From Toxtricity:
FEHLT (Deemo)
Combat Beneath the Waves (Genshin Impact)
Ethnic Cave & Flame (X-Men)

I kept trying to put mars against planet/space related songs but it never worked right sorry

Alice which is so cool. Why isnt alice schach on alice gear aegis?

Wow i like move me a lot more than i remember!

Closer match than i thought!

These arcade people making plastic prog with these cool looping cycles; i like that. It reminds me of that darkstalkers song(fetus of golf)

Inside the arcade machine, there is a computer, it looks just like this! I recently learned that toby fox considers norio hanzawa a big influence on him and you know i can hear that at 1:38 here..its like the chord progression thats in every single mischief makers song(ok i know that progression is VERYT COMMON but when someone uses it who specifically says they like norio hanzawa a lot, there is something a bit more to that)

Mars
Combat Beneath the Waves
Ethnic Cave & Flame

The acoustic guitar in Mars is really good, but the song feels a bit underwhelming in most of the parts where that instrument isn't playing. There's a lot I like about Alice Schach and the Magic Orchestra, but this song falls into the trap they sometimes do where the vocals are a bit too breathy for me.

Move Me is mostly fine, but I don't especially like percussion, which can be a big problem for a song like this that seems to be going for pleasant vibes. Combat Beneath the Waves has some really pretty string melodies, especially the plucked string bits like at 1:23. I do wish the vocalist's voice was a bit clearer, though that's a small complaint.

Ethnic Cave and Flame is a song that uses a pretty cool soundfont I guess. I like how CYBER's WORLD sounds like an old school upbeat GBC title screen or something, but I can't say I'm overly fond of this particular execution of that idea. Too much repetitive bass in the later parts of the song.

FEHLT (DEEMO edition)
Combat Beneath the Waves
Ethnic Cave & Flame

notes:
-Alice Schach's strange blend of rhythm game and gothic fantasy/fairytale elements is really striking-- they do it in a way that's almost always appealing to me; the way it shifts between moods and sounds is often really cool and musically interesting to me. in this track, I like the way 1:13 sets up the track's big payoff, and how 1:52 reiterates an earlier idea, but modulated to a different key and made to feel a lot pointier with more emphasis on the pizzicato and mallet percussion, as well as the stutter effects. this was a serious support consideration for me and it's nice to see here
-combat beneath the waves is probably my favourite of the enkanomiya battle themes, though I think each of them has their strengths and weaknesses. the 'breaths' section really depends on my mood-- sometimes I dig it, sometimes I don't-- but it's a neat touch and a bit of a risk, and I can appreciate that. I've always seen strings as sort of the central instrument of Genshin Impact, but other area battle themes use other instruments reflecting the area in some way-- the fact that this battle theme doesn't (other than the vocal elements) makes it feel a bit more sparse, a little colder, and I like the way that also says something about this area. the strings themselves feel sad but also have a dancing energy, like at 1:47, and the pseudo-polymetric sections at 2:00 and 3:38 are a lot of fun. I have no reservations about the vocals at 3:20-- I love the way they tap out the rhythm with the strings. it's not as flashy or overtly cool as some of the other battle themes, but this has grown on me over time

8.8 (2 left):

8.2 (3 left):

Very sad I don't get to vote for Combat Beneath the Waves today! I first heard Move Me in VGMC 14 and it's only grown on me since. It *sounds* aggressive but *feels* chill, perfect music for when I need to brainstorm or deeply focus on something. One of the few songs in my list without a strong melody that I regularly sing to myself. I might write more in later rounds. Genre: DRIFT & BOOST

Mars
Move Me
A CYBER'S WORLD?

--
Mars [8.5]
FEHLT (DEEMO edition) [8.3]

Mars was definitely the way to go for me in this matchup; leading me on with the Spanish guitar is always a good decision to make. I don't think there's a real "standout" moment for me in this song, it just generally sounds really good to me.

FEHLT sounds neat and the vocals don't turn me away at all, I kinda dig the "dreamy" vibe that shows up at 1:03 for a bit, and the "sting" section from 1:52 to about 2:12 is something I really appreciate too. I think I might like this more if the vocals were stronger somehow? Kinda unsure on that, but this overall sounds a bit better the more I relisten to it.

Move Me [9.3]
Combat Beneath the Waves [8.4 - 8.5]

I stumbled upon Move Me by random chance when looking up new soundtracks to use in one of my earlier guessing games, and I've never gone back from it and rediscovering Ridge Racer as a whole after not playing it for 10+ years at this point. After those first 15 seconds of calmness and a sudden buildup, the song goes into full overdrive with energy and I am all too happy to join the ride. I've never ranked any other Ridge Racer song just yet I think, so for now I guess I can say that Move Me is (currently) easily my top Ridge Racer song to date, with its infectious DnB energy and high-speed rhythm. Solid racing song, 100% would drive speeding down a moonlit highway any day of the week with this blasting.

From the little Genshin music I've heard so far, this is probably top 5 so far for me I think. Ignoring the weird breathing moment that occurs in the second half of the song, the strings are doing a really good job carrying that dramatic momentum that really helps define this piece, and the vocals in the last third are a neat touch to finish the song with.

Ethnic Cave & Flame [8.3]
A CYBER'S WORLD? [9]

The old synths used for Ethnic Cave are pretty cool, they're certainly of a kind that you don't really ever hear often anymore for music I feel. They scream "futuristic" to me and play to an energetic beat, so it's hard to not appreciate them at the very least.

