I think there is usually a list of maybe 5-6 films that are considered at the tippy top of the tier list for Disney.

Which is their worst full length animated feature film?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Walt_Disney_Animation_Studios_films

I mean... it's gotta be Home on the Range right? It is the only one that I feel legitimately insults my intelligence and just assumes that because it's Disney, we will laugh.

Chicken Little, movie had almost no good quality about it. At least Home on the Range had excellent hand drawn animation. Chicken Little computer animation was still bad even for its time. I hated it watching it as a kid and even watching it now, it's not something I hate but I just can't call good either. Even my niece and nephews who are ages 8-11 didn't even like it. It's a shame because the same guy directed Emperor's New Groove which was an absolute hilarious film.

I know it has a cult following, but they must have some incredible rose colored glasses because Black Cauldron is not good at all. Just because it's a "darker" Disney film doesn't make it better or interesting.

The fact that it was used as an example by the company itself on what NOT to do and kicked their asses in gear to improve their quality is telling.

For my money, it's Pocahontas.

Let's take a 14 year old girl who was seduced and abandoned by a 30-something European guy and make it a story about a Native American Tyra Banks and an Aryan Mel Gibson. And we can sweep that whole "four centuries of genocide" thing under the rug too. That was the equivalent of a raccoon and a dog chasing each other before becoming friends.

If it had been an original story "inspired" by Pocahontas, it would have just been a generic movie. For sanitizing history, I think it earns a special place of dishonor. Forget Song of the South. Pocahontas is the film Disney should lock away indefinitely.

I have seen very few of the post 2000s Disney animation films, so ignoring those even though all the worst ones are in that batch as far as I always hear, the worst ones are like... well, also ignoring the package features of the war/post war period cause that would just be unfair

Pocahontas for being racist
The Rescuers for just being ugly and boring
Fantasia 2000 for being pointless and awful

AristoCats is pretty bad. Technically 101 Dalmatians was the first one to ruin Disney animation by using the xerox method of colouring, but that's a vastly better film so I'mma give AristoCats those minus points instead.

I also don't really like Sword in the Stone because I'm brave and controversial, but I don't think it's quite as bad as the above.

Arguably the worst sin a movie can commit is being forgettable. I watched Black Cauldron when I was in my early teens and still way deep into fantasy / medieval crap - thus giving me every reason to love it - and it's kind of remarkable that I can't remember anything about the movie. I didn't enjoy it while I was watching it, and the memory of what I'd just watched was gone in a flash. I vaguely remember that the little dog character sacrifices himself at the end, but that's it.

I skipped a lot of early-2000's fare like Chicken Little and Home on the Range. But out of what I have seen, Black Cauldron takes the cake.

I saw home on the range in theaters and didn't hate. Honestly I was pretty high though

For me personally it's brother bear. The movie only has decent animation for the first like 20 minutes, the movie is just boring too, at least home on the range had psychedelic yodeling sequences. I honestly can't find anything to like about brother bear. Back in the day a friend and I were doing a Disney marathon and this is the only movie we either did not finish or I don't remember anything from mid-way through

Anyway Pocahontas is definitely the worst. It uses 100% the John Smith version of the story which he literally made up to gain clout in Europe after faking his death to get away from Pocahontas.

Disney was contacted by the first nations when the movie was in production to get an accurate account of what actually happened and they were told to fuck off.

Yea even ignoring the political incorrectness I never liked pocahontas. The first song she sings is kind of a banger but that's about it. Even as a kid the entire movie felt like it lived in its own twisted reality that I never gelled with. And they based pocahontas off some super model that's not even native American

>Native American woman and European man fall in love
>European man is about to be executed for what other Europeans have done
>Native American woman intercedes and rescues him
>Native American woman and European man build their own cabin far away from everyone else

Would that have been too difficult for Disney?

Kids would have been like, "Yay, happy ending. They're in love." Adults would have realized they're living in isolation to get away from the conflict around them. That might have been a decent story. But Disney had to do like they usually do and give their version of history - using fabricated retellings of actual events featuring actual people.

Pocahontas is definitely up there. Offensive and just plain boring, though I do at least remember more of Pocahontas than I did Black Cauldron (and the 'Savages' song had a good underlying message for me at an impressionable age). Even more insulting is that Pocahontas sits right smack in the middle of the otherwise-exemplary Disney Renaissance period.

The best thing I can say about Pocahontas is that at least it's not the direct-to-video sequel that romanticizes her time in England and return to America that in real life resulted in her death at age 21 before the ship could even leave England.

I never watched the black cauldron, but now I really want to see it. Supposedly it was the movie that made that put Disney significantly in the red for how bad it performed in the box office and how expensive it was to make. From reading the wikipedia, it sounded like it had massive Corporate meddling because of how dark the movie was.

I like Disney's animated films in general, but goddamn have they made a lot of awful movies. I tend to forget all the really bad ones, but seeing them listed in this topic makes me realize how many there are. Chicken Little, Brother Bear, Home on the Range. All total shit. And the criticisms of Pocahontas are valid. The animation is good, but the story does some nasty historical revisionism. I don't like Atlantis or Emperor's New Groove either.

I think it's kind of official information. IIRC Jeffrey Katzenberger became chairman of Disney during its development and just nope'd what the team were in the middle of making for being too dark.

Wow I just read your message after I watched the movie and yeah, it was a total snore fest. My nephew told me, "Are you punishing me for getting a B- on my spelling test?" after the movie was done. I still think Chicken Little is the worst, but man does this movie come close. Someone said it, but I think it has some really cool character design like the Horn King, but man was it forgettable. I can definitely see some parts where the movie was suppose to go a dark route, but even I think that wouldn't have saved this movie either. The script and everything was a mess. Great hand drawn animation though.
