Unrestricted Free Agents (AKA Signing Your Remaining Free Agents)

Any player of yours whose contract expired and was not part of the previous event will be included here. This is an extremely straightforward event. You either sign or you do not sign players, Those you do stay on your team, those you don't enter the free agent pool.

When you receive the PM with your slash lines, remember that those are not the deals you have to sign them to. With a few exceptions that I will lay out, you can sign anyone (pending the age/max length rule) to deals 1-7 years in length. If you wish to give a player a custom offer, I might be available to do live signings on Discord or the spreadsheet. Otherwise, we can bounce PMs off of each other for a while (remember that there is a deadline though and delay in response could be a day or longer). If you wish to offer someone a deal of a different length but do not want to bother with the financials, you can merely say you want to give X player the default deal for Y years.

There are only two wrinkles for this event. One is that a few players might hold out for better deals. I can confirm that one user has a pair of holdouts. What happens is that I will isolate them in the PM and tell you their base deal. If you elect not to sign them, they will stay on your team without playing a down for you until you trade them, release them, or give into their contract demands. Keep in mind that any guaranteed money still left on their contract (annual bonus) is transferred over to the new contract.

The second wrinkle is that some players hate your team to where they will only sign via the franchise tag, which is a one year deal that pays them the average of the Top 5 salaries at their position or 120% of what they made last season, whichever is higher. I will isolate those players and also tell you how much money that comes out to as of this moment. The franchise tag has rarely been used, so while I am not expecting anyone will use it, you never know.

For those who don't remember, the age/max length rule is that you can't sign a player to a longer contract if it will take them past their age-34 season. You can however sign a player through their age-34 season if it was already included in their default contract. For example, if a 33-year-old player asks for a 3 year contract, you can sign him to that deal because it was part of the default deal. You cannot sign them to a 4+ year contract though.

Also remember that sign-and-trades are not allowed. Players signed to 1 year contracts are ineligible to be traded (RFAs signed via tenders are exempt from this rule). Players signed to multi-year contracts are ineligible to be traded until Week 9 of the regular season.

Signing Your UFAs Rules

1. I will PM everyone their UFAs and the slash line (length/total/signing bonus) of their desired deal. I will also include and isolate any players who are either holding out or hate your team to where they will only sign with you if you place the franchise tag on them.

2. You will PM me back with the following format (using two players from my team as an example)

Re-signing:
P Kyle Basler - 3 / $4.97 mil / $780k
or
P Kyle Basler - 2 year default

Franchise Tag:
Nobody

Not re-signing:
LG Jeremiah Poutasi

The deadline for signing your UFAs will be Thursday, August 25th at 7 PM ET

Trade time!

Eagles receive:
Orcas S18 1st round pick
Orcas S18 4th round pick
QB DeShone Kizer (80 overall, 24 years old)
LG Alex Cappa (80 overall, 22 years old)
LE Will Clarke (76 overall, 26 years old)

Orcas receive:
WR Ted Ginn (89 overall, 35 years old)
Eagles S17 1st round pick (15th overall)
Eagles S18 7th round pick

Broncos receive:
WR Demaryius Thomas (86 overall, 31 years old)
LG Andy Christensen (87 overall, 36 years old)

Eagles will incur a $3.65 mil cap penalty to turn $21.44 mil in cap hits into $4.14 mil cap hits

Orcas will incur a $1.45 mil cap penalty to turn an $8.57 mil cap hit into a $10.0 mil cap hit

Broncos will incur a $1.02 mil cap penalty to turn $4.65 mil cap hits into $14.9 mil cap hits

This is really two trades where the Orcas and Eagles swap picks and WRs and then the WR originally going to the Eagles along with a G are then sent to the Broncos.

The Eagles and their planned UFA signings, which were already having the cap in mind, would have put them well into negative cap territory with them still having to deal with six draft picks. They needed to cut down on some costs, and one way was to send out some high-priced veterans.

Ginn, a surefire hall of famer, has been a shell of his former self since QB Chris Leak left. He has seen the end zone 9 times, but he has just 1107 yards the past two seasons while remaining in the #1 role. He and QB Taysom Hill just weren't anywhere near the match that he and Leak were. Christensen was a solid G for the Eagles with a nearly 5:1 block:sack ratio in his three seasons there, but he missed six games last season and simply wasn't worth his price tag of over $9 mil.

