NATO is a defensive alliance. Allowing a country currently under attack to join would just be nonsensical. They applied in like 2008 and we've left them hanging the entire time. Why? Take a look at the state of the world today. Russia, never weaker. NATO and Europe's dependence on the USA, never stronger. It was a foreign policy strategy. The analysts at State knew if they waited long enough Putin wouldn't be able to help himself. And this would be the result. Finland and Sweden will get in immediately though, because they are valuable assets that haven't ever been interested.
