Switch - March 3, 2017, Launch date (only system I ever pre-ordered)
PS5 - Late December 2020, right after Christmas (about 6 weeks after launch)
3DS - September 2011, right after the first price drop (about 6 months after launch)

Pretty sure that's it. Pretty sure everything else I've owned I got at least a year after launch. GBA was very close. Just a couple weeks after the 1-year mark in North America.

I think I generally tend not to. I know I got a 3DS around that same time, though.

Not a lot. I tend to wait until the system stabilizes first and if possible get a later hardware revision. Only the following, I think:

GBA - since I was going to college and didnt bring a TV or console
Wii - barely less than a year in I think. Got lucky finding one right before sales picked up again.
Switch - I dont remember this as well but I think Ive had it awhile.

I'm not sure on the SNES and that's because I've had it ever since I was a toddler, so I have no memory of when I got it.

GBA I'm also not sure on because I think when I got it, it was rather close around the 1-year mark of its launch.

N64 only. Haven't even bought a system since the 360.

I'm fairly confident on GBC, GBA, DS, and Gamecube. Maybe 3DS, Wii U, and Switch but that's probably it.

I don't think I've ever had a console within the year it launched.

Only the PS3 right around its launch over here and it convinced me never to buy any console ever again in its "first year" since I only played two games (one of which was Sonic '06) and it took a year later until I played my third PS3 game.

• Game Boy I dunno, probably not until Link's Awakening at earliest... we had a Super Game Boy and I can only imagine the Game Boy itself we got first
• N64 was my brother's 11th birthday... *looks up* within the first year
• Game Boy Color I don't have a precise frame of reference but I feel it was within the year
• GBA... I can't point to a frame of reference. I emulated Ruby and Battle Networks 1&2... I got a Platinum model so I'm erring on after first-year. I did also get an SP though... it's probably close to first year for both, hrm
• GameCube brothers birthday frame of reference again, and I believe once more it was the birthday following launch
• DS i got the Mario Kart DS bundle, just barely after the first year, holiday 2005. I skipped DS Lite but that then convinced me to snag DSi soon as it came
• Wii, and every Nintendo afterwards: launch day. Wii was the first system I bought myself and I kept it up since... Wii being the only one I had to physically wait in line for. 3DS I preordered at EB Games, Wii U ordered online BestBuy, Switch online Yodobashi Camera.
• PS2 sent by Zea wayyy later than my Wii
• PS3 when my brother's ex broke the PS2, which as mentioned, was years after Wii
• 360 brother got around Vesperia time
• *edit* oh right Vita I caved in peer pressure rationalized with "well I never had a PSP", got at launch

Probably none of them, I usually get consoles a couple of years after launch where a better model has been released and is a bit cheaper. For instance I remember first having a DS Lite and a Xbox 360 Elite.

Weird that the PS4 was the only non-Nintendo one. I actually ended up picking up more launch era games for my 360 and Vita than I owned for the PS4, but I didn't get those within the first 12 months. I also got a 3080 so I could play games with next-gen visuals on PC within the first 12 months if that counts.

Xbox - My Dad got it for me when i was kid. I live in the UK and it got released a few months after it did in NA. I didn't get it within a year of its NA release but did get it within a year of its UK release.
DS - The closest i've ever got a system from launch. Dad also got me that.

Oh checking the dates i actually got a switch very late 2017, so that too.

Got a PS2 for Christmas the year it came out. Bought 2 handheld systems myself within a year though and that was the Mario Kart DS bundle and a PSP with GTA:LCS. Never really saw the point in buying brand new systems as there's never really anything to buy for them within the first year and a half at least.

Got a Wii for Christmas the first year. Gamecube too I think.

Switch I got about 14 months after release, so just missed it. Would have bought a PS5 if I could find one

After the DS Lite came out, I learned to wait for better models. Then when my $500 Fat PS3 died, I learned to wait for better models AND price drops.

Wii I got about 9 months after, for Metroid Prime 3

Switch I got on a sale about 7 months after release, which was a good move since it hasn't gotten any cheaper 5 years later...

PS5 I got in April last year. Again, feels like a good move since I don't see it getting cheaper anytime soon (plus I was able to sell my PS4 for a good price).

Possibly the N64 and PS1, but I'm not sure. That's it. I buy my systems 3-4 years late and pick up all the old games at 1/3-2/3 the price they were originally.

As for other ones. I didn't get a ps1 until the remodel. I remember I got a ps2 when unlimited saga was a new game. I might have actually has a Saturn within a year because nights into dreams was new when I had one.

I had a Gameboy color for pokemon gsc. But I know I didn't have any other ones close to release. I got a dreamcast in 2001.

3DSxl if that specific model counts, but that came out well after the original 3ds.

Otherwise none. Just not smart generally. So many gaming systems have issues at launch and I have such a backlog I have no real reason to rush to get the new one.
