In other words, what's the minimum amount of player interaction required for a game to be a game?

Similar to the "are VNs games" debate, I suppose.

Depends if you think you are able to influence the dice at all. If you can't and they are random, then the moment you decide to start the game, the ending has also been decided. You just act out the motions and watch the results.

It's the same as a VN or movie in that regard.

"game: a form of play or sport, especially a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck."

Chutes and Ladders is a game. Visual novels are not.

Chutes and Ladders is a game because there's at least a strong illusion of the player doing something to affect the outcome. Candy Land, otoh, is just draw a card, do what it says.

It's a great first game for children under the age of 5 to learn basic board game principles such as how to take turns, how to move on a board and how to follow rules. For anyone over the age of 5, it's a terrible experience. -

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5432/chutes-and-ladders/forums/63

I wouldn't compare Chutes and Ladders to being the Board Game equivalent of a Visual Novel though. There are plenty of popular board games out there that are all story and theme with very little actual gameplay - like Nemesis or Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective - that could be accurately compared to Visual Novels in Board Game form.

There are lots of games that are automated enough once you get them set up that you can play them while asleep. I wouldn't even say VNs are really one of those because you at least need to be awake to advance the text and make choices.

I'm not sure if it's a game but it's certainly a form of play and can be educational for very young children. I think that's the significant thing about it.

I've thought about this with the card game War. It's all luck. You don't even choose between unknown possibilities. If you want to determine something by who wins, you might as well flip a coin. The mechanics of the rules are just so you can stretch out the time used up.

Yeah, but there are other games of chance that involve choices or even strategy. I guess it's a game by definition, but it seemed kind of pointless to me if it could be resolved without any player interaction.

If just following dice or card draws without doing anything denies it being a game, then here's a question:

What about a board game that does have a lot more rules and player decision, but there is one singular path of decisions you can make to win? Is that still a game? Or does it become a puzzle?

I'm thinking about games like Ghost Stories, Pandemic. Illusion of choice, at least if you are trying to win.

I suppose the argument there would be that you have to at least navigate and explore in those adventure games. Finding a single key feels a little more gamey to me than having three keys sitting in front of you and only one of them ever working, then rinse and repeat.

While there is very little skill, luck still plays a big part. The game isn't deterministic in the sense that if we played the game, went back in time and played the same game we would get different roll orders.

As an aside, as a kid I learned to have precise muscle movement for dice/coins to get what I wanted. For example, I was able to flip a coin (with it turning multiple times in the air) and get what I wanted >80% of the time. I remember my math teacher calling BS on me for flipping a coin 100 times and getting 85 heads, had to flip a coin in front of them 10 times to show that I can somewhat control it.

Yeah my mom removed the Plummy card that sent the person who drew it back to like 10% of the way through the board.

I'd say that strictly deterministic games like War or pure luck games like Chutes and Ladders etc are still games, though they're more "amusements" you participate in to kill time rather than anything especially engaging or IMO interesting. Something like Ludo with extremely limited player input is one step above that, but I'd say puzzle games like Ghost Trick are absolutely full fledged games - I think of them as a game you're playing against the creator.
