They do.

They taste like the species of banana that went extinct 70 years ago.

Just like the type of banana we have now is going to go extinct in the next decade or so.

They taste like the bananas that went nearly extinct decades ago

We now eat cavendish bananas which were the backup bananas

I like both types

To some extent the original point still stands though. What is the point of having banana flavored things taste like a banana that nobody has tasted in the last 70 years?

No. The Cavendish is just more resistant to Panama disease.

I have seen candy makers make Cavendish flavored candy, though. It's just not mainstream.

Because that's when the original artificial flavor recipes were created, and most products now just use the old recipes because that's easier than trying to formulate entirely new ones.

Plus, for at least some of that time, there were probably still plenty of people who thought the old flavor tasted better. And then later on, just inertia and apathy took over and no one cared enough to change things.

If I wanted a banana flavoured thing I'd buy a banana.

I kinda like the "fake" banana flavor tbh.
The cultivar that flavor is based on is called the Big Mike and you can special order them. I might just do that someday....

Likewise, Dwarf Cavendish and Grand Nain are in no danger of extinction, but they may leave supermarket shelves if disease makes it impossible to supply the global market. It is unclear if any existing cultivar can replace Cavendish bananas, so various hybridisation and genetic engineering programs are attempting to create a disease-resistant, mass-market banana. One such strain that has emerged is the Taiwanese Cavendish, also known as the Formosana

Ever since I learned about how the "Big Mike" banana was the go to banana until the 50s, and fake banana flavor was based on THAT (they were apparently a lot sweeter than the cavendish), I have kind of had a bucket list item of actually trying one of those, as they do still exist, just in small numbers
