Are you happy with the winner of Survivor 42?

We haven't had one of these for a month but with premiere day in under a week, I thought I'd make it now and ask the usual question. Poor Woo can't catch a break after that Cagayan poll.

On the docket: We have both Big Brother 24 and The Challenge USA premiering next Wednesday, Survivor SA9: Return of the Outcasts starting July 18th, and Survivor 43 and Amazing Race 34 both starting September 21 (two hour Survivor; each show will also have a 90-minute 2nd episode the next week!!!!). Oh and throw Love Island in there somewhere, but nobody here cares about that.

Oh, and a reminder about spoilers policy: Please use spoiler tags for Big Brother feeds spoilers that have yet to air in an episode. Episode happenings do not need spoiler tags, so please do not enter the topic before you've seen the episode. Additionally, please use spoiler tags for Survivor SA discussion, as it is an international edition not readily viewable for everyone.

News that I don't believe we discussed:
  • Derek X and Claire on Amazing Race together
  • Omar accusing Drea of making malicious racist remarks at Ponderosa and CBS subsequently covering the entire thing up to confirm its truthfulness
  • Survivor 43 continuing with the stupid "Monster format" with Shit in the Dark, Do or Die, "earn the merge" and other rubbish the fans dislike all returning
  • Tough as Nails has been ordered for two more seasons; season 4 is probably starting production now that Phil's back from TAR34
  • Nobody still gives a shit about Beyond the Edge
  • Other things I'm probably missing

Excited for Survivor SA9 and I'll give The Challenge a chance but can't say I'm anticipating for BB24, S43, or TAR34 much. Each show lost me for a different reason. BB for redundant casts, predictability, and level of time commitment for little payout. Survivor for excessive, egregious twists that make it a game of random chance instead of one of sociopolitical intrigue. And Amazing Race for the repetitive format, going to the same places again and again to do menial tasks rather than showcase culture, plus they falsify a "race to the finish" at every single Pit Stop even if teams are two hours apart. None of these provide the intellectual stimulation that they once did.

Am I the only one feeling this way? Ah well... I needed to get that off my chest. I'm hopeful you guys will tell me that one of them ends up being good enough to catch up on.

Big Brother cast should be dropping in the next couple hours.

Saw an ad during The Price Is Right today where Alyssa and Derek X vowed revenge on the Cookout in the Challenge. Unsettled scores, eh? A majority of the Cookout are there (everyone except Derek F and Hannah) so it'll be nice to see what transpires. The Big Brother group probably won't be as unified as the Survivor crowd. NO CLUE about the Love Island people as I don't know any of them. Only three Amazing Racers. At least there's extraordinary eye candy in Angela Rummans and Desi Williams.

I'm hoping this Challenge thing is good. But, again, I feel pretty distanced from all this right now.

I'd guess NBC wants to get their investment back, even though they won't. Nobody's gonna watch a streaming-only show about people fucking when Bachelor in Paradise, which uses people with whom its audience is familiar, exists. Bachelor in Paradise works because it puts people the audience knows (and know each other) at a resort to see what happens. Love Island takes people who are strangers to each other and to the audience. The few Big Brother folks didn't work as crossovers so CBS axed it for losing money.

I still recall Love Island ads saying "If you like Big Brother, you'll love Love Island" because of showmances. Which... applies to a very small number of people who production tries to weaponize. But it just makes me cringe to see people say that's why they watch BB. Watching people who are strangers to you hook up is not appealing in any way when there's a game going on around them.

