I'm not sure if we've attempted this prior, and I don't know if we have enough weekly readers to keep a topic like this going, but I figured I'd at least give it a shot. Enough people were posting in my DC topic before that I've got my fingers crossed.

And of course this isn't just weekly releases, all comic book discussion and the like would be good.

If this picks up for discussing weekly books, make sure to tag your spoilers for new releases!

Joshua Williamson just posted an upcoming new Arrow character, Red Canary, being introduced in Dark Crisis. I'm hoping this is a good sign for either a new GA ongoing or even a Birds of Prey ongoing after the event!

As for backissues I've been reading I just finished some additional Tom Taylor cleanups, and it seems I'm starting to get into the less good stuff after what I felt was a super consistent level of good quality. I just finished reading All New Wolverine and X-men Red (The Taylor volume, not the current ongoing) , which is basically a direct followup.

I can't say I was a big fan of any of thi, which guess means I'm just not big on Taylor for the X-men books because I adored his Friendly Neighborhood Spider Man. I can tell a lot of people were heavily against Laura becoming Wolverine, as was I....not because I care about Wolverine, but because I care about X-23, and everything about this felt all wrong after what I though was a pretty dang good ongoing from Marjorie Liu.

And boy do I not like Gabby....at all. Attaching these characters at the hip really dampered the whole book.

Things I can comment on from that list at this time (I'll make my own list probably)

Amazing Spiderman (meh) - I thought is was pretty mid after reading the absolutely excellent Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman (Taylor) , Peter Parker: Spiderman, Spider's Shadow, and best of all Spiderman Life Story (all Zdarsky) over the last several weeks, but after the end of issue 4 I'm a lot more interested. It's also probably the only time I've ever really dug JRJR's art.

Batman (aimless as hell) - This should all change next week, with the begging of a new high profile run Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez, absolute superpower talents. The previews are put and look wonderful.

Dark Crisis (loved issue 1) - Agreed. I feel like this event is a little lower profile then most big DC events (especially for a crisis), but I think it's going to surprise everyone. I'm mostly excited for what books come out of it though.

Immortal Xmen (loving it) - The Krakoa era X-men feels really tainted by Hickman leaving, and it's having an unfortunate effect on my feelings towards all the current X-Books. Still, this and Red are the only ones I'm following, and both are good.

Dropped

Batgirls (just couldnt get into it) - I can understand, it's not particularly gripping. It's a case where I'm following for the characters more than the story. The art is pretty good.

Justice League (it ended but it lost its focus when metal started) - JL seems like it's been a pointless mess since Rebirth and before. I'm not sure when the last time any variant of this book was legit excellent...Meltzer's Lightning Saga?? Even the Johns era fell flat. It's absolutely the book with the most to benefit from a huge post crisis shakeup, especially with it being very likely a Nightwing led team after the event.

Going over recommended completed runs is a can of worms and Ill need time to put together a list like that. So here everything thats ongoing that Im following, with the stuff in bold being the ones I recommend the most. Im WAY behind on nearly all indie books, so barely anything here for that, but Ill talk about them at some point even though Im years behind. And not being bold doesnt necessarily means its not good, just not making my top recs. There are also I going books, like Strange Academy, which I have not started yet but intend to.

These are also alphabetical sotake no note of the order.

Aquamen
Batgirls
Batman/Superman: Worlds Finest
Batman: The Knight
Black Adam
Daredevil
Dark Crisis
DC vs Vampires
Death stroke, Inc.
Dark Knights of Steel
Flashpoint: Beyond
Grim
Harley Quinn
Immortal X-Men
Little Monsters
Nightwing
Punisher
Poison Ivy
Rogues
Robin
Superman: Son of Kal-El
Suicide Squad: Blaze
Task Force Z
The Amazing Spiderman
The Human Target
The Flash
The Swamp Thing
X-men Red

Worlds Finest is a triumphant return for Mark Waid to DC after over a decade of refusing to return, almost certainly due to Dan Didios departure. It takes only one issue to realize what an enormous loss Waids presence at DC was , and after 4 issues its already one of the best ongoing books at either company. Dam Moras art is just as important to the equation, providing pencils deserving a headline big two book and a superstar color and shading team.

