Any tips or things I should look out for while playing? Never played a Tales game, all I know is that theyre very anime-y and the combat is action-based. What should I know going into it?

Im playing in manual mode so I have more control over Cless, like being able to jump at will. How do I dash in battle, though? His walk speed is pretty slow, and he dashes when I tried out Semi-Auto mode, so I assume I should be able to

It's good that you're starting there, because it's a very rough framework for what the series would eventually become. It's very charming.

Yeah I don't think going to Phantasia after playing the later games would feel good at all.

Haven't played this game in ages, so I don't have much advice to give. I remember things being rough starting out, so don't be surprised if you get wiped in early boss fights.

I think its pretty clear Im playing a fan translation, meaning Im probably playing through less-than-legit means. As a mod, where is the line drawn regarding how much we can discuss that kind of stuff when actually playing a game? Especially a JPN only release?

The game itself isn't a bad game. I will say this, there is a point in the game, where it feels like a logical end point, but the game drags out a bit more.

on the snes chester had no techs but he had insanely high attack to make up for the fact that he doesnt gain levels when he isnt part of the team and he isnt part of the team for a super long time

the ps1 version adds a new hidden character and gives chester scenes that raise his levels to catch him up to everyone else and gives him tecs
but his attack is lower to balance him out

anyway set arches fireball spell to a shortcut and then use it to interrupt enemie spellcasters

How do I set party member Techs as shortcuts? Down+X is Cresss demon fang attack, and Up+X is his flying double kick combo thingy. Mint and Chester have techs they use automatically, but I dont know how to shortcut them

its been awhile since i played but i could have sworn you could set a tec shortcut to L or R
but maybe im remembering wrong
if im wrong then just open the menu and manually cast fireball
still works that way because IIRC fireball will cancel an enemies spell casting animation making them have to start over

Ok yes youre correct I can tie it to l2/r2, but only during battle. Thats what threw me off.

I learned the Demon Swallow Kick, which is a mix of my other 2 special attacks. How do I execute it? I tied it to a button+X, but that didnt work. I assume Im supposed to use Demon Fang and then Swallow Kick immediately after, but that didnt work either

Just boarded the pirate ship to Demeters island. The plan is to bash his teeth in, apparently. Pressing select on the overworks to trigger those skits/support conversations is a nice touch. Gives the characters some much needed screen time of just talking with each other

The optional boss fight against the gnomes was hectic af. The strategy I came up with was to not care about my party members HP, then when the gnomes reform, use my thunder attack and get Klarth to use his Sylph summon. The only somewhat difficult fight so far.

If someone had told me this is a numbered SNES Final Fantasy game, and I didnt know any better, Id believe them. Story progression and the vibe is totally the same. Maybe a bit more party interaction, but that is a very good thing. The only difference is the combat obviously, but it feels like FF through and through. Just beat the Ifrit and Undine dungeons, and earned their summons. I went off the beaten path to collect them, and they felt like optional side quest dungeons. But apparently they wouldve been necessary anyways? Anyways, Im saved outside of Moria Mine. Im supposed to look for the Luna Ring for Klarth, apparently.

Phantasia is one of the harder ones. Very unforgiving especially mid-game when you go against bees that paralyze your whole team. The optional dungeon in that game are a nightmare it's very long, has very few save points, and the enemies can one shot you or petrify your whole team.

My nightmare was dealing with the Basilisks, at least before I got the proper equipment.

Its not too hard so far. Some fights like the Gnome battle and the Basilisk random encounter in the desert needed more strategy than just blitzing, but still manageable. My one complaint is that random encounters take too long, cuz even the early game enemies still take a couple hits to die. Somewhat alleviated by me getting the overpowered Slayer Sword in the Gnome dungeon, but even then, random enemies have too much health, yet dont pose any sort of threat. My next strongest weapon is Gungnir, and I used it out of curiosity, random encounters take even longer with it.