CYBER'S WORLD was easily my hook into playing Chapter 2, not like I wasn't looking forward to playing it after Chapter 1 was released. BIG SHOT is pretty good but mid for me, Attack of the Killer Queen was decent, but THIS (as well as the cool backgrounds the city offered) were what really got me happy that I was coming back into the world of Deltarune once again. I really love how happy and "plucky" the synths sound here, and I really like the upbeat heavy bass that plays when needed instead of taking up the entire song. This is honestly one of the better songs that Toby Fox has done so far for Undertale/Deltarune, and I'll be more than happy to see what he comes up with in the future.

Mars
Combat Beneath the Waves
A CYBER'S WORLD?

Mars 6.5 The drums and bass remind me of a mix between a steam engine train and a tribal jamacian drum set, the way it keeps pushing the pace forward, while keeping an air of funk. The random guitar riffs (xenoblade style) were cool to hear. I feel this track overall just has a presence of joy and fun.

FEHLT (DEEMO edition) 5 Deemo music! I usually like the calmer, piano oriented deemo tracks. It's odd to hear the piano transformed into a flurry of notes as an accompany to the faster rock and drums. the vocals made me think of nier music. I liked the break between vocals where all the instruments just raided the scene and added some controlled chaos. Overall I think all the elements are cool, but don't work well together.

Move Me 3 The only part of this I really like is the r4 motif just because i've heard it so often in other songs. The rock is ok but it pretty much stays at the same pace and intensity the whole way through so it comes off as very samey. There are some side instruments that get peppered in here and there, but the song doesn't stray as much as I'd like it to.

Combat Beneath the Waves 8 I remember kind of liking this back when I heard it during noms. The contrast in the crying violins and the fast paced backing was unique. The violin continues to evolve and have a really interesting story to tell through the melody in the second part (1:40ish). Usually violins have somewhat the same roles and sound in a lot of vgm, so for me to take special note of it in this song was pretty cool. So that and the layering of the different parts made this track good.

Ethnic Cave & Flame 2.5 This track is going up against cybers world , kinda a favorite of mine, so i gave it a couple listen throughs for more of a fair chance. sorry,, i dont like it. Theres some small jazzy bits that puncture the background occasionally that are really nice. I wish they came to the foreground of the song more. The drum parts aren't too bad either, but again they're pushed mostly to the back. As for the main repeating motif is bland and one dimensional to me. It doesn't really match the rest of the song either. This aspect feels at its worst when all the sections play at once in an incoherent mess. I guess if the intent was to create confusion and dissonance it works.

A CYBER'S WORLD? 8.8 I really love how this song plays the single channel with the motif before launching into the full concert version. The B part at 1:05 is super jamming and I like how abrupt the change is, with the pseudo vocals taking front stage. At the same time, I love how as the section progresses, the other instruments gradually chime in for a smooth transition to the final section. There's just a great flow throughout the song. there's so many surprising elements that catch your attention, but the main motif and beat keep the whole track unified with a consistent theme.

Deemo - FEHLT (DEEMO edition)
R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 - Move Me
Deltarune Chapter 2 - A CYBER'S WORLD?

MATCH 1

It's funny that I shared some praise for Shade yesterday, including Rance songs, when talking about Sky of Twilight, but I'm voting against the Shade song today. I think Mars is a pretty cool song! Decent melody with the acoustic guitar. I think my favorite part is at 1:37 when the key change and strings come in. With Rance music, I have a strong preference for the faster-paced rock songs like Rebirth the Edge.

FEHLT is really cool as well! The melodies are very neat, and I like the different layers to it. Especially with the chorus at 1:24, which is my favorite part.

MATCH 2

Move Me was a really good discovery back in VGMC14, and I still enjoy it a lot! Those chords in the beginning and the electric guitar are really cool things about this song. I used to be pretty big into D&B like 10 years ago, so I can appreciate that element of it too.

Combat Beneath the Waves' intro is pretty cool and feels like a tense buildup to something interesting, but unfortunately, for me that never really came. I like the strings and all, I just felt like I wanted something more out of the song.

MATCH 3

Similar to Combat Beneath the Waves, Ethnic Cave & Flame's intro felt like it could've built up to something I enjoyed, but I wasn't all that interested in this song either.

A Cyber's World's simple but happy melody is something I like quite a bit! Nice, feel-good song that you can't go wrong with.

Mars
Move Me
A CYBER'S WORLD?

Mars might just be my favorite new discovery this year (as I've recently revealed myself to be a sucker for acoustic guitar). It's surprising even to me that I'd pick it over a song that features amen breaks and a groovy bassline, but it is what it is.
As for Move Me - It's a classic. What more can be said? (probably a lot).
Match 3's kinda whatever for me. Call me sacrilegeous, but I did not care for Deltarune Chapter 2.

FEHLT / Beneath the / Flame

Mars: A staircase composed of brightly shining platforms spirals up into the sky, illuminating the path to take ahead of you and your companions.

FEHLT (DEEMO edition): Blowing off dust from the old structure, she pushes a secret rune on the doorway to open it, revealing an awesome new galaxy.

Move Me: The stoic leader of the gang sits in front of you with arms crossed, almost seeming to dare you to challenge him.

Combat Beneath the Waves: Dueling wizards fire swirling bolts of elemental energy at each other, leaving a beautiful spectacle in the wake of their violence.
