The Spirit of the Mountain
Panditah of the 7th Mountain
MAD LAST WORLD

Whoops I have more things to say today. it's the day of the Panditah. So like, Jewels of the Oracle's whole soundtrack is probably pretty far unlike most of what I tend to prefer in vgm. Actually, I think it's very different from most vgm in general. And in a way, that's kind of what I love about it - Like, it's this mysterious mixture of ancient themes/instrumentations and also more modern/futuristic synthetic ones, with neither side having typical representations, making for a very unique kind of experience. Possibly "enhanced" by that good ol' 11025 Hz audio quality that you also seldom see anymore (okay that particular "quality" may be somewhat nostalgia-influenced for me). Panditah of the 7th Mountain is my personal favorite from the game! Very surreal & dreamlike, and the contrast between the unique droning synths and the unique world instruments works especially well here for me. Plus it has this very interesting dissonant aura to it, where even as it starts to lighten up at :40, the light quickly turns back to dark not even 10 seconds later, and I -love- the way that ghostly reverse-reveal sounds! I may not exactly be expecting it to win here, but I'm just glad it was able to get into this event. Even if it's not particularly your cup of tea, I hope you guys can at least appreciate the unique experience it has to offer, that those who do enjoy may not get many other opportunities to hear or be introduced to. And if not, well, it's only a minute and a half of your time.

The Spirit of the Mountain
Sky of Twilight
Morning Bell

scattered notes:
-spirit of the mountain is probably my third-favourite todd baker composition in the contest, which says something not just about how much I enjoy todd baker music but also about what I enjoy (most) in todd baker music
-I spent the most time on match two by a hefty margin: panditah conjures up that classic point-and-click adventure blend of mysterious natural setting + unfamiliar technology but it's one I can't quite grip-- maybe its newness (to me) contributes to that; its competition is very familiar in what I like and dislike about it (sometimes fun, sometimes frustrating, a little exhausting)
-morning bell's intro is probably my favourite part of the track-- it's got a majesty to it, like the first rays of the morning striking the land. I think its main melody is very pretty but not always in a way that I care about (sometimes it reminds me of the Calm Lands); this is yoko kanno! she has more interesting melodic ideas. I'm left just to admire its orchestral arrangement, which is lovely, but I'm always nibbling at the edges of the track, looking for moments of tension around its idyllic core

The Spirit of the Mountain >> Morning Bell Silent Desert Sky of Twilight = Panditah of the 7th Mountain > MAD LAST WORLD

Match 2 was probably the hardest of the entire contest so far for me. Sky of Twilight got the edge with higher highs, but it also had lower lows. Such different tracks that ended up grading out almost identically.

From Toxtricity:
Spirit of the Mountain (Alto's Adventure)
Panditah of the 7th Mountain (Jewels of Oracle)
MAD LAST WORLD (Mad Rat Dead)

Its so funny that it is called silent desert when it is so loud

I think that steve reich being named steve, is so important. There is some proof in there in how(for example) steven universe and surasshu both start with the name steve too

I think that genuinely the most important type of vgm to me is compressed to ~11025hz quality wav/aif files in mac/pc games from the 90s; part of this is the realization that wel.l..i used to say that yeah myst clone is my favorite genre of game by far(you know this if youve known me for more than 2 weeks) but I would ALSO say: but the music from myst-clones isnt at all what i listen to when i listen to vgm- - - but that is NOT true!! Like it...is? In the sense that im constantly looking for NEW vgm id never heard before, so i avoid the genre i know best (myst-like games is the genre of game i know best). And instead tend to lean toward genres i dont play as much like shmup osts and stuff (especially shmups because they have the music i like most often), and since im looking for unfamiliar stuf- - of course i neglect the genre of game im easily most familiar with!...BUT. I like these games for a reason, the abstract concept of feel and atmosphere is one of the absolutely most important things to me when playing a game, and i think maybe even more than any actual gameplay element. And 50% of what defines the way a game feels to me is the music. A huge part of what i seek in that department is very much my impossibly deep obsession with the limitations of FMV/pre-rendered/etc games from the 90s. The way quicktime animations have different visual compression methods than the surrounding stills, dithering or other color palette limit artifacts, choppy loop points, and even just the quirks of the various engines these games tend to be made with that i have near memorized now (recognizing default cursors, transitions, etc). Some people are like this with nes game nostalgia, or ps1 game nostalgia, or whatever. But im like this with macromedia director first-person prerendered pc game from 1995 genre. Sometimes nostalgia is derided as a shallow reason for enjoyment, and maybe it can be. For me tho, a lot of it is simply that i got into this type of game BECAUSe it felt a certain way...when it comes to newer myst-likes, while i do like them (obduction [2016] is like a top 5 game for me), i..definitely lost my passion for a lot of newer games in /any/ genre if it feels too new, and i couldnt quite understand why. Until i realized. My brain just latched on to basically every unclean limitation and imperfection of the 90s. This is why Myst 1 (win3.1) is so much better to me than any of its remakes; or why i got disappointed whenever mystlike game series stopped being pre-rendered..and just in general preferred stuff made closer to the year 1993. Its because all these imperfections and limitations were being smoothed over (and as i talked about not too long ago with some people here; sometimes the nature of compression and prerendered stuff actually makes something feel MORE immersive, as every pixel is curated for you, and the amount of detail is maximized for the 640x480 resolution in a way you just cant get with newer realistic games with bigger unlimited resolution and movement where theres more room for you to be taken out of it with less curated stills since its no longer prerendered or small res). In that sense, its more than just nostalgia too, this type of game is just deeply immersive to me in a way nothing modern can be, and the style of music associated--definitely helps take me to these places. But also just..Im the sort of person who is deeply attracted to the seams of things. I have a big collection of plushies and i love looking at how theyre made, seeing these seams. In artwork id get attached to being able to observe concrete brush strokes, or..aliased pixel edges! Like when it comes to /anything/ i want the artifacts of how something was made to be visible to me. But the #1 way that feels best to me..is, ambient music on 90s synths except crunched to really low quality where you can hear the crackly bubbly noise at the lower volume parts. I grew up with New Age music so that helps with THIS style especially, but also well,,,this song ties into stuff i said earlier, how player0 had pointed out that the summary of my music taste might best be described as ancient technology. Before i reminded kopaz of the HYPNOTIC WORLD-BEAT advertisement on the box art for this game, they originally wanted the genre of this to be ANCIENT FUTURE, and you know..i think that feeling is why i love this track so much (on top of everything else). Organic flutes, synth pads that indicate a mystical nature of unexplained ancient ruins...pads that in themself morph between timbres that suggest these alternating technology levels between super ancient and super advanced. The only problem i have with this song is that it is in too high quality and it is too loud for the compression artifacts to be obvious, it should have taken lessons from putt-putt travels through time and been half the volume and crunched down to 6000hz so that it sounds more grainy.. .

