Is this because FF7 uses unreal engine that is owned by epic? Why didn't SE make the game with their luminous engine again? is that too outdated?

Supposedly it is going to come to Steam after the Epic exclusivity is up but I can't find anything conclusive about how long that is going to be.

It's because Epic paid Squenix for exclusivity. That's pretty much the only reason Epic gets any exclusives.

iirc square went to epic and offered exclusivity this time

given everything else going on with square, it just seems like they desperately need money

Yeah, Square is insanely mismanaged. It's actually worrying.

i feel like it would have been better for them to go to steam.

They just had a square enix sale last month.

Keep in mind that EGS only takes 12% vs Steam's 30% and they waive the 5% licensing fee for Unreal Engine, so there is a pretty heavy incentive to make it a limited exclusive even without any additional incentives from Epic.

Also note that Square Enix is a scummy NFT/Crypto company now with a reputation on par with Konami.

Now that they sold their Eidos properties to Embracer I am actually kind of excited. Now we might actually see good Thief, Tomb Raider, and Legacy of Kain games again. I mean, Hitman actually got playable again once they were out from Square Enix's grasp.

I left Deus Ex out of it because those were still good, albeit with micro-transactions for no reason.

I didn't mind them, they just felt too much like Uncharted, which itself was a copy of the original Tomb Raider games.

Which is why I liked Deus Ex, sure it copied a lot from the games that copied it, but it still felt like a Deus Ex game. It was 90% just modernizing the game rather than turning the game into, say, Dishonored in the future. Or I guess maybe Mass Effect since that is a closer comparison.

I played the first two of the reboot Tomb Raiders and enjoyed them as single player action adventure games games. Never found the time to play the third one. My friend compares them to Uncharted, but never got any time to play that series.
Another Deus Ex game would also be nice, but I found Mankind Divided kinda boring? Something was off about it that never got me to finish it. Maybe it was just the time the game came out.

I like how review copies of MD didn't have microtransactions in them, but it wasn't so much because they were deliberately excluded to hide them from reviewers as it was that they were tacked on so late in development that review copies were genuinely too early a build to have them.

I actually know the writer for HR and MD (I know, sounds suspicious, but she is the sister of one of my former co-workers and friends. I am not "in the know" or whatever), and she pretty much confirmed this is exactly what happened. They basically completed the game then SquareEnix was like "You need to add in microtransactions, we don't think the game is going to make enough money otherwise based on how HR performed", so they tacked them on afterwords. They didn't even change the gameplay or anything to accommodate them.

I have to wonder how much those microtransactions actually made them. Usually, making money off of microtransactions relies on engineering the game to manipulate players into wanting to spend money to solve what they perceive as a problem (which, of course, was deliberately put there). Tacking them on after not building the game around them at all, however, doesn't do that.

I'm not surprised that they didn't have high hopes for sales, though. Squenix is pretty notorious for having extremely unrealistic expectations for their games and then being disappointed when they don't reach them. I think it was one of the Tomb Raider games that sold 5-6 million copies, and that was still "below expectations" despite the fact that it was by far the best-selling game in the series to date. Some of their executives seem to have trouble differentiating between "expectations" and "wildest dreams."

they said that they would need to sell around 9m or so just to break even.

on a game that already had assets made from the first game, and a truckload of money given to them for it by microsoft

Imagine all the cool games Square would have gone on to make if they hadnt screwed themselves with that stupid Final Fantasy movie and forced themselves into a position where they basically got taken over by Enix instead of the other way around

We probably would have gotten a modernized remake of VI which is the superior FF title

and the Final Fantasy Tactics sequels might not be such garbage compared to the original
