My girlfriend is from an Indian family (the only of their children born in America), and I was telling her some people were upset at the parents in Ms. Marvel and she laughed and said that's tame for most South Asian parents. Just hearing stories from her about other South Asian family members, I'm dying at this weak shit people are upset at. Like it can get a lot worse.

I can get real deep into it, but man, it's not bad and there aren't kids who grew up in that culture that are going to resent their parents like that. In fact, they're probably closer to their parents a lot of times because of how their family culture is too. I don't know that I can really do justice explaining it since I didn't grow up in that culture, but I can just see being a guy on the outside of it right now, but you really need to take a step back and consider that culture before you start flinging stuff like that over these characters.

The parents sucked. Mostly the mom.

If people want to accept that in their own lives that is 100% their business, but that was what I was talking about when I said the show did some things I really was turned off by.

as someone from a rather free-reigns under-the-radar single-parent upbringing that didn't seem too extreme or anything, I mean they're close with their child's friend, and Kamala clearly has a rather active social media presence

as a convention frequenter since uni, I mean yeah they can be a rather dangerous place for minors being targeted, so having reservations about it is absolutely valid for a parent and they tried to come up with a compromise, even making a failed attempt to appeal to Kamala with their own quickly gathered cosplay.

do I think teens should be allowed to attend with friends? yeah sure, but it's not like there was really that much of a dialogue about it with the request being rather last-minute, but there was movement from the parents side and Kamala didn't really share that much of her own side of it so well

like I said, my own experience is with having completely free reigns, but the parents I saw here... weren't such a strongly overbearing big deal to me? moreso than what I had for sure but hardly extreme, at least from what I saw this episode

Mind you most of my complaint within the show is they were annoying and I wasn't really thinking much of real life applications, just to be clear!

oh definitely I get that, they're definitely played more antagonistic in this episode but yeah the plot of the week frames them that way here

when they came in with the Hulk compromise I was absolutely feeling Kamala's pain that this "compromise" realllllly wasn't what she wanted and steps over all the work she put in her own costume (although I'd point out that she hasn't shown her parents all the hard work she's put into it)

It only took me a couple of videos from that guy to be like 'hm, I agree with this specific opinion but something feels a bit wrong with how he presents everything' (I think it was Batwoman being bad or something, which it was to me) and then I went to his channel and everything was like 'oh yeah there it is' lol

Honestly I'm kinda with the parents. Kamala very much has an unhealthy obsession with Captain Marvel and the Avengers. She's also so caught up in fantasy that she thinks she can jump out a window and grab a tree branch to get down. I think for this concept to work they need to show us that the parents have some valid concerns.

That doesn't seem to be the story they want to sell, though. At least, not yet.

I get that. I really do. There's been a lot of times where I've told my girlfriend I don't like certain parts of her culture, and she honestly agrees. And it takes time for South Asian families to slowly get out of that. Without getting into the reasons why, something majorly negative happened with my sister's family that resulted in her parents easing on a lot of their cultural beliefs because of it, and they've had a falling out with certain parts of their family as a result

However, "it's just their culture" is not a horrible argument for what we're seeing here. We have overbearing parents, who were pushed from a young age to always be the best they could be to go places with the dream to get the hell out of India.* Where they had to bust their asses and sacrifice so much in order to even make it to America, and they want to make sure that everything they sacrificed for their children comes to fruition and they can succeed and become better. Where they now have a daughter growing up in an Americanized culture they just don't understand, but they are trying very hard to understand so they can be involved in their daughter's life and interests as much as they can, but still struggling to, while also dealing with their flighty daughter who is a literal teenager lashing out.

Like I'm sure they're going to get into all of that in the show because why not, but I think it's important to take a step back and consider a lot of why they may be acting the way they do before making broad judgments.

*India is a fucking shit show of a country where the government is corrupt as hell, and they had the largest protest in the world recently and nobody in America even reports or comments on it, when they absolutely should be. Read up on it. It's sad, but interesting.

Anyway I have issues with Loki but it's not because he's presented as incompetent. His competency in Loki is on par with his MCU showings, really, where he's generally presented as extremely effective while executing a plan he concocts, but not the best at adapting in general when thrown into situations that are unfamiliar to him (which guess what the plot of Loki is).

Yeah, that's legit. One of my problems with Loki is that he never actually concocts any plans. That's his thing, so how come he never does it?

I mean the idea I guess is he's perpetually a fish out of water. If you take that interpretation he's in an unfamiliar setting, he's as said, not out of character and consistent with what you'd expect.

But he probably should be able to find water within 6 episodes, you'd think, that's kinda the issue. But it's within his range.

yeah Taskmaster is maybe the only MCU character adaptation that straight up bummed me out

the action scene with her were pretty cool at least, but the total lack of personality was like Wolverine-movie-Deadpool level bad

I just don't understand why. And the defense they gave for writing Task like that sucked so much I'm actually now worried about Thunderbolts, when it was easily the most anticipated thing Marvel could do for me now.

Loki really hasn't gotten enough interactions with the non-Thor cast imo, it sucks

Just course correct with Taskmaster and have it be someone else more in line with comic Tasky using the tech from Black Widow. Changes the origin of his powers but whatever, that doesn't feel that important.

Have Taskmaster show up again and take off the helmet and it's inexplicably Ben Kingsley again somehow

I like the style of Ms. Marvel and I want to like Kamala's character, but man - she is incredibly naive and stupid. Was I that naive and stupid at 16? I'm pretty much certain I was, but I feel like the older I get, the less tolerance I have for dumb teenage characters. I've rolled my eyes way too many times at some of the stupid things she has done.

Although, I am curious if anyone else noticed the completely unexpected throwback to Adventures in Babysitting? That was the most amusing scene in Episode 2.
