Excited for the excuse to playing them again. Will probably have achievements so I will look forward to them (hey, this is the kind of "Platinum" trophies I hunt!)
Also happy that more people will experience them and who knows if they do well enough maybe we can get a revival of some sort

Also the Capcom trailer is much better for starting the music before it shows you this is about MMBN so you can get goosebumbs

yeah most Nintendo Directs for 3rd party content they'll show you highlights then direct you to youtube to see the full trailer

MMBN1 might be my favorite GBA game next to Fire Emblem 2003, but I burned out on MMBN2 pretty quickly back in the day.

Might need to give these another go. Heard amazing things about 3's story.

it's funny i think 2's the one I've heard the most praise about but the only one I may not have actually finished (3's the first one that I started actually obtaining these games legitimately)

and throw in the fact I don't hate 4 like everyone else

This is incredibly convenient, because the divide on these games of which ones are good and which ones are dog shit is right down the middle!

What's the verdict?

I've heard that 2/3 are at the top and that 1/4 are near the bottom. But I loved 1 to death.

Also, shame that Network Transmission and Battle Chip Challenge aren't included.

If memory serves me right, 2 and 3 are great, 4 is good but absurdly grindy, 5 is fine and they get terrible after that

4's the only legitimately bad one

5 and 6 changed it up by adding Liberation missions which were a mix of the battle system with turn based strategy game and it let you control other Navis besides Mega Man

Overall thought both were much better than 4, but still not quite the heights of 2 and 3

also I wonder if they combine Legends and Star Force into a single collection or just leave them since neither has enough games to warrant its own collection

They live in tents and their champion fighter is a young black boy.

He uses a generic evil-type navi.

The game is as bad as that sounds.

in theory an entire game about a tournament arc should be rad because it's usually pretty good in anime

but it was so boring

basically, it's kind of a filler plot game, since it's mostly just a series of tournament arcs. Each round in the tournament has some mini plot episode leading into the fight. Sometimes there's also a mandatory minigame attached, like having to catch soccer balls (but they explode and kill you if you miss).

now, the other games are pretty episodic/silly plot wise, but this takes it a bit further since a lot of the tournament rounds are just fights against generic navi enemies instead of bosses. the way it's structured also means that you have to play through the game multiple times (since I think there's some rng involved in who wins the other matches in the tournament) to fight all the unique navi bosses and get their chips (not to mention, they're also split between the two versions of the game).

there's also the dark chip system, where you have powerful evil dark chips that you can use under certain conditions but they permanently decrease your max hp by 1 each time you use them so no one uses them.

Ok what the hell? MMBN6 is on par with 2 and 3. What is all this unchecked 6 slander going on ITT.

6 basically takes the good ideas 4 and 5 experimented with, streamlines them, cuts all the fat and failed experiments, and puts it back into the classic format. Then it also gives you a broken BEAST MODE button to hit which is fine as hell. That game rocks.

One of the main gimmicks was Dark Chips but each time you use them they decrease the HP by 1 permanenly so no one actually used them

The game is divided like this-
Story mission, 3 random filler missions, story mission, 3 random filler missions, story mission, 3 random filler missions, story mission
And you have to play through the game 3 times to get all the "canon" of the filler missions (fight against custom Navi instead of generic Navi and get their "souls")
So of course it means you play through the story missions 3 times and sometimes even repeat those filler missions
And those filler missions sucks (the story missions also sucks, especially that one with the raft)
Because they are annoying fetch quests. Go find X hidden people all over the world, go collect X items but this your controls are inverted etc
Also the game is not balanced at all, sometimes you might get the Undernet mission too early and it's annoying to navigate there as you can't escape from any fight

Also the second playthrough will be super forgettable and you will miss some V2 chips (you can get them later of course but it will be more annoying to get). And the HP scaling of the story bosses is stupid too (final boss increase by 500 HP per playthrough IIRC) and it's just not fun at all

BN4 is garbage but I actually liked BN5 a lot. BN6 is good too but it has some... annoying issues

Every time I played MMBN on VBA I played with the Super Eagle filter on so to me the right half is how MMBN always looked!

I'd have to see how it looks like on the full Switch screen and TV but I'm with this guy, the pixel art is an iconic look that looks bland when you smooth it over with a filter. It's optional, so whatever, but I would have much preferred they remaster the sprites to be in HD instead, though that would obviously be a lot more work.

I love that they were advertising you can use a filter that every gba emulator has had for a decade

I mean, the filter is optional so I don't see what that person's problem is. Just play without it if you're so inclined.

This trailer is better than the one on the Direct. I've never played these and knew nothing about them until Para happened to talk about them the other day, but they look pretty cool. Never played a Mega Man so this would probs be a weird place to start though lol.

They play nothing like the platformer games though and share no story between them
They only use characters (mostly bosses) from the Classic series and in some very rare cases, the X series
They are a good place to start and don't feel like you missed anything don't worry about it

Battle network is meant to be a great place to start. It's really its own series and it's not meant to have continuity with other MM games. Most of the game's bosses are based on bosses from the original series, so that's really fun for fans of the classic games, but you don't need to be familiar with them at all, it doesn't matter.

As probably the biggest MMBN fan in this topic: a quick rundown

1: A raw game, as expected of a new series. NOT a bad game, mind. Just raw.

2: New concepts and streamlining of systems. Improvements make for a quick and fun(also easily breakable) battle system. You're also granted the chance to be STYLISH(hint hint) in battle as well.

3: Routinely considered the best of all by fan opinions. 3 truly maximises the best of the previous 2 and gives even more improvements. 3 becomes the first game where "breaking the game" is almost encouraged by the game itself. From the chips to the refined style changes, specific program advances and even the pre-made chip folders. The narrative in MMBN3 is partially about being the #1 ranked navi, and the game wants you to do it to the MAXIMUM. Also spend an hour battling in ACDC 1 and you'll probably have over 100 bugfrags.

4: Repeats the intent of the first game. It's raw. Again, raw doesn't mean bad. Downside is 4 is both raw and flawed. The emotion window gives a new edge while sacrificing the ability to farm bugfrags. The NG+ isn't bad, but the main charm is built upon linking your game with the opposite color game to have that game's Soul Navis put into yours(RS to BM and reverse). Double Soul is a half and half; in some cases much better than style changes, but in others hyper limited and gimmicky(looking at you Junk Soul). Also gives you(debatably) the most powerful Double Soul in Metal Soul.

5: Improves upon Double Soul and gives much more viability to Dark Chips through Chaos Unison. There are also 3 bonus forms but are they even available in this collection? Aside from that Liberation Missions give a new, fun take on story progression and ensures you entire navi team is useful. NG+ is replaced by a "challenge mode toggle(spoiler related so I won't say more)". Also replaces arguably the best Double Soul in Metal Soul with arguably the best Double Soul in Knight Soul(Go Colonel!)

6: Wraps everything up in a neat bow, both narratively and gameplay wise. Style Change and Double Soul are merged unto a new concept with largely new navis(some old favorites return).Beast Modes are as their names suggest. BEASTLY, for different rewsons of course. Just like 3 perfected the formula of 1&2, 6 perfects the formula of 4&5.

TL;DR..... PLAY GAMES. BE HERO.

This is the only reason I intend to get this collection. I'll replay the first two also, because both were good, but I remember 3 being phenomenal.

And then 4 sucked so I didn't play the rest. The series clearly peaked with 3. Describing 4 as "raw like the first" is a good way to put it; it's just that the series had refined mechanics with 3 and then, instead of building upon them, went in a completely different direction that didn't quite work. I hated the two different versions having to be linked so that had a lot to do with it too.