Watching The Challenge from last night...
  • I have no idea who TJ Lavin is but he certainly knows how to make an entrance
  • Alyssa saying she wants to destroy the Cookout while Xavier doesn't see her vengeance was not a good look for him. I think she does have more loyalty to him than she's letting on. She wants him to be the last Cookout left standing so he can be putty in her hands.
  • They did a good job explaining things we needed to know, particularly Love Island since nobody cared about that show. It was a lot of info though.
  • The Love Island players felt clueless compared to players from the more strategic shows. Love Island is about fucking. Survivor and BB involve breaking hearts. Shannon was in over her head. If you're gonna be labeled the "dumb blonde from Love Island," play that up! You WANT to be underestimated for long periods of time. Annihilating that first challenge and gloating doesn't work with that.
  • Fuck Shan.
  • I can't do math as quickly as the edit is presenting it and it's not PEMDAS, it's left to right, so I'm only half-watching this.
  • I'm glad some people I really enjoy are here. Tyson and Danny are already delivering. AND they left an uncensored Tyson F-bomb in there! HOLY SHIT
  • Honestly, I hate how this "CBS Diversity Initiative" thing is all black and white, and then they just throw in "Token Asian" and "Token Hispanic." It's not true "diversity" if some groups are still excluded as much as they were before.
  • Angela most definitely has a thing for long-haired blonde dudes. She married the one from her season and wants Tyson as her ride-or-die here.
  • Cely saying "I know I'm good" was such a warning sign. Was obvious that the edit was building tension between Shannon/James and Cely/Javonny for the decision. Did the latter pair not figure out that Tyson and Angela would protect those from their own shows, which meant the Love Island people were in the crosshairs? James and Shannon deduced that quick! Cely/Javonny were shocked because they just presumed. This should be a wake-up call to all the Love Island crew.
  • Azah made a fantastic point in that Javonny was expending energy by showboating instead of focusing. Kyland and Azah had a distinct advantage with over a day to prepare. That and Cely/Javonny being morons were why this ended the way it did.
  • I did like this enough to watch it again next week. I think the format is promising for drama between the different factions and the factions within those factions. But we'll see. Gotta watch another two episodes to see how long I'll be invested for.

Just watched the episode.

Terrence is totally going to be this season's perennial pawn. The question is will he be the kind that sticks around until all the main alliance's targets are gone, or the kind that goes relatively early because the house decides to fuck with the HoH?

Paloma is fantastic.

Oh great, this is going to be a men vs. women season.

Honestly, it seems like the house as a whole sucks, and Paloma is the designated "throw this person under the bus" that production has selected to try and protect the fact that they cast such shitty people in the first place. To me, I think she seems insane enough to at least be enjoyable in her awful behavior, which is more than I can say about the "rational" houseguests, who are still assholes.

So I think it's basically confirmed at this point that Survivor 43 and 44 are both all-newbie casts. If this pans out, 41-44 will be the first set of four consecutive all-newbie seasons since 12-15. (Unless you count 28-30+32, which I don't because they intentionally disrupted it).

It's tragic that they're doing this simultaneously with this "Monster Era" nonsense. The twists have gotten more development than some players, especially in S41. I'd ordinarily be super stoked for all these newbies-only casts but it doesn't really matter who's playing these days since the gimmicks take center stage. S42 favored the players more and it worked in spite of the awful twists... but even though that was a good season, I can't say I'm overly anticipatory going forward.

Also Redmond announced that the hourglass and Do Or Die are toast. THANK GOODNESS. Hopefully they don't come up with other things that are just as awful going forward. Also, obviously, the idol trigger phrases are also gone (since they'd be too blatant now). Sadly, the "Beware Advantage" and the Shit in the Dark are both back, both of which have no reason to be there. Just have one idol per tribe, 4 total per season, and maybe an extra vote found in the napkin of an auction food item. Leave it at that and trust your cast to make things interesting. You can't have exciting episodes if you don't also have routine ones; if every move is big, none of them are.

...it also seems like me not knowing anything about Big Brother is a good thing. I can say I'm happy I discontinued watching on the basis of alliance dominance becoming routine and boring. I just got freaking tired after we got Paul's Cult, the Gr8ful H8ful, the Committee, and the Cookout in a five-season span. And that's, similarly to Survivor, largely because the twists stifle gameplay instead of fostering it. When is Grodner gonna realize that fewer twists get people to take more risks?

Honestly I'd include Level 6 over Gr8ful since the latter fractured around the jury mark and didn't end up steamrolling. Although Level 6 did lose a couple members pre-jury due to the opposition being equally-capable of winning challenges and having one or two strategically-competent members.