Daredevil is a weird technicality, as the last volume just ended and the next hasnt started, but the creative team isnt changing at all and theres no real reason for the book to be restarting at all other than them having taken a break for the Shadow War event. Its definitely a case of Marvel being way too hot on starting back at #1. This has the advantage of me saying that, yes, Chip Zdarskys Daredevil is still in spirit an ongoing book, and yeas its still absolute fire. There no way anyone could read this and not be excited for Batman starting next weak, Zdarsky tackling both books simultaneously, a historic first for the industry.

Dark Crisis is a line wide DC event, which at one time was enough in and of itself for DC who had a much better track record on that front than Marvel. However, Metal was very mediocre IMHO, and you cant assume anything. I think this one has plenty of potential though, and will be following along with the full event checklist.

DC vs Vampires I had absolutely no interest in, but I came to recently for two reasons. First, finally deciding to give in and read the DCeased series from Tom Taylor and being blown away by it helped me get over my aversion to semi apocalyptic DC/Marvel stories (Marvel Zombies-like). Second, the absolutely gorgeous and expressively smooth art of Otto Schmidt stood out quite a bit for a series like this. James Tynion is a writer I consider one of the big protg of DC who has come into their own after being in Scott Snyders shadow like Tomasi did with Johns, however I think nowadays Im a lot more excited to see Tynion on a book than Snyder. Rosenberg is also a writer on this book, but its clear from the tie ins that hes doing solo that Tynion is the talent here.

Dark Knights of Steel is an absolute banger, one of the most promising elseworlds stories of recent years. Its no surprise at all that DC has announced theyll be expanding this out into several more series before the original has even finished. And as with most of my bolded stuff here, the art is an enormous factor, Yasmine Putri completely SLAYING this book from page to page.

There are only two books on my list that require me to specify that Im only talking about the current run, the first being Nightwing. The Rebirth era of this comic started decent, but devolved into absolute dreck. Prior to the current Taylor run it would have surprised nobody if Nightwing ended up cancelled. Now, its one of the best l going books, and it feels like Taylor is right at home here in the same way he was with his excellent but short loved Spiderman run, which he has specifically compared it to himself. This continues the trend of Taylor being given some of the best artistic talent at DC after signing his exclusive contract, Bruno Redondo providing some of the best layouts in a modern book, the one take issue 83 being the comic book equivilant of Oscar Bait that I eat right up.

The Human Target is tailor made for just me specifically, a mid century noir-esque elseworlds thriller mystery about the JLI? Ill eat this for 3 meals a day. Tom King to me is one of the least consistent writers in the biz today, penning some of my most hated books, but when he hits with books like this, Mister Miracle, Supergirl, and Superman: Up in the Sky, he hits HARD. The real star of the show here is, as has become a staple for many go DCs best books, the art. Greg Smallwood on this book is maybe one of the best matches Ive seen for a story to date.

Joshua Williamson was on The Flash unbroken for over 100 issues, one of the longest tums in the history of DC or Marvel to never once have a fill in writer for even a single issue. You can tell that editorial wanted this book to be the next Johns Green Lantern run, a run that completely established a new status quo for a character end exploded them to new heights of popularity. This did not work. The book feels like an imitation pretending to be that seminal GL run in every way, even trying to structure the same types of play beats and lore setups. I enjoy Williamsons work, but almost every beat this book hits is inoffensive mediocrity led by committee, and him finally letting go was a long time coming. However, this brings us to now, with not only a new writer with newcomer Jeremy Adams making a stupendous first impression, but more importantly with the return of Wally West as the books headliner. It was clear from the first story arc that Williamsons run was held back by Barry Allen, a character whose best story ever was one he wasnt even in, a character than cannot seem to escape mediocrity when compared to his far superior following act.

Now, as for upcoming stuff Im excited about.

Ive already mentioned Zdarskys Batman and Daredevil, the latter of which isnt technically upcoming, #1 be dammed.

Al Ewings upcoming Ant Man miniseries appears as if it will be a love letter to every version of the character, and signs indicate that the final chapter may end up introducing a new iteration of the character. While theres a good chance that only the Scott Lang issue will be of any interest to me, the character having had some wonderful runs from Spencer and Wells, I trust Ewing to make this one to watch out for.

