The trends of 20-30 years ago are no longer the trends of today. Yes, but the trends of today aren't necessarily better. The problem is that Americans specifically and Western cultures in general have pushed the concept of "progress" as a form of indoctrination - the idea that everything is slowly getting better, and that all of human history has basically just been one slow ladder climb upwards towards perfection (with "today" being the best things have ever been, and "tomorrow" will be better). But that's literally not how the world works, and it's never been how the world works. Some things get better. Some things get worse. Some things get better for some people and worse for others. And even defining what IS "better" or "worse" is a social construct that changes over time, and which we mostly define based solely on our own upbringing. There is no objective morality, only what we've basically been socialized with (aka programmed with) from birth. No matter how much any of us may think we're an individual who makes all our own life choices and can determine "right" and "wrong" for ourselves, we're ALL the products of our environment and upbringing. We are ALL the sum of our societal programming. Progress is a myth.
