tbh the Legends reboot this year was shitty enough, and yet an SNES game back in the day would've probably been even worse.

Its probably as simple as making a guts game seems a lot easier than making a legends game.

A good legends of the hidden temple game seems ridiculously difficult. It would basically have to be two entirely different games stapled on top of one another

I mean, I'm most definitely calling it good for nostalgia's sake. I can't comment on if it holds up under gameplay scrutiny.

What was wrong with the Legends reboot?
Several things that stick out, especially when combined:
  1. There are only four teams per episode, not six.
  2. It's adults instead of kids, and... a lot of them are tryhards. Or at least they're TOLD to act like tryhards by production. It doesn't feel very fun.
  3. It's hourlong episodes instead of half that.
  4. It feels more like a reality show than a game show, with contestant confessionals that for the most part don't offer much that the episode doesn't already show.
  5. The editing is also too much like a reality show, which in turn makes it predictable.
  6. There are only two Temple Games - one is team vs. team, the other is each team competing individually in order. They're boring and have too many steps and get really redundant. They're like bad modern Survivor challenges and take up nearly half the episode.
  7. It's not Kirk Fogg hosting. Cristerla Alonzo has good energy for some parts but the Temple Run in particular is... lacking since she's not calling it the same way.
  8. The temple itself has some a couple dumb rooms that are rough to watch and not in the fun way.
  9. There is also the absolutely asinine commercial break in the middle of the Temple Run that slams any momentum into a wall of concrete.
That said, it DOES do some things well. The sketches for the legends are great, and the legend is interwoven into the episode as a storyline. Some of the other rooms in the temple are fantastic (Room of the Beloved and Steamy Hallows come to mind). And the fact that the grand prize is money instead of a trip to Space Camp is an improvement. They did keep some things faithful to the original series, at least - getting Dee Bradley Baker back was awesome.

It's worth watching at least one episode if you're a fan but once you've seen one of 'em, you've pretty much seen 'em all.

The original series will always be better due to superior pacing and a thoroughly thrilling Temple Run (especially in season 2).

Reminds me that on Easter I went to a friend's parents, and their TV had "oops all 80s and 90s" television and they were running American Gladiators for a few hours.

My childhood squealed a bit.