Detective Comics 1062 will be the start of a new focused run for the book similar to Zdarsky and Jimenez taking over Batman, and DCs decision to start putting real focus back in these headlining books is a welcome one (I have not yet had the pleasure to read Phillip Kennedy Johnsons currently praised Action Comics run which follows this formula, but I intend to soon, and I hope that the trend continues when the new volume of Superman inevitably starts after Dark Crisis. Fraction has been present in lot of Superman minis and one shots in recent years, and I would not be surprised if they give him the book). I tend to enjoy the work of Ram V quite a bit, and Rafael Albuquerque is a superstar artist and a perfect fit for the writer and the book. I am not as excited as I am for Batman, but its still a high priority. And the hey, the new logo for it they just announced is really good! You know theyre making a push for the new run when they change the logo for Detective Comics of all things.

Gambit I dont actually have anything to say about except this miniseries is being written by Chris Claremont in 20 God damn 22, so its a must read for the novelty alone

I have no particular reason to be excited for the Mary Marvel book, but I will always read new Shazam.

Sword of Azrael is spinning off one of the best stories in the now prominent Gotham Urban Legends series, which it now more obviously then ever being used as a springboard book existing almost exclusively to provide backdoor pilots for new series. And hell, its worked out decently so far!

Batman VS Robin is a pretty off-putting title nowadays, but it doesnt take long after digging in to find why this is an exciting book. Mark Waid continues his return to DC in a book that spin directly out of Worlds Finest, and this should be the highest priority for just about anyone.

Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow. Dont need to say anything here, Connor Kent miniseries in the classic leather jacket, you couldnt pay me NOT to read it.

X-Terminators.uh...I mean I really like the cover! Jubilee and Laura on a team together! I hope its good lol.

This movie appears to be a new story and based on a first meeting, so you shouldn't need to read anything.

If you're interested in the character though....Jon Kent has had a tumultuous history. While there is a lot going on there, you're honestly better off just reading the early stuff (child) and the newest stuff (young adult) stuff for the character...that aging up being part of the issue, lol.

For the early stuff the first few volumes of Superman Rebirth are the important starting point, and the the actual Super Sons series for the Damian teamups,
all written by Tomasi.

For the current teen Jonathan content, Son of Kal-El by Taylor is the current ongoing.

I think the previous DC Animated Movie Universe is dead and gone anyways, since it was so New 52 heavy, and they had, like...a send-off movie for the universe, I think? All the new stuff including the upcoming Jon Stewart Green Lantern movie is self contained.

Correct. Apokolips War was the extremely brutal ending and sendoff to the New 52 line of animated movies. It ends with Flash resetting the timeline. Leaving way for the following movies to do whatever they want. They don't seem to have a connected continuity, at least not yet.

I do somewhat recommend Apokolips War btw. I'm not sure it's all that great, but it's entertaining in a doom and gloom kind of way if you're in the mood for it.

I'm keeping up with SAGA but man, I dunno. Not sure I like the direction BKV decided to go here, and at this point the sexual/political stuff almost feels performative

I was stoked for X-Men while Hickman was around but it went downhill fast once gerry duggan and tini howard orchestrated a coup in order to stick around in phase one of the krakoa arc. It feels aimless now and I'm annoyed that it feels like all the other writers don't seem to understand moira's powers.

Dark Crisis #2

Beast Boy not dead! I mean nobody expected he would eb but when it comes to killing of Titans you never know.

With Black Adam starting his new league in assuming the group shot from issue 2 will get a shakeup. It's probably related to why they swapped out Mary Marvel for Supergirl in the final version of the issue, too.

I do hope this is the start for Kyle Rayner taking a prominent stage for GL post event, maybe as the headliner? Will be happy to see him back as a regular GL, though I wonder if they'll keep it old school with the mask look or freshen him up. His GL outfit always stood out a lot and oozed 90s but I'll be damned if it isn't a classic.

And yeah I have to admit the story feels like its going in an especially dark direction like - if he pulls out the child abuse card for real Im gonna have to be out. Even just teasing it is something Im pretty upset about.

Knocking the rest of the week for me now, with the big 3 releases for me out of the way.

Posion Ivy is an interesting book. It feels like it's incredibly slow paced which can be an issue, but I'm legitimately interested in seeing how this story turns out and if it has any ramifications. The impact it has on the Harley relationship by the end is the inescapable factor that it's going to live and die by, though.

Teen Justice - Still birthing particularly special but I do just love the Universe on principle.

Amazing Spiderman - The end of Wells' first arc for this volume. The last 2 issues really nailed it, I'm excited for the book now! Next issue is being marketed as a large legacy issue with #900...but then is goes back to #7 the next issue...so no issue #6. Marvel numbering is so dumb lol.