The CRAZY atelier song

Can you believe that nobunagas ambition is the same series as pokemon conquest

For a while MAD LAST WORLD was the ONLY song on my planned supports list. I didnt wind up being an influence in pushing it in in the end, but im certainly glad that its in! Definitely one of my favorite tracks from this soundtrack that has so many cool songs inside of it.

The Spirit of the Mountain
Sky of Twilight
MAD LAST WORLD

Silent Desert 5 A simple rock track at its core. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing really stood out. I just wish there was a big climax or something with more punch and impact. It reminds me of a modern day castlevania feel.

The Spirit of the Mountain 6 The main section of the song with its looped repeating sound was lame. It was a nice sound i guess, I just didn't care to have that be the main focus. The second part at like 3:30 was more my speed. It had these highs and lows to the sound of something with intrigue and allure.

Panditah of the 7th Mountain 3 This is like when you enter a holy ancient temple and come across a giant door with hieroglyphics that you have to decipher to open. Not really my style, but it set a great holy old tone.

Sky of Twilight 5.5 The underlying rock bgm was cool. I'm not such a fan of the vocals. The weird shift of the key or the melodic statements was also unique, but not enjoyable to listen to. The song felt like it was constantly shifting gears. The build up to the final high guitar solo riffs at the end was pretty killer.

Morning Bell 6.5 This sounds like a very familiar heartfelt tune. Like I mean I listened to this during noms, but something else about the progression tickles my mind. It sounds like the credits to a pixar movie. I paid attention mostly to the high violin in the forefront, but the swelling of the background instruments were pivotal to the mood just as much.

MAD LAST WORLD 7 I mean it's a pretty banger track, but something about saxophones or those horns ? makes me like it less. It sounds more like something from an rpg like octopath or trails in the sky.

Silent Desert [8]
The Spirit of the Mountain [8.5]

I was mildly surprised by Silent Desert, this has the kind of synth and energy I like from the more upbeat songs from Ys I've heard. Can't beat Todd Baker in this matchup tho, great instruments and atmosphere as expected at this point.

Panditah of the 7th Mountain [7.9]
Sky of Twilight [8.3]

I really like the ambience that Panditah is going for, but the quality of the sound is pushing me away slightly. Sky of Twilight is neat and features Kanoko Ito once again, but it really does feel like it's going in several directions at once. I'd appreciate it if there was more cohesion to the song.

Morning Bell [8]
MAD LAST WORLD [8.7]

I do like the general sound of Morning Bell, even if it's done in the symphonic orchestral style that I've learned is not my favorite style of doing orchestra; the second half appeals more to me, I think. And of course, the RAT comes in to steal the vote with the catchy rhythm and instrumentation I've come to love at this point.

Ys Origin - Silent Desert
Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky - Sky of Twilight
Mad Rat Dead - MAD LAST WORLD

MATCH 1

Silent Desert is some nice Falcom rock goodness. Pretty good guitar melody and great drums as always. The only thing I don't like about this song is that synth at 0:51.

Spirit of the Mountain is pretty decent. 1:05 is definitely the best part of the song for me. The flutes there are really nice.

MATCH 2

Panditah of the 7th Mountain is too ambient for me. There isn't anything for me to latch onto here.

Sky of Twilight is my second-favorite song in Bracket C! I actually didn't make it win the bracket this time! Though it was very tempting to take it in the finals. Sky of Twilight has been in the contest since I started participating in VGMC13, and I was incredibly hooked on this song when I first heard it during VGM13's nomination period. I had it win my favorites bracket every year for the past 3 years, which is a testament to how much I love this song. The combination of Kanako Itou's vocals and the killer guitar riffs and all the other instruments in the song is just perfect for me. I only somewhat recently found out that Shade composed this song, which made me laugh when I first saw that because it made sense in light of some of the Rance songs I really like.

MATCH 3

Morning Bell's a pretty song. It has a very classical feel to it, which is something I can appreciate here even if I'm not the biggest fan of classical music. I guess it's just something about the way classical music is composed that makes a song like this less good to me than other songs that I can describe as pretty.

MAD LOST WORLD has been my favorite Mad Rat Dead song to date! That piano at the beginning is really the highlight of this song. It's really appealing melodically and feels like a "me" thing for a song to do. The rest of the song is pretty good too!
