Board 8 > Board 8 Ranks the ABCs of Death - Mini Movie Ranking Project!

As discussed in the topic for Board 8 Ranks 2010s Horror Movies, we're gonna do a mini-spinoff project while the results of the main project are being posted.

This is a mini-project, so instead of the usual 3-4 months and 30-40 movies, this will just be ~2 weeks to watch 2 movies: The ABCs of Death (2012) and ABCs of Death 2 (2014).

Instead of just ranking the two movies, these are both anthology films composed of 26 short-films each, resulting in 52 total entries to rank. If that sounds like a lot, keep in mind all 52 entries can be watched in ~4 hours.

Because these are all each only a few minutes long, nobody's going to expect whole novels out of you with your rankings. Honestly a few words is plenty, but if you have more to say you're encouraged to do so!

Deadline for this project will be when Snake is done posting the 2010s Horror Movies results, so ~2 weeks I'm approximating. I'll say May 31, 2022. Email lists to me at [email protected].

probably not, since 1. they were all the ones that weren't selected to be in the main movie and 2. that would give us like 80 things to rank which is getting excessive

About halfway through Snake posting the 2010s horror rankings, so hoping everyone's gotten a chance to watch one of the two films?

With this mini-project I'm ultimately more concerned with getting the rankings in than anything substantial write-up wise

I still gotta rewatch them. I'm putting it off because I actually don't like these at all XD

Rewatched 2 over the course of last night into tonight. I've seen 1 a few times but I'll still rewatch, at least the ones I don't remember as much.

2 is a lot better than 1 overall I think

Tag. Failed at the full movie ranking, maybe I can do this one.

Tag. I don't like the due date being during the current rankings. But maybe that's just me. Feels like no time to breathe. It's only 2 movies that I've seen, but the writeups feel overwhelming, even though I will definitely be short with them. Imagine spending longer on the write-up than what the short itself was...

Honestly don't worry too much about the write-ups, I would honestly accept a ranking without them if need be because it's such a weird situation

Really the whole reason I'm doing it now is because it's during the current ranking being unfolded, to avoid stepping on the toes of whatever ranking comes after

I don't believe they're currently on any of the major streaming services, but they're available on things like Fubo, YouTube, Amazon etc. for like $4 or anywhere else you might find movies for free

First-round of rankings and write-ups done, #2 tonight.

I've got about 3/4 of them ranked but not much in the way of writeups yet

I have no idea what the consensus on any of this will be

I may be able to swing this over the long weekend.

My favorite part is looking up the directors to remind myself of their other works and being disappointed that ABCs of Death wasn't better.

Though to its credit I enjoyed a few more of the shorts than I remembered. Still when half of them aren't great or downright awful it can really feel like a slog.

So I "obtained" the first ABCs collection, and there were no subtitles in the first short film when the woman spoke Spanish(?). Was that a deliberate artistic choice, or do I need to obtain another version of the movie collection that has subtitles?

It is supposed to have subtitles, and I would recommend having them because a good portion of the films are in different languages

You can usually download just subtitle files rather than redownloading the entire movie

Also many (not necessarily all) of the shorts can be found individually on YouTube should you need to find them that way

I've been going through my write-ups and trying to attach clips where I could find them for anyone who didn't get to participate but still wanted to catch ones that caught their eye, and honestly I'm about 20 in so far and haven't found any yet that were just impossible to get (although a couple are clearly cams or censored for youtube)

Thanks for the notification! I found the first movie and started watching it but didn't get too far yet. With the weekend coming, I hope I can go through it.

Good to know. There are a handful I want to watch again when I get time.

I feel like when the directors were contacted about ABCs #1, the message said something like: "Pick a letter and make a short film about death. It can be about anything you want!"

Then when the directors were contacted about ABCs #2, the message said: "Pick a letter and make a short film about death. It can be about anything other than toilets, farting, and turds!"