The Eagles get a ton of cap relief and a future 1st and Day 2 pick, but they also get some very good young players back. Kizer had back-to-back 80+ passer ratings his first two seasons in the league and was a QB of the Year finalist after S15. He will be a huge improvement over soon-to-be-released backup QB Kyle Lauletta playing behind a QB in his contract year with an injury history. Cappa is arguably the prize coming back to Philly. He was one of the bright spots for an uncharacteristically lackluster Broncos team as he had 15 blocks against 3 sacks as a part-time starter as a rookie. He could be Christensen's immediate replacement. Clarke has been quite productive as a rotational DE for the Broncos. Despite no starts, he has 6 sacks in three seasons there.

The Orcas are swinging for the fences here forgoing the 4-5 years of Demaryius Thomas, who has yet to miss a game in his career, for one season of injury-prone Ginn. Thomas has outproduced Ginn the past two seasons in everything but TD total, but Ginn has a higher ceiling, and that ceiling is what they are looking for in a #2 WR as they hope that one of Jameis Winston/Marcus Mariotta emerges this season as the permanent starter. They also land a mid-first as they hope to add more blue-chip talent to their team in the hopes of being a Super Bowl contender.

The Broncos had a rare losing season last year, and the main culprit was an injured and anemic offense. While they gave up some key backups and a potential long-term starter, G Andy Christensen should be a worthy rental for a Broncos team trying to figure out if HB Kenyan Drake is the future. The bigger get is WR Demaryius Thomas who instantly becomes their best WR since Keary Colbert from long ago. The Broncos now have a very solid group of pass-catchers.

All teams understood the parameters, financial impact, history of players, and what all teams hoped to accomplish with this trade. It is now official.

Trade!

Bears receive:
WR Chester Rogers (83 overall, 25 years old)
RG Tavian Millard (80 overall, 25 years old)
LE Raymont Jones (78 overall, 23 years old)

Wildcats receive:
LG Gabe Jackson (97 overall, 28 years old)
WR Jordy Nelson (86 overall, 32 years old)

Bears will incur a $3.73 mil cap penalty to turn $22 mil in cap hits into $9.15 mil in cap hits

Wildcats will incur a $2.36 mil cap penalty to turn $11.51 mil in cap hits into $18.27 mil in cap hits

The Bears were hoping to retain both LT Alex Boone and Jackson but elected not to furiously have to juggle the cap and move on from Jackson who performed at an above-average level for the Bears and not worth his cap hit. Nelson was also productive for the Bears but with a cap hit approaching $9 mil and not guaranteed to be the #1 WR, he was also one of the better trade candidates. In return, they get three young players with Rogers being the most notable one. The former Day 2 pick has excelled in his two seasons with the Wildcats averaging over 15 yards per reception and nearly 1000 yards total as a slot and #2 receiver. Millard was the 50th overall pick in the last draft and did well as a rookie with 16 blocks and 3 sacks allowed in 9 games and 5 starts. Jones hasn't really produced as a backup DE, but he provides more talent along the DL.

The Wildcats have long struggled with OL performance, which has had a profound impact on their running game. Jackson offers the most talent they have had on the OL in quite some time, and they desperately hope that he can help third-year HB Dalvin Cook salvage his career with just a 3.3 YPC thus far and somehow starting 16 games last season and producing just 812 rushing yards. Losing Rogers, who looked every bit like a future #1, is a big cost, but they do get back a productive Nelson who will be on the same timeline as incumbent Gonzie Massey.

Bears were aware of the trade parameters, financial impact, histories of players involved, and what all parties hoped to achieve. This trade is official.

Another three-way trade!

