This was great. The use of split screen allowed for us as viewers to really experience the acting chops of all the major players, and the genuine horror on display was fantastic. A home invasion can often overstay its welcome, but this worked great in a short format. And having the twist be that a jilted lover wanted to punish the cheater by killing his family was a solid twist ending on top of everything else.

Man this is so close to the very top of the list for me. Theres some awkward dialogue here (theres back to back parts where the wife says something to the person at the door and then the husband basically repeats it word for word) and a bit of subpar acting (particularly on the husband who needs to be way more affected than he is). But this pulls off home invasion beautifully and brutally and I held my breath when the intruder walks into the babys room. I wasnt a fan of the split screen at first, but it is actually really clever with what the title winds up being and they use it to great affect when they drop out on the killer at a couple of points and youre just agonizing about what shes doing. The ending twist is kind of whatever for me, but everything up to that is so good I dont really care. This one was really close to the top of my list with just a couple of minor tweaks.

Man, do I miss the TV series 24. All these split-screens made me nostalgic for it. Anyway, the story here is that a British fellow on a business trip in France calls home to his adoring wife, who becomes the victim of a home invasion. After a good ol fashioned bludgeoning, the wifes killer is revealed to be the wife of the British fellows bisexual lover. Uh-oh! While this one wasnt particularly gripping or well-shot, Ill give it points for being surprising. C+

Masticate is one of the shorts that feels like they'd have made the same thing regardless of the letter. Masticate isn't a word you choose...it's a word you justify for. I'd be curious what word he'd have used for the other 25 letters.

This is a really interesting theory, actually. Masticate doesn't quite fit the double meaning they're going for here. Something like "Ingest" or "Consume" would go a bit better since no one ever says "he masticated some bath salts".

On the other hand, I feel like you could maybe say the same thing for any of the shorts? Like, not as bad as this one but it is pretty easy to get a word to fit any letter. I'll try it for one and see how many I can come up with in like five minutes (see how long it takes you to guess which one it is!)

It all depends on intention and purpose for me. Pressure felt entirely for shock value, especially with the drawn out image of the kitten under the heel. There were ways to get the same message across without relying on bad taste shock

Clearly I don't disagree because I had Split at 6! But after Pressure dropped, I thought Split might get some really low rankings on account of the whole "murdering a baby" thing. I could see how some people might think that was over the top, at least.

At first it looked like this one was going to be preachy like C Is For Capital Punishment but, damn, did this story work some magic. It opens with a gay couple getting photographed before the bald guy is executed in front of his lover. The survivor then endures some brutal Spanish Inquisition-style torture before being rescued by the bald guy, who comes back to life as some sort of twisted angel. Awesome.
But what impressed me most about this one was the setup and payoff with the tattoo. We first see the tattoo (which says Love is the only law) on the bald guys arm in a flashback. The other guy is shy and hesitant about accepting who he is, but the bald guy challenges him to change. Then at the end the bald angel brushes his hand across the survivors arm, leaving a matching tattoo across his lovers forearm.
This was great. Did an amazing job of balancing darkness and beauty, without being too cheesy or ham-fisted. A+

there was a lot I was and wasn't expecting from these, but what I DEFINITELY wasn't expecting was a gay torture revenge film with supernatural Biblical themes.

This was extremely moving for a horror short. The filmmakers basically turned the very real fear of gay conversion therapy into a torture porn scenario, only to have salvation come at the hands of an EXTREMELY well-designed monster. Seriously, the make-up on the ghoul of the main characters deceased lover was great, and it made his righteous fury and vengeance feel all the better because of how human he still looked. Overall, a really solid film.

See, what I was really hoping for from these movies (before I realized how schlocky the first one was and just rolled with it) was a sort of Scary Stories to tell in the Dark but for adults and I feel like this does a pretty good job of capturing that. You have a quick, self contained story that is both interesting and a little bit creepy. Here, you actually get some real life horror (being tormented for being gay and rejected by your family) combined with bloody movie horror (ghost lover with a sharp weapon and testicle shock) and the overall package here works well for a quick hitting five minutes or so. The dialogue is a little rough at times and some parts are eye-rolly at best (the tattoo transfer at the end comes to mind), but I still got what I wanted out of the concept for this one.

Theres something outrageously funny to me about a rabid dog getting punched in the face by a washed-up boxer. All those left and right hooksboom, boom, boomhad me dying of laughter. This short was a joy to watch because it feels epic, desperate, and hilarious all at once. It took me through emotions I didnt even know I was capable of feeling, and the concept of this underground fighting ring where middle-aged men fight dogs is downright cool. I love the payoff with Buddy, and the dog trainer getting mauled at the end was great. A+

Wow - for the first I was almost laughing at how weird it was while simultaneously worrying about the direction it was going, but it ended up being great and actually had a decent twist! And it even looks like a real movie! Honestly impressed.

I made a big stink about artistic movies, but I think a lot of that hatred ultimately comes down to pacing and length. A short like this one really benefits from using slow mow and the intense camera angles to tell a story. Its a weird story, with some weird, stylistic choices, but its interesting the whole way through. And the twist that the guy is basically fighting to rescue his pet manages to tell a better story than a lot of artsy movies do in two hours of run time.

