Top Gun Maverick has made more than Dr. Strange 2 globally and Maverick is still showing in theaters while Strange is only showing in very select theaters, so TGM is going to make way more when it's all said and done. I never watched the original Top Gun and I'm sure there's a cultural thing here I'm missing, but to think a Marvel movie couldn't beat Tom Cruise is kind of sad. I do like Tom Cruise movies and there's a good chance I'll go see TGM, but it's upsetting Dr. Strange 2 didn't do so well for Marvel standards

I do like the refreshing take Raimi gave to the MCU and even though I don't like horror, I actually enjoyed the horror bits and found them humorous at times; however, my concern is Disney/Marvel will look at the box office numbers and think the movie underperformed because of Raimi, so he will not be given another opportunity to direct a Marvel movie, but more importantly, they will be afraid of straying from the formula because they think only when they play it safe will their movies be "well-received" and the box office numbers will meet whatever lofty goals they set

Dr. Strange 2's global box office compared with No Way Home's global box office is like comparing an ant to an elephant. Opinions will differ, of course, but I wouldn't say NWH was a way better movie than Strange 2. I actually enjoyed the latter more because I love Strange and Wanda. I still enjoyed NWH and it was nice to see the Spiderman trio team up, but I am quite puzzled by what made the movie so successful

I think after the Infinity Saga ended, a decent chunk of the MCU fanbase is now only interested in characters and films that interest them instead of following the entire Phase 4

Anyway Top Gun Maverick is a super mediocre movie but it's a prestige film for dads that appeals to boring masculine ideals so everyone slobbers all over it, shrug, I can't say I'm surprised people went apeshit for it

Yeah Spider-Man is one of the three most well known/popular heroes on the planet. (the other two being Batman and Superman.) He's far more popular than any other MCU hero.

Also Para is basically right, Top Gun appeals to a different audience that hasn't had a major blockbuster like this in awhile. If there were a movie like that every three months (like in the 80s and 90s) people would get sick of them too.

Uh, Dr. Strange 2 is incredibly successful. Talking it down it here is a pretty odd interpretation of Maverick's success! It made more at the domestic box office than all the non-Avengers MCU movies other than No Way Home, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. I think it's pretty insane that it made more money than the first two Spider-man movies and all three Iron Man movies!

Yeah Top Gun: Maverick is one of the all-time highest-grossing movies. Plus Doctor Strange is the highest-grossing Phase 4 film not involving Spider-Man anyway.

TBH I like both movies but I didn't think Top Gun was a whole lot better. It's definitely more of a crowd-pleaser though.

Well Top Gun will outgross every Marvel film except for the Avengers films and No Way Home, so that definitely says more about Top Gun than the MCU. I will say though, you have to account for the lack of Russia and China when looking at say Doctor Stranges total compared to prior MCU films - the only reason its not one of their top grossers is that.

Also Para, I dont care for hyper-masculinity, dislike the military, and have no affiliation for the original Top Gun or similar films. And Top Gun Maverick is a fantastic film. I strongly disagree with you. I think its just an excellently crafted rollercoaster and human story with a very thin military coat of paint.

They absolutely fucking love Tom Cruise in China and advertise every movie with his name in giant letters and the title below it. I don't know why China loves him so much. I'm actually very glad they didn't censor the movie for China.

Should be up to the people to decide what's acceptable for them, but Chinese government still being so oppressive on sexuality

Interestingly enough, my local theater is still showing Everything Everywhere All At Once, but not Strange 2. Guess they're doing me a favor since I still haven't seen it

There have been theaters in red states that put up signs saying they would fast-forward through the same-sex kiss in Lightyear, but it's such a short scene that they've basically fast-forwarded through larger, important parts of the movie, causing people to complain.

Theaters probably aren't physically able to alter a film file they receive, even if they wanted to. I don't know the logistics of how it works exactly for each theater, but the projectors are just playing the film back like a DVD player plays a DVD. They don't have editing function.

Seriously. Since when is $950 million (without China, btw) in any way, shape, or form a failure? That makes it the 58th highest worldwide box office of all time and 8th out of all Marvel movies domestically. By all metrics it is a success.

Foreign audiences tend to be less attuned to the controversies attached to Hollywood stars. Tom Cruise is very popular in South Korea if The Mummy's box office is anything to go by.

We'll see what happens with Aquaman 2. The negative press covfefe regarding Amber Turd was worldwide, though I'm not quite sure about China. I expect the movie to do well there anyway even if it flops stateside because of that harpy, but this may be a rare exception.

The thing with superhero movies is that they've been so overdone for the last decade that it's easier to just not care. Top Gun was the first for its audience since No Time to Die last autumn, and even that tried to expand its audience to younger generations instead of solely catering to its existing demographic. There just aren't very many classic action movies anymore. I'm hoping that Top Gun succeeding gets us a Die Hard finale but we'll see. I actually still need to see Top Gun. Maybe I'll just go do that in the next few days... I should watch the original first since I haven't seen that in 15 years.

it bears mentioning that this movie plays perfectly into cultural trends toward pro-militarism and traditional "masculine values" so the timing is pretty good.

at the same time marvel seems to have stagnated into what has become an extremely safe/tepid brand of neoliberalism (i.e. disneyfication)

in other words, two separate examples of why american culture is so shitty right now
