I always liked Attack of the Clones better, mostly because of the Obi-Wan scenes investigating the Clone Army. Might be the most well done scenes in the prequels. Phantom Menace is just insufferably boring for 75% of its runtime, and Duel of the Fates can't save it, no matter how awesome it is.

Pretty much this.

That said the Padme/Anakin love scenes are hilariously bad.

They're both terrible but Attack of the Clones has some kind of fun stuff with Obi-Wan doing detective work and then one exciting action sequence with Jango Fett outside the lab on the rainy planet so it's always been the winner for me, TPM is just interminable from start to finish, there isn't a single thing I like about it, including duel of the fates and podracing

I still go back and forth to this day. Typically I'll lean with Phantom Menace for the sole reason that it's a comfort movie for me. One that I can easily fall asleep to. Its boringness is a benefit to me.

Also the pod race is cool. At least the concept is.

Attack of the Clones has the greatest heights, that being the Jango Chase

...

But the rest of the movie is a literal snore that I'm not sure if I've actually watched the movie front-to-back without falling asleep... I think maybe one time.

AotC is actively bad in many places. Writing, acting, etc... It has some good moments, but it's easily the worst of the first 6.

TPM has Anakin Skywalker (boy) who, while poorly acted, is written better than AotC Anakin. And Liam Neeson knocks it out of the park. Soundtrack is better, and overall the story is more unique than any of the other films.

Clever in ways, true to its title (unlike AotC), serving as fair homage to the original trilogy, and with a good deal of well-written dialogue.

Also, the pacing of the movie is quick. Anybody saying the movie is boring I would guess hasn't watched it particularly recently. It does not have a lot of breathing room at all.

Truth. Just rewatched RotS recently, and the beginning of the movie is actually phenomenal. The movie notably loses quality at/after the scene where Anakin and Padm reunite.

Watched it a few years ago with my now-wife since she hadn't seen any Star Wars movies from start to finish. Phantom Menace is the only one we took a break in the middle of watching because we were so bored. Just because there's a lot "happening" doesn't mean it isn't boring.

(Also Episode III isn't that good either)

I've always talked shit about ep3 but I do recognize some great set-pieces, and Mustafar is a wild climax even if comically hilarious. Ewan McGregor does a fantastic job of just always being enjoyable.

It's definitely the movie I have the firmest recollection of, but to be fair... I was older. Phantom Menace came out when I was 7, RotS when I was 13 (oh hey same year I found B8).

I mean, I was ready to take a break, too. I hadn't watched the movie since I saw it in theaters, but it was even more boring than I anticipated.

Like you can say Episode I is unique and eventful, but that doesn't make it enjoyable or riveting.

But yeah, Palpatine chewing the heck out of the scenery is easily the highlight of Episode III. People talk about all the good cheese the prequels have, but 99% of the actual "so bad it's good" is right there.

Nailed it.

The Obi-Wan parts are excellent in AotC. They offset all the ghastly dialogue coming out of Anakin's mouth.

I dunno if I've even rewatched Phantom Menace in the last two decades but my memories really start (sans droideka intro) from Tatooine. With Maul tracking the jedis who then discover Anakin. Qui-Gon talking to Shmi about his lineage, taking a midicholorian count, Ben disagreeing about training... about Anakin working as a slave for Watto, then of course the introduction of Sebulba, pod racing, and pit droids. Then the pod race itself happens and after that I lose track of the story.

I remember finding Jar Jar, going into the water to the Gungan city, and Jar Jar being reviled with gungans wanting to be left alone. My mind then just skips ahead to the jedis and Jar Jar taking a ship through the water and getting chased by a fish and from here I'm lost again.

... the rest of my memory is in complete scraps. Amidala exists and she has doubles? Is that involved in this or am I confused from the distinction of Padme and Amidala identities I dunno. All I remember of Naboo is a fight breaking out and Anakin driving in a starfighter with R2 and I believe Padme is nearby. I think this is close to the big overall battle with Naboo united with the Gungans against the droid army? With their water ball trebuchets and all that... and I guess the Maul/Qui-Gon/Kenobi fight happens around this time? Which yes I do remember with the waiting behind beam doors, Qui-Gon dying, Kenobi slipping on a ledge and force jumping back up and cutting down Maul. Then um.... there's a celebration with Naboo at the end right? Kinda similar to RotJ

I actually just opened Disney+ and skimmed through and wow I didn't realize Jar Jar's from the start whoops well anyways that's my recollection and I kinda wanna do that rewatch I've held off forever. I paused the Disney+ skim as soon as I saw it starts with Jar Jar lmao

I know I have had rewatches of AotC because of how much I kept sleeping through it so I wanted to some idea of the full movie and I still don't remember much.... maybe I'll do a "what I remember from AotC" post too

it's close, though, because TPM can get super annoying with the way they're constantly throwing jar jar and kid anakin in your face.

As a kid, I preferred AotC too because of the various background jedi knights in action and Yoda actually fighting, which is what you want as someone spending your free time lightsaber fighting with your friends from school.

Now, I probably still prefer it. It's less dull. Most scenes with Obi-Wan are enjoyable.
