I had two teachers who focused entirely on present tense and simple vocabulary. Then in Spanish 3, the new teacher expected us to already know past and future tense and way more vocabulary.

Language courses are kind of pointless if you don't speak the language outside of class imo. Very little of my high school german classes stuck, same with my college spanish courses, or any of the times I tried to study japanese.

Because my Spanish teacher was awful. I could get the vocabulary down but not the sentence structure, and when I kept asking her for help with it, she just kept brushing me off and failing me for stuff that she knew I wasn't grasping and was actively seeking help with. So I wound up not actually learning the language past the vocabulary, and then that part slipped as well because I couldn't actually speak the language and wasn't able to retain it due to lack of use.

My dad didn't want my mom to teach me Spanish. My dad isn't Spanish, my mom is from Puerto Rico. I took French classes in school instead of Spanish.

Before the concert yesterday, I was kinda blitzed but it gave me the confidence to practice my Spanish with the nice hot dog vendor lady. It was going well then she said a long ass sentence in Spanish that I couldn't catch (I think it was the price) and I was just like...Si! Lady coulda said it was a hundred dollars but that dog was fire I wouldn't blame her

My formative years were in a bilingual household where Spanish was used primarily for arguing, so I learned to tune it out. I can read and write it okay enough but actually having a spoken conversation requires too much mental energy to focus. It's exhausting.