Moria Mines was absolutely obnoxious. My game froze twice while Arche was casting in battle while here, (never happened anywhere else in the game) so I had to do some portions multiple times. The cave not having lighting was just bs, and some of the puzzles were not very intuitive. Ive heard a lot of people not liking this dungeon, so hopefully this was the sole low point of the game

ive heard the Quintet games are good.

Anyways, I was searching the desert oasiss on a bit of a wild goose chase to find Edward, the guy who can fix my rings, when a Basilisk petrified my entire party. First wipe out of the playthrough. Last time I saved was before the Maxwell fight, haha. Not too much progress was lost but still, should have been saving more. Will pick back up tomorrow

I really like Klarth. Hes the responsible adult of the team, and honestly the leader of the group given how much he speaks to other characters on behalf of the party. His journey of collecting the various Summons was well-earned, too. The party chat/ skits really liven this game up

Ever since reaching Alvanstia/the town with the castle, the game has been:

-Head to Moria Mine to find summon rings!
-The rings are broken! Head back to castle!
-Lungdrom says to go ask his friend Edward! Go visit his house!
-Edward isnt home! Hes in Freyland, the desert continent!
-Hes not at the town, go search the oasiss!
-He just left the oasis! Hes back at the town now!
-Hell show up if we collect 5 Basilisk scales!
-Finally met him! He cant fix the rings, but tells us the elves can!
-Go back to castle town and ask Lungdrom about Elves!
-Get the info and permission, go to the Elven village!
-Finally get the rings fixed! Go back to castle town and report to Lungdrom!

big giant 16-bit fetch quest. Unless you count grinding Basilisk scales, there isnt a boss fight to break it up at all either.

youd think itd be a chore to do all that, but all the locations are close enough together that it wasnt a big deal. And getting the story piece by piece never made it feel like I was just wasting time. I can tell this section would be a slog to get through on a replay, though. Using Alvanastia as a hub/base of command really centers everything and allows the bits of busywork to feel like its all still progressing the story

The SNES version has a very old, outdated, and frankly outdated translation, plus the SNES, the game it was originally designed for, has some trouble running the game. The official GBA version is atrocious, gameplay chugs and is super zoomed in, and some intern at Nancy forgot to disable autocorrect so every mention of Ragnarok has been changed to the Great Kangaroo War. Not kidding. The ps1 version runs and sounds the best, and has some extra gameplay features like camera control on the now-faux 3D world map, and a item and grants total control over Cress, called the Technical Ring. Ps1 also has 2 different fan translations, 1 being an as-direct-as-possible conversion, and the other being a more natural localization, similar to how Namco themselves do it. Thats the version Im playing. PSP has no fan translations

the first star ocean game on the snes is very similar to talesof phantasia
they even look alike

different companies may have made the games but the team that worked on tales of phantasia also worked on star ocean so the series are basically sisters who started out the same and then slowly changed into their own thing overtime

To be fair star ocean wasn't even a star ocean and had no business being considered sci-fi and it literally just took place on a medieval fantasy setting like any tales games, and it wasn't until Star Ocean 3 when star ocean actually became a star ocean (or the closest thing to it)

Ironically I think level 5's rogue galaxy had a better star ocean than star ocean

Definitely plan on playing Star Ocean 1 and 2 at some point as well. Either the ps1 or PSP version. As for Phantasia, Ive been busy for a couple days so Im still just about to enter the tower where Luna supposedly resides. This definitely feels like a pre-FF7 PS1 rpg, crazy how it originally was on the SNES. Glad Im not playing that version, Im sure a lot of compromises wouldve been made. 3D world map with a camera and CD-quality audio is much appreciated. The Technical Ring also isnt in the SNES version, afaik.

Game froze so Im back at Zodiac Tower. Not too hard of a dungeon though.
Anyways, when casting major spells, the game pauses for the animation to play out. I gotta say, this game has phenomenal spritework. Some of the taking damage frames of enemies are super super detailed and have so much charm. For a blink-and-you-miss-it type thing, it really shows how much polish was put into it
