Doesn't get more varied than this! Apologies in advance for the Do the Universe clip--Viacom's got that one under lock and key, and I'm not fixing to pare a fight with Viacom.

Some hot air about Do the Universe (spoilers, probably? Eh)
I'm almost willing to bet that anyone voting Beavis here hasn't seen either nominee, or is simply acting on their appreciation for the (excellent) 1996 one. The name Do the Universe seems to imply this huge scale, which is amusing since the adventure feels much smaller, less cohesive than in Do America. New characters are um not great, most notably the lead girl; she gets up to some heinous shit and her resolution doesn't feel earned at all. The various college scenes got a laugh, though they're about all I can stand to remember. All this said, here's my takeaway: Do America is a theatrical movie, and Do the Universe is a TV special.

Speaking of TV specials and also Viacom, I wondered why the premise of this movie was so familiar, and it hit me. The Rocko's Modern Life special, Static Cling, is also about taking established characters from the 90s and teleporting them to the present, so they can be confused by smartphones and boba tea and whatever else the kids are into. Probably won't be the last time, either. Hey, remember Cornholio?!

Wanted to give some quick thoughts about the first matchup. Don't be misled by Sing's 3/10 score; I do think it's at least cute and really picks up in the third act. Getting there is the hard part, (Buster Moon and the lizard lady are kind of unwatchable, which ripples out and harms the movie as a whole) but eventually you do get what you paid for. The concert is probably what sticks with people anyways, since it is the cinematic high and serves to tie up all the loose ends.

Hercules is a weird one since it probably has the weakest writing out of any Renaissance movie. Its appeal comes more from the inspired art direction and the performances of the cast, with James Woods as Hades stealing the show every second he gets. It's definitely a fun watch, and I do like it, but consider Disney's output in the 90s and there's much better stuff you could be watching.
