One time when playing FFT I noticed that the female Chemist units look kind of like they're wearing penguin costumes due to their blue and white clothing and yellow hair. They also have those brown supply bags worn around the waist. FFT was very influential on the SRPG genre, and the Disgaea series is another SRPG set on a grid of square tiles on 3D terrain. Chemists are one of the two Jobs you start FFT with, and Prinnies are basic monster units that you usually either start with in your army or can create as new units almost from the beginning. Is it crazy for me to think there's a connection?

Why are penguins a core unit in an SRPG? Why do they have waist bags and dual-wield serrated swords? Why do they explode when you throw them?

They're penguins that are indentured servants it makes sense for them to carry satchels around in their design.

Got hundreds perhaps thousands of hours in Final Fantasy Tactics never once crossed my mind that they were based on chemists.

My vote is for crazy. If anything they're more similar to the Chemist's items.

I figure if there was really anything to it a developer would be documented saying so at some point, but that initial insight was so memorable to me. It was a very long time ago actually.

The simpler answer is probably just that penguins are in tons of random Japanese pop culture for no apparent reason.

Also penguins were huge in like 2006-07 for some reason. Disgaea was a few years before that but maybe Japan was just ahead of the trend.

That being said female Chemist sprites absolutely look like penguins

2005 was Madagascar and 2006 was happy feet. Those studios always pull out their banked scripts to match their competitor's themes

But when did Japan's pop culture penguin thing start?

I know neon genesis evangelion was wildly popular in ~1995 and had a penguin with a backpack, but it must have started before that

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

So I thought this was a reference to an older mecha anime with a penguin character but I'm trying to google it and having no luck, so I think I must have just. Made that up, I guess. I can't find any particularly popular anime penguins before NGE, at least.
