to finally get Sonic 3 released again Sega was forced to dump all the Michael Jackson music (Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base) and basically remastered the music that was in the prototype version and PC versions of Sonic 3

Yeah they're not as good, but I guess this is the price that must be paid to finally have be able to be re-released again

I think the issue is that they didn't make new music to actually replace the missing tracks and try to sound near them at all, they just went back to the original tracks from before the problematic ones were put in. However, because we're used to the ones they can't use, we automatically try to compare the alternate tracks to those, when they were never intended to be.

As long as Flying Battery Zone 1 remains the same everything is fine

As someone who's a big fan of the PC versions & the prototypes I'm... kind of disappointed? Also kind of busy so these thoughts may be kind of rushed. But like, the prototype Carnival Night tracks were wildly different from the PC version and way more fun, but here it seems like they were directly referencing the PC versions? Meanwhile, Launch Base Zone act 2 was also pretty different from the prototype and I preferred the PC version personally (I may be somewhat alone in this), but this time they kept with the melody of the prototype, unfortunately for me. And Ice Cap Zone, which I was most interested in hearing a "completed" version of since that seemed the most unfinished, especially when comparing the two acts, was pretty much unchanged and still feels somewhat "unfinished".

My guess of what happened is they decided to play things far, far too close to the old audio tapes they had made originally for the songs back in the original production, ignoring the extra work later done in Carnival Night in the prototype, Launch Base in the PC version, and any extra work that -needed- to be done in Ice Cap or in general

Those songs dont even have that Genesis flare to them. Sounds more like something 8-bit like Master System.

Awww. This sucks. I kind of appreciate that they remastered the less good prototype ones though. The prototype ones were never terrible, but they're just not as good.

I wonder how they had no trouble with the rereleases of this game before without changing the music until now though

This makes the fact that they delisted the version of Sonic 3 with the original audio even worse.

Eh, it may also be an issue with the music if they're delisting it now. Maybe they had requested to renew the rights on those and this time they said "Nah" which meant they were now aware they have been using the originals in these re-releases.

I'm assuming they have to pay usage rights to include it at this point so this is probably a measure to offset the costs.

I suppose that makes sense but the game is already $40. Ehhh, better to have it in some form at least. Kinda interesting to be able to have these prototype songs if you get both.

If youre talking about the Classic Music Pack, apparently thats Additional music tracks from Mega Drive / Genesis titles (73 tracks from Sonic Spinball, Chaotix and Sonic 3D Blast)

Why do they sound significantly worse than the Genesis prototypes? Those were beginning to grow on me (except proto-Icecap, that one is a travesty)

I don't think that Jun Senoue, the guy who does a lot of the Sonic music, can really do good chip tune music. Just look no further than Sonic 4 for that. I think he does exceptionally well with a guitar and regular instruments though, judging by like... every other game's music he's worked on.

Huh, one reason why these "remasters" of the prototype songs might sound so poor is because they may not have been remastered at all! Apparently someone was able to make a perfect recreation of the Launch Base Act 1 song be kind of "demaking" the song from the Nov 3 1993 Prototype -- changing the instruments to their default settings and removing a couple of audio channels. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amLQuJJGp44

This kind of implies that these are simply just songs from an even earlier prototype, potentially the one sent to the folks that worked on the original PC Collection judging from Carnival Night Zone. That would mean this is kinda more of a lost media type of situation, which is a little fascinating. But also rude. These songs belong in the museum part of the game, not the actual game itself! I wanted to hear completed versions of the prototype songs, not ones that are even more unfinished! Imagine if the other zones had their unfinished counterparts too, like Angel Island or Mushroom Hill from the Nov 3 1993 Prototype. Actually, I'd be curious to hear just how unfinished the other zones would've been from this theoretical older prototype...

(Also dang if that were the case, why is it this older prototype that's getting used for things and not the more completed Nov 3 one? I kinda want to hear how PC versions of those Carnival Night Zone songs could've turned out, too)

Watching a Kyle Bosman stream of this and holy shit this Carnival Night music is so awful. Hearing the whole thing on loop really brings out the full scope of terribleness.