Flashpoint Beyond - honestly I've been loving this series. It's way more interesting than Flashpoint original was for various reasons, mainly that A) It's not an event book and is a straight narrative and B) it had a lot of buildup, with both Doomsday Clock and The Button. Feels like and actual huge Geoff Johns narrative rather than just a thrown together excuse for a lame reboot.

Black Adam: Hawkman - movie tie in book, there's nothing to say here.

Batman Beyond Neo Year - Honestly this has been a pretty rad series so far? It could be because of how Batman Beyond comics have been absolute garbage since the character was invented, mostly because the inescable at best mediocrity at worst gutter trash if Adam Beechan. Well Beechan isnt in sight here!

Little Monsters - I'll bread any Jeff Lemire book. This one does feel a bit like it's "just another Lemire book", but that's not really a bad thing.

Been going through the last couple IDW TMNT hardcover collections, finally got to Issue 100. I already knew most of the major things that happen in that final story arc but was kinda disappointed in the way the resurrection of the Dragon played out. They spent a lot of time on cosmology that they really did not explain well and also ultimately barely mattered, and Splinter's sacrifice wasn't particularly impactful or shocking, it only happened because of an arbitrary rule they made up right that second. Based on what I know from seeing spoilers about what happens later in the series I was expecting Hob's mutagen bomb to be way bigger, not just some handheld thing he threw into a small crowd. I'm guessing that while it instantly mutated the people nearby, maybe it will have lingering effects in the neighborhood and mutate way more people over time?
The next hardcover comes out in a few weeks so I guess I'll find out soon enough. I know a lot of people got real mad about where the comic goes from here but from what I've seen it's mostly dudes mad that a trans woman is running the show. Up to this point I've liked the parts of the comic Sophie Campbell touched so I will probably be perfectly happy with it and in fact, I might end up liking it even more.

Comics of the week!

First and for most I want to bring attention to the new series FLAVOR GIRLS fromLoic Locatelli. This being a subbrand of a Boom! comic means it will be getting little to no push, but it was the best thing I read this week. Don't want to spoil anything about it, I just highly recommend you check it out!

Daredevil #1 did not really justify being a new #1, and in fact would be INCREDIBLY confusing to a new reader, but it's still Zdarsky Daredevil and this still stupendous.

Punisher from Aaron with him as leader of The Hand is approaching the end of its first arc and its been a strong one, very different from the usual Punisher fare. I have little experience with Punisher unfortunately to know how it holds up to a fan.

Immortal X-men is an objectively good comic, but the X like continues to be fairly impenetrable as an overarching narrative to anyone not reading every book.

Batman Urban Legends was all 1 chapter stories with other League members today, and every story was a blast. It read more like a one shot issue than an issue of Urban Legends as a result, but it was also one of the lest entries in the book to date.

Son of Kal El was a bit off the wekk, not gonna lie. I feel like this book may be winding down. I was never very invested in the A plot of this book to begin with, all the best stuff has been the character moments.

Batgirls continues to be a a mid book with great art, but this heist two parter was certainly better than the opening story arc.

And finally, the new issue of ROGUES from Williamson stelas the show for cape comics this week with it's 3rd of 4 issues. The Flash villains have always been some of the industry best, and this one last score story of them in their old age has been killing it, even with the Flash nowhere in sight.

Comics Read this week
X-Men: I like more that the team is gonna shuffle yearly than anything. I think cyclops got a nice arch, synch though didnt really every talk to Laura so wasted there. And members like fireguy I dont remember doing anything. Still if Marvel lets this be fun they coulld have some yearly fun with the 1 year commit

Immortal X-Men: Wow this books just so fun but yeah if i wasnt reading other stuff id be lost

Overall my issue with xmen stuff is they keep starting new books and i get lost. Ive read a bunch of this era though

Power Rangers: Having omegas interact heavily with in spaces story is strange but I like it

Strange Academy ended with such a flatline fart that I honestly think I can't suggest it to anyone. It was better than Titans Academy sure but it overall flatlined as a book. Not sure when or why they killed dr strange in the same months and time of year HIS FREAKING MOVIE DROPPED but someone should be flat out fired at marvel for greenlighting that. Thats something you greenlight when he got snapped in infinity war

Wasn't there rumors they were just relaunching with a new #1? A "To be continued this Summer" or something like that?

Seems to be the Marvel way <_<