Express receive:
LG Clay Schneidmiller (86, 26)
SS Orlando Montgomery (85, 26)
C Scott Quessenberry (80, 26)
DT Dana Dorsey (79, 24)
LT Spencer Jordan (78, 27)
LT Denzelle Good (77, 26)
WR Tajae Sharpe (76, 24)
Orcas 2nd round pick (61st overall)
Orcas S18 2nd round pick

Orcas receive:
LT Derrick Taylor (77, 25)
Express 1st round pick (31st overall)
Express 5th round pick (159th overall)
Express S18 7th round pick

Pioneers receive:
SS Keanu Neal (96, 26)
RG Wyatt Teller (82, 24)

Express will incur a $2.11 mil cap penalty to turn $7.48 mil in cap hits into $13.07 mil in cap hits

Orcas will incur a $400k cap penalty to turn $6.28 mil in cap hits into a $2.79 mil cap hit

Pioneers will incur a $930k cap penalty to turn $11.9 mil in cap hits into $6.73 mil in cap hits

This is effectively two trades. One has the Orcas send two 2nds, a young emerging G, a rotational DT, and a young OT (with a base salary over $1 mil less than the one they are trading for) for the 31st pick, a young OT, and two Day 3 picks. The Express then send through two transactions the G they just received and SS Neal for a haul of young players from the Pioneers.

The Express had a bunch of starters hit free agency just as new management rolled into town. Their UFA plans kept getting a bit derailed due to cap space/roster hole issues. While it hurts to lose a star like Neal, who was holding out, moving him was ultimately the best way to keep a healthy cap situation to sign the players they wanted to keep and their upcoming rookie class and get a bunch of young players back to fill holes and play pivotal bench or even starting roles. To help facilitate this, they also send out the 31st pick while acquiring two 2nds and several players, the headliner of whom was then flipped.

The Orcas, while mostly existing in this to help, do use what few trade assets with value they had left to move back late into the 1st for a potential high-reward player down the line.

The Pioneers get a star in Neal, a SS who has recorded at least one sack, INT, FF, and FR in each season of his career. They already had a great young tandem at the position, but Neal was still a clear upgrade on their incumbents, and they had a ton of young players to spare that the Express wanted and needed. They also acquire Teller who could compete for the outgoing Schneidmiller's old spot.

All parties understood the trade parameters, financial impact, histories of players involved, and what each team hoped to achieve. This trade is now official.

Trade

Express Receive:
CB William Jackson III (81 overall, 25 years old)
QB Charlie Schroeder (80, 26)
Steelers 3rd round pick (97th overall)

Steelers Receive:
CB Dre Kirkpatrick (85, 28)

The Express will incur a $970k cap penalty to turn a $4.92 mil cap hit into $3.85 mil cap hits

The Steelers will turn $3.85 mil in cap hits into a $3.95 mil cap hit

The Express further bolster their depth and improve their financial situation with modest drop offs in starter ratings as they work toward a deeper roster for a return SB trip while also getting a Top 100 pick.

After missing out on Daryl Worley, the Steelers went further down the Express depth chart to improve their CB group by sending out their previous #1 CB, their backup QB, and a Top 100 pick.

Both parties understood the trade parameters, financial impact, the histories of all players, and what each team hoped to achieve. This trade is official.

Live NFL Draft

This is a 7-round affair where teams select college players. There are 32 picks in each round for a total of 224 selections overall. We break this down into three real-life days. Rounds 1 and 2 are on the first day, rounds 3 and 4 are on the second day, and rounds 5 through 7 are the final day. The draft takes place in the spreadsheet as that is where all the info is, and I totally failed in my lone attempt to do a draft in both the spreadsheet and Discord.

In one of the posts below, I will include the draft order again as well as updated draft pick ownerships. I only include ownership of other teams' picks. If you wish to attend the draft at all, I require that you own a Google account and either PM/DM me or post here the email associated with it so that I can include you as having permission in the spreadsheet and you can sign in and enter the chat function which is located near the top right of the spreadsheet. Most of you have done so in previous years, but there could be a few people wanting to attend this year but have yet to receive permission. You must be on a desktop/laptop to access the chat function.

NFL Draft Rules

1. When it is your time to pick, type your selection in the spreadsheet

2. There is a 5 minute pick limit, which starts when I say something along the lines of "X team is on the clock"

3. If no pick has been made after 5 minutes, I will select the player for you

4. If a user is not present at the time they are on the clock, they will be auto-drafted via rule #3 until they notify me of their return

If I can't or don't want to be here for the draft, what are my options?

