Yep, we're doing G-max forms! For the next few days we're focusing on the new mechanic introduced in Sword and Shield, where pokemon increase massively in size for a time and some of them gain a new look and move. We're starting, fittingly, with the (fully evolved) starters.

The votes were spread around everywhere yesterday, but Azelf and Koko quickly took charge of their groups and battled it out for the number one spot. The totem barely wins the day, with its fellow guardians finishing 3rd, 4th, and last.

There is only 1 good Gigantamax form (and it's not in this group).

However I will give the vote to Rillaboom for being one of the ultimate beasts of Restricted Sparring.

as for today's batch I think this is the first time I didn't vote for Charizard but Blastoise is a pretty rad fortress

It's kinda weird how the Gen I gigas accentuate the actual Pokemon while the Gen VIII gigas only really accentuate the starters' professions.

Also between its Mega and Gigantamax, it's clear Game Freak just has no idea how to make Venusaur interesting.

I hate all of these but I'll go for Fortoise.

We're in an odd spot where all of the Gen 1 ones are worse than the base form, but the Gen 8 ones are better than the base form.

i'm trying to understand if inteleon feels pain from hitting his tower because I mean it looks like a living thing

I'd noticed Koko increasing late in the day but didn't think it was a clear enough push to be stuffing, that chart does look bad for it though. I can switch the winner to Azelf, or have them tie if there's concern.

Agreed, the gen 1 ones add very little here. The gen 8 starters at least have something interesting going on (though I don't really get G-max Cinderace), Inteleon is my easy pick today.

It's based on its signature move, Pyro Ball.

I think my problem is more that I don't see what being gigantic adds to the equation there. The other two gen 8 starters clearly take advantage of their size to add to their gimmicks in creative ways, but Cinderace is just the same thing as normal but on a very big ball. I thought I might be missing something but if that's all there is to it then I suppose I just find it disappointing! Maybe it looks better in motion or something.

I voted for Cinderace but I don't feel that strongly about any of these.

I look forward to seeing the reactions to the rest of the g-maxes from those who aren't familiar with the concept lol. Personally I think it generally suits the gen 8 pokemon better than gen 1, as they were presumably designed with the feature in mind. (The gen 8 starters weren't given g-maxes until the expansion so that may not apply to them)

They're ultimately the same thing. All* Pokemon can Dynamax, but just a select few Pokemon take on unique forms when they Dynamax, which are called Gigantamax. It's like how any Pokemon could use generic Z-Moves, but a few Pokemon still received unique Z-Moves.

*except the main three Gen VIII legendaries lol.

Eternatus has a special Dynamax called Eternamax, but that form was only meant as a boss fight and is so busted that there's no way they ever would've let us use it.
