.
-As a point of comparison, in Isoleucine's bracket in VGMC14, the second-highest song only got 38.63% on it - that number would be 31st here. (Incidentally, that second-highest song? Move Me. Foreshadowing at its finest!)
-Pour one out for our ultimate loser, Block Ball Stage 5 - not only is it behind the biggest chain of losses, but a lot of those losses were pretty decisive. And pour another for eda edovi, which despite losing directly to the winner ended up at the bottom.

Those are some tight x-stats. Total lack of dominating blow-outs. I wonder if this will be the norm for VGMC in the future.

Just noticed that the 20th century did way better this contest with 5 retirees and 2 semifinalists. I remember that being a point of contention last year.

This one's just really cool. It's rather hard to explain esp compared to most music I like, but it's unique, got a pretty vibe, and the chants and voices really add to it. Sorta like a more "natural"-feeling Dariusburst, I suppose.

Thoughts:

-With two finalists that took, uh, very different paths to get there, these were pretty much guaranteed to look weird unless Breath of Forest won comfortably, which it did not. All of Argon's opponents end up looking good, taking up spots 2-6(!!) and with only *sigh* Unknown Pollution failing to crack the top 10.
-You know what is in the top 10? Terra. Yes, that Terra.
-On the other hand, Sky Tower is the only non-BoF song on the right side to crack 40%. If Breath of Forest had won, The Rain Formerly Known as Purple would have done so as well, but that's it.
-CHAMPION RITUAL did not end up determining the champion, so for that it gets last place.
