Prove me wrong.
Only one nation has used a nuclear weapon against another nation... twice.
Only one nation has more firearms than people.

Goddammit @antifar, this is why I like you. I'm probably the last of the far-righties left on CE, mostly because Rand and Sowell and Reagan, and I'm slipping.

I don't disagree.
Operation Downfall was going to be a disaster, and we finally ran out out of the purple hearts minted for it in Afghanistan

No, it didn't. Russia (or rather, the Soviet Union) breaking neutrality did that.

Weren't more people cooked to death in the firebombings than both nukes combined?

Why do people never mention that and just focus on the nukes?

There is a mild difference when years-long bombing campaigns and dropping literally two bombs have comparable body counts.

The one night firebombing of Tokyo killed around 100k alone. It didnt take an entire year to rack up the count

You're the one being purposely dense, as always. You completely missed the point of the question and try to downplay what happened.

Were I to make a guess, the nation that would fear the US the most would be Zimbabwe.
Russia and China are making active stabs at America's sole hyperpower status. Canada is a best buddy, almost all of Europe are friends, and the entire western hemisphere is dominated (including Cuba, Venezuela, and also Denmark)

Zimbabwe is the only part of the old British empire that has not been cleaned up.

The bombs were necessary. The alternative was invasion which would have been far worse. We still have a surplus of purple hearts because so many were made in anticipation of the casualties.

A meeting was held the day of the Nagasaki bombing and adjourned without reaching a consensus on surrender. The Emperor didn't make his final decision until several days later.

I still don't understand why cities were nuked and not, say, an empty island off the coast of Japan. That way would have demonstrated the power of the nukes without the human death toll

The nuclear weapons were used because 1) congress needed to justify the billions in unaccounted for research budget, and
2) Truman wanted Japan to surrender to the US to gain it as a strategic location, rather than Japan falling in the hands of the Soviet Union, a rising power with opposed ideology.

It had nothing to do with saving lives lol

It's kind of interesting how much the US is considered the bad guys in modern for stomping Japan shit in by the end. When they were objectively the bad guys with a goal and ideology very similar to the Nazis.

Nor are they ever called out for refusing to surrender, years prior, continuing a hopeless war, and sending near a entire generations of youths their deaths to protect their cowardly high command.

Would Japan have done well in the Soviet Union?
Casual reminder that the Soviets absolutely hated the Japanese because of the war they lost in the 1800s.

Truman didn't kill 20 million people in 10 years for the sole reason of those people being not American enough.