Queue - You give me a list of players in order of priority. It can be as few as one and as many as the 250+ prospects that will eventually be in that sheet.

Draft Strategy - You give me a vague or specific set of instructions on how to draft your players. An example of this would be:
Draft best available CB in 1st round
Draft best available player in 2nd-4th rounds
Draft best available player for a position of need in 5th-7th rounds.

Conditionals - You give me a list of conditionals. Unlike the other two examples, this one is best used if you only think that you will be unavailable for a single round. Using WR Michael Thomas as an example:
1. Draft CB Jaire Alexander
2. Draft the best available OT with a 1st round grade
3. Draft the best available player for a position of need

Even if you plan to attend the draft on any or all days, it would really help me out if you send me something from the above list.

I cannot stress enough just how important this is to me. Even if you plan to attend the draft on some or all days, there is only one person guaranteed to be present for the draft, and that's me because otherwise there is no draft. So the draft runs as smoothly as it possibly, I create a spreadsheet where I craft detailed draft plans for all user teams in case I have to draft for them. If I am given a strategy/queue/conditional (especially one that encompasses the entire draft) from a team, then I do not have to waste my time and effort for said team. Please do this as having to come up with draft plans for 20+ user teams would possibly take me 10+ hours to do.

Trade

Cowboys receive:
FS Eddie Jackson (81 overall, 24 years old)
DT Oge Burton (76, 25)

Steelers receive:
DT Andrew Vance (78, 26)
QB Pat Casey (72, 30)

Oops I did the trade before getting down the cap penalties, but...

Cowboys will incur a $400k-ish cap penalty to turn $2.62-ish mil in cap hits into $6.66 mil in cap hits

Steelers will incur a $1.13 mil cap penalty to turn $7.79 mil in cap hits into $2.42 mil in cap hits

The Cowboys lose their solid rotational DT who was probably always going to be blocked in Dallas plus nearly triple the cap hits for a chance at a long-term starting FS as Jackson will presumably battle with incumbent Shelton Kelly for the job.

The Steelers were looking to get rid of Jackson's $5+ mil cap hit and were able to improve their DT depth and get closer to positive cap territory in the process.

"Both" parties understood the trade paramters, financial impact, histories of past players, and what each team hoped to achieve. This trade is now official.

Trade

Browns receive:
QB Josh Portis (87 overall, 34 years old)
HB Devontae Booker (81. 27)
RT Barry Richardson (78, 35)

Vikings receive:
QB Dak Prescott (84, 26)
LT Adrian Parker (81, 24)

Browns will incur a $1.39 mil cap penalty to turn $10.25 mil in cap hits into $7.89 mil in cap hits

The Vikings will incur a $2.58 mil cap penalty to turn $9.97 mil in cap hits into $8.86 mil in cap hits

Dak was a former 6th overall pick who ultimately never really put it together for the Browns and was no longer part of their future plans. With WR Allen Hurns a free agent and TE Austin Hooper more of a blocker, a scrambling QB like Portis is a much better fit for the Browns offense with WR DeAndre Hopkins as the solo plus receiving asset. While Portis' passing game has slipped a bit over the years, his running has not, and he could help boost and/or revitalize an OL that is among the weakest in the league. Booker and his career 4.2 YPC on nearly 150 carries is a great backup option, and Richardson was tossed in there as a cheap OT option after sending one out. They also save over $2 mil while plugging a hole that is generally on the more expensive side.

Portis, a two-time MVP, has had a great career with the Vikings, but he is no longer the best fit for the club. They need a QB to help out their first round pick from a season ago in WR Robby Anderson, and they already have four 20-something OL rated 95+. While it is just as likely that Dak is one and done in Minnesota, his skill set is one that the Vikings could use. They also receive LT Adrian Parker as an intriguing, young depth piece who could potentially succeed Junius Coston at RT, though Parker's 36 blocks: 6 sacks allowed in 32 games and 1 start doesn't exactly scream that.

Browns demonstrated that they understood the trade parameters, financial impact, histories of all players involved, and what both parties hoped to achieve. This trade is official.
