What a dumbass troll attempt. MKV is a more unwieldy file format than MP4 or MOV like how webp is more unwieldy than jpg or png, but the two file formats are in totally different leagues.

Webp would ideally has some functionality upgrade over jpg and png, the same way that MKV files can use custom subtitles and audio tracks whereas other file formats are hardlocked into what they have. It requires a specialist video player like VLC. People who want a high quality picture and the functionality of MKV seek out that file format. It hasn't beat out other more universal file formats because it takes up more space and requires more specialised software to properly run.

The difference being that webp is a format that hasn't been widely adopted by picture-sharing platforms like social media and discord, and yet is being pushed as a new standardised file format by one of the biggest tech giants on the planet. It has zero functionality for the average layman who just wants to download pictures from the internet to use and share freely, of which webp actually hinders the average layman.

It would be one thing if webp was a format used by enthusiasts to have an enhanced image-viewing experience, like how MKV offers a specialised video-viewing experience with extra functionality for enthusiasts. The reality is that people are uploading jpg and png images and they're being converted to a less user friendly format that's harder to use because Google set a totally arbitrary mandate.

TC's analogy would work if MP4 and MOV and WMP and whatever other standardized file formats were being forcibly converted to MKV, whether those videos required the functionality of that format or not. That's not what's happening. If webp becomes a standardised file format that other platforms adopt, where webp images can be shared and enjoyed just as easily as other formats with some advanced functionality that webp offers, then fine - non-issue. But as it stands, other platforms haven't adopted it as a standardised file format, and it's a pain in the ass when it's being forced as one by a tech giant despite offering next to no additional benefit alongside a mountain of issues.

You use an MKV file when you want to watch an Akira Kurosawa movie, where you might want to switch between subbed and raw viewings. It's a format that you seek out for its specialised functionality. Webp tends to be a pain in the ass you have to deal with when you just wanted to share a funny meme with your discord server. There's no tangible benefit to webp at this point, there is a tangible benefit to MKV to the people seeking it out.
