I loved Chronicles X, I never finished the first Xenoblade game because it killed my Wii while I was playing it.

The performance can be pretty iffy, but it's a massive game with good plot, good music, good characters, and good gameplay. I have about 170 hours in it.

The plot had a lot of by-the-numbers tropes you can see from miles away, but it's decent and not quite as cliche as, say, Nuni No Kumi. <_<

The voice acting is rough in places, but serviceable.

The cutscenes and graphics, well... You know those edited images where you paste a person's head over another person's body? A lot of the time, especially with a couple characters, it looks like that with anime faces. Also, much like what happened and annoyed me with Tales of Arise, there are times in cutscenes when the music decides to overpower the characters' voices for whatever self-empowering speech they're trying to make.

Also, half of one major character's personality is her boob size. They draw no attention to it in the dialogue, but they're impossible not to notice, especially as she changes between three different forms and all of them have boobs the size of her head.

The JP voice acting was amazing, the English voice acting was really terrible at times. Specifically the main character's voice. Holy FUCK it got bad when he was screaming.

Yeah. His acting did not match the animation, even. Like, dude... Are we back in the late 90s?

Imo, It's not as good as X (areas aren't as good, and there's no limb targeting to change monster move-sets), but it's worth playing. The DLC had a better story than the main game... Xeno games just never really seem to reach their narrative potential. Shame.

XC2 had awful localization voice direction, so you may end up switching it to Japanese if you play it. The voices themselves weren't bad picks and some of the deliveries are actually quite good, but the direction was all over the place and you can tell where the actors got no direction at all.

I liked it. I highly recommend purchasing the DLC if you're gonna play it, though; it gives quite a lot of content.

According to the VA for Pyra/Mythra, they apparently just gave them the lines to read without showing them the context of the scene or how it's supposed to play out, so all they had to go off of were the director's guidance.

It's the weakest game in the series, still good overall.

Music: Amazing, as usual

World/graphics/exploration: Gorgeous as usual; worst one for exploration, though (stuff locked behind field skills; the whole disjointed world setup where you take ships between titans and there's no actual transition)

Story: Starts off weak, gets even worse, then gradually pulls itself out of its own nadir (chapter 4) and by the end is finally good.

Voice acting: Most is ok, but Rex (main character) and Tora (early party member, and you won't have a 4th to swap him out for, for a VERY long time) are absolutely fucking atrocious. So much so that I'm mentioning it as its own topic.

Combat: Needlessly complicated is the best way to describe it. You're basically painting by colors (elements) and then using chain attacks to break those colored orbs for massive damage. That's like the entire combat system. But they obfuscate and add so much fucking terminology and other pointless crap that it'll confuse the hell out of you if you don't look up how it works online. I didn't like it. One of the blades you can get from the DLC, Elma, gives you a 2nd option for how to fight that's more fun.

Other gameplay: Extremely tedious bull shit. Blades are mostly acquired via random gacha mechanics that requires grinding for core crystals that will often yield nothing but junk. Leveling up blades' skills is both a chore and necessary for field skills, some of which are mandatory to advance the story later on. Mercenary missions are just an annoying side thing to toss your many spare blades at so they have something to do.

The prequel story (Torna: The Golden Country) that's included in the DLC is vastly better. Voice acting and characters are way better. No gacha bs. No merc missions. Blades are playable too, and the game implements a "switch attack" to change between them that's important in combat (used to topple and such, plus you can heal damage taken if you switch at the right moments). It's literally better than the base game in nearly every way.

Not as good as 1 in pretty much every regard (though 1 is one of my favourite games, full stop, so that's hardly a harsh criticism), better than X in some ways (mostly story/characters), worse in others (mostly exploration, since X's exploration is utterly phenomenal). Well worth playing, but expect to have to look up some tips and tricks for the combat system to get the most out of it because it's explained a little poorly and enemies are pretty spongy if you don't take advantage of the mechanics.

It gets a lot of flak for how Blades are acquired, which I understand, but it's honestly not that bad, and the system does mean that each playthrough is going to force you to mix up your party composition because you'll get different blades each time. Even when you do go for completion, it's pretty quick to farm up legendary crystals once you're late enough in the game for completion to really be a priority, and you'll fill out the roster pretty quickly from that unless you're super unlucky (I farmed a stack of 99 in under an hour and only used slightly more than half of them).

I strongly recommend picking up the Definitive Edition of 1 as well, unless you want to just play the original on your WiiU (which I assume you have if you played X).

And you don't even get access to those orbs until multiple chapters in. The combat had no direction before then because, well, why not just just spam the same things over and over? Thankfully the combat does get a lot more interesting when all the pieces come together.

And in the chapter that you do get those orbs, every enemy has way more HP than everything prior so you spend ages taking them down unless you figure out how to use them.

Dunkey, a dude who hates JRPGs thought the combat was pretty fun. So that kind of says a lot. He did hate pretty much everything else about it, but the dude hates JRPGs. So if you like JRPG BS, you'll prolly like it.

I don't see how that's a valid excuse.
Others like Zeke and Morag were voiced just fine.
And even w/ no direction at all, a ton of those lines can't possibly sound good in any scenario. Did Rex's VA seriously record lines such as, "Jooooooooiiiin Meeeeeee!", hear it played back, and think, "nailed it!"?
Seems like a huge cop out. I'm sure it detracted from the VA, but they should be able to perform at least decent voice work on their own if it's literally their fucking job.

I've been back and forth between buying the first 2 xenoblade games. I just haven't been finishing any games I buy lately so it's hard for me to justify it. I'm like 20 something hours into SMT V and haven't played much anymore.

I saw an edit of some XB2 cutscenes that replaced some of Rex's more... underwhelming screams with Shulk's. It was a pretty considerable improvement, honestly. But then Shulk's voice acting was excellent, so that's to be expected.