Level Six was fun to watch and didn't dominate until the twists fell in their favor and FOUTTE were morons. And yet that was still more interesting than any of the other four seasons.

The Gr8ful H8ful may have fallen apart at the onset of jury, but their members still comprised the late game; only Cliff and Nicole were not a part of it. That's more what I meant: One alliance placing higher than everyone else is now the norm. It's happened so often that I've become bored of the show.

I have to admit, BB18 (the first season I watched) was actually interesting because there wasn't really "an" alliance. There were little pairs/trios and the power shifted pretty much week to week. So it was pretty intriguing to watch even though there were so many unpleasant assholes (the fact that I was actually rooting for fucking Frank at the point of his elimination says a lot)

BB18 was a good, but not great, season. I'd certainly take it over anything after it except BB20. 18 may be in my top 10 but it's on the cusp along with 5 and 11 so...

BEST: 7 > 10 > 6 > 15
GREAT: 3 > 2 > 8 > 17 > 20
GOOD: 5 ~ 11 ~ 18 > 12
EHHHH: 14 > 4 > 16 > 23 > 19
BAD: 13 > 21 > 9 > 22

BB13 would have been much higher up without the blatant rigging. I don't get the hate for BB15, because watching a bunch of assholes give each other comeuppances is fantastic television. BB16 and BB19 are only as high as they are because of their incredibly electric starts, both of which were stifled by a future winner named Cody at an early Veto Meeting (Calafiore was right to listen to Derrick, but backdooring BMC would have NOT been boring; Nickson should've listened to his girl).

But, as you can see, very few seasons from the last decade are high on my list, and the most recent ones don't fare so well. I don't regret ceasing viewership. I wouldn't be shocked if Survivor were soon to follow.

Let me know if BB24 hits the fan like BB15 did. If it turns into a drama-rich comeuppance-fest, I'll want to catch up.

Watching last night's Challenge:
  • Tyson is doing a terrible job at managing his threat level. At this point he'll be sent into the arena every time he doesn't win, just to exhaust him (he'll still win those). If he gets a dead weight partner (like Azah), he may be in trouble.
  • James should've insisted on Azah/Xavier, because when's the next chance they'll get to take out two of the Cookout? (Now? Never.) But... I can buy Tiffany being the glue that holds the Cookout to Alyssa/Derek/Enzo/David (with Angela already in Tyson's corner). Good to get rid of any Cookout since they HAVE to align because people were always gonna presume they're together again.
  • What was that weird Shan newscast setup? Bizarro editing. Also, fuck Shan.
  • Alyssa is here to PLAY. I love it. Only saw shades of it last year due to the Cookout narrative but she's always been a lot smarter than she lets on. She's adjusted to a different ruleset while Tiffany attempted to be the mastermind she was last year... and this group wasn't gonna fall for that.
  • I think the team that loses the daytime challenge has a distinct advantage because they already know they're going into the fray. The team that gets blindsided only has a short window to prepare for battle. Ergo, there's no reason to not blindside them, since they'd be the ones with a vendetta.
  • In the preview, Tyson saying "we have to get rid of the weakest people" is smart because those people could cost him a challenge.
  • Honestly, this show is alright. As the name blatantly implies, the focus is on the extreme competitions, which makes me hesitant to watch anything further because this feels like it'll quickly get as stale as Survivor challenges. I want to see the drama that happens because of challenges. And not knowing a thing about Love Island is damaging to my enjoyment, because I don't know those relationships, and all I have to go on is what little they tell me here. There's a lot to take in.
  • The other issue is that there are 28 people to start and only two go home per episode. I presume there's gonna be a mass exodus later when TJ asks them to pony up. The game design for that works because of the random partners and $5K prizes.
  • Faves are still Tyson, Danny, Alyssa, Cayla, and Angela... and of course Desi is nice to look at too. LOVED Lacina saying she'll have to pay her son a dollar for saying "ass" (holy shit he's 7 y/o already!?) even though she IS a certified badass. She'll get her $5K eventually.