Like so many it tries to play off the "twist" of the dog actually being the guy's lost dog, and ugh, I don't know, I almost like it less because of it being shot well because that just makes the half-assed "story" behind it seem worse

This one was hilarious to me the first time I saw it while I was drunk, and it was a big hit but for all the wrong reasons. I dont understand any of the choices here. The whole thing is filmed like a early 2000s electronic dance video. The fact the whole thing is in slow motion is still hilarious to me especially when someone tries to talk. The dog is just an adorable puppy and I dont think it pulls off effective kill machine or more like snuggly wuggly monster. There is a point where the boxer dude is just straight up punching the dog in the face like hes actually boxing him. And then the twist at the end is that it was his missing dog all along, who didnt recognize him at all, but when he says buddy hes back at his side and attacks the trainer guy. It doesnt make sense, and the whole thing is this weirdly made, weirdly shot mess. It is at least stylized, which at least makes it more interesting to look at than some of the other really bad ones in this collection. Good news though if I was ranking these based on how much drunk idiots that are watching this for the sole point of making fun of things like them, this would be way way further at the top.

The upset! Just two short of the finale, Suprak finally loses the bottom outlier position to Mythiot, jumping so high in his dislike of Dogfight that he nearly passes Inviso as well! With only two more rankings to go and a shocking 19 point gap, can he possibly recover?

In terms of the big gap people, Inviso has a top 10 and a bottom 10, and has been guessing Zygote for a long time, so I'm assuming Zygote is the bottom 10 there.

Mythiot has a 7 and a 41. For someone who put Deloused as their #1, I would imagine Zygote--another claustrophobic body horror--is the one at 7th.

There's only 3 points separating 1st and 2nd, so it's going to come down to pure randomness in the small gaps in everyone else's list I think.

Yeah, 126 vs 129 is so close I cant even really guess at which is which. I thought Zygote was going to drop for a while because of how Inviso kept guessing it, but it must be pretty high up on everyone elses list.

Both Inviso and Mythiot account for roughly a third of the total points for one of the top two movies. Thats pretty crazy with ten people ranking them!

Yeah the 3 point gap is nuts. Especially considering how flexible I was with some of my ranks.

Holy SHIT what a way to end things. I was not at all prepared for this. How did the director here still manage to shock me after two full movies worth of this stuff? This is just wonderfully unsettling and creepy and I was legitimately squirming from the beginning. Even before the real horror starts, the image of her crawling around on the ground with a 13-year-old inside of her was off the charts unsettling. The insane body horror of the baby reaching throughout the mothers body and spitting out every single piece of her might top any body horror Ive seen in a film outside of The Fly. Somehow, the real horror is at the end, though. The husband comes back and it is sort of suggested that maybe this wasnt magical all along. Maybe he was gone for a normal length of time and she just miscarried/aborted. The she says she doesnt know if she can do it again and he starts to undress her anyway. CREEPY. SO FUCKING CREEPY. This one is going to haunt me for a while still and for all the good shorts in the second movie, it seems like they saved the very best for last.

Now heres a concept: what if a child remained inside the mothers womb for thirteen years until the father returned to witness the birth? Brilliant.
In this one we get mind-bending images of a distended belly, bizarre conversations between mom and child, and some truly memorable body horror sequences. My brain spun in circles during the whole mouth purging sequence. I was so rattled, Im not entirely sure what happened plot-wise. Did the mother survive? Or did the child escape and become a lookalike? I think its the former, but I need to watch this one again. Easily one of the best in either anthology. A+

It's pretty disturbing but I gotta say it's unexpectedly cute that the mom is actually kind if too protective and possessive towards the baby inside her, and the kid does seem to genuinely like her. Pretty interesting body horror too. And hm, I feel like this really draws from people who are afraid of pregnancy, so..I am glad I'm not one of them.

The visual of a mother who has managed to keep an unborn baby within her own body for thirteen years is violent disturbingbut perhaps not as much as the idea of a father immediately deciding to try and impregnate his daughter as she resides within a full-body skin suit of her mother. Its just bizarre, but I guess I can appreciate the creativity behind it.

Aw man so close to best winner. Still really good winner though!

Its just hilarious, watching these stupid-ass kids react to torture and brutal violence in what you would expect not to see in a cartoon universe.

Two kids get to live inside a toy commercial, but one of them dies (LOL!) and the other gets called Princess by a washed-up superhero before jumping into a bag and getting carried away. This one was hilarious, scary, and relatable. When youre a kid, you always want to live in the worlds of your heroes, but if you stopped to think about it, those worlds would be downright nasty if they existed. Like the Gotham City from the 90s Batman Animated Series looks dark yet inviting, but if you somehow crawled into your TV, youd regret it the moment a bullet struck your skinny four-year-old neck. This short captured that reality. A-

You have an 80s toy commercial mixed with a 60s fantasy universe and a good dose of dark comedy thrown on top for good measure. I chuckled when we saw the hero and he immediately NOPED and ran the hell out of there. The special effects on this one are surprisingly decent considering the budget and this is one of the segments that looks good enough with enough visual effects that it feels like either the director cheated a bit somehow or he dipped into his own pocket to pay the overage. It isnt in that very top of tiers for me just because I feel like it could use a smidge more humor here, but overall I enjoyed this one and thought it was fun

Raka
That was a pretty creative setting, with decent production values. Really reminds me of He-Man, probably intentionally. The faux commercial was a nice touch and the ending is also quite disturbing.

Nobody (namely me) manages to get anywhere Tom's huge lead, and he easily wins biggest outlier! Just behind me in 2nd is plasma, who just barely hit 600. Snaek and Raka landing one single point away in 52 rankings is insane. And in a last second switch due to Mythiot's MASSIVE jump at the very last ranking, Suprak regains lowest outlier!

Thank goodness for a decent ending.
