The hell it is. I've been playing it and compared to playing 2 or 3 it's like getting kicked in the dick, repeatedly. It's not fun. It's not even the "Nintendo hard" kind of fun where you get beat and you keep wanting to try again because you know you could do better. It's the kind of hard bs you put up with because you begged your parents for this game and they can only afford to give you two games a year (birthday and christmas obviously) and it's going to be awhile before you get another new game. Even compared to earlier MM games it isn't just hard, it is unnecessarily hard because of the game mechanics. MM2 and 3 are pretty hard, but they never made me feel like I couldn't beat them the way MM5 does.

The gimmick levels could almost be mistaken for fun, you know, back in the late 80s/early 90s, before other games did them better (I will contend that other MM games even did essentially the same gimmicks better in other games than they did in 5). Oh look, I can jump real high and... there are instant death spikes everywhere... and the controls are so iffy it often feels impossible to tap somewhere between way too little and way too much. Oh look, I can flip gravity upside down and... look at the item I need and just cannot reach. Or hey look, gravity is going to flip, and it is actually impossible to not run into that enemy while it is flipping. Or it's annoying hard to shoot the enemy while flipping. Given the gimmicks, the level design is just bad.

They absolutely did the opposite of what Miyamoto would do when developing games - he designed Mario and how he could run, jump and (otherwise) move and then created every level around those movements. The MM5 devs designed levels and gimmicks and then slotted the traditional MM mechanics into it and just hoped it worked. It doesn't work well. It is an unnecessarily frustrating experience and I refuse to acknowledge that its bad mechanics making the game hard is okay. There are a lot of games that are hard but actually fair to play, MM5 is hard because it isn't fair to play.

If you play MM5 today, you will still find out that what we effectively knew about it then is still true - it's a cheap and lazily made sequel. They took MM as he had become by that point and put him into a new game and they took not one damn second to ask "do these mechanics create a fun experience?" And therein lies the problem - the developers didn't actually try to make anything about the game fun. The made the game hard not for the sake of challenge but for the sake of they didn't want to bother doing better. The execs said it had to be completed by a certain date and no one wanted to stay late working on a game they themselves didn't care that much about, so they finished it and shipped it.
