It was obvious symbolism of her being on the top with all the money, a position the whole family wanted to be.
Yeah it's the reversal of positions. Everyone looked down on her in their own way throughout the movie and this is her opportunity to return the favor.

But it's a moment, nothing more. Since the film ends there, we don't get to see what follows from that. Does Marta lose her kindness now that her family is rich? How far do the Thrombeys fight her to get it back?

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. At that point, the film said what needed to be said.

I like how at the end Jamie lee curtis was looking up at her defiantly while smoking her cigarette, sort of like she's saying "I'm not gonna beg you for what is my birthright" like the rest of the family of sycophants would be doing.

Linda was going through a lot at that moment. Yes there's defiance, but she'd also just learned that her husband was cheating on her, so there's her coming down from that. Furthermore, she also came to the realization that she'd "lost the game" as it were. Her first thing when talking about her father was knowing that "you had to find a game to play" with him, and in that, she believed she was the best at it, was his absolute favorite, and the one to inherit the most.

I wonder if she even had a small amount of respect for Marta for having figured out Harlan better than she could.

I think people went in thinking it would be a traditional "whodunnit" like the old Murder on the Orient Express (not the new one that sucked ass) and were upset that the actual culprit wasn't the main mystery or twist. It was a really well done play on the genre and I think Rian Johnson really knocked it out of the park.

It seems kind of unreal that the same guy who did Knives Out also did The Last Jedi

I don't know how to explain that.

Legit one of my favorite movies.
How everything was set up and tied up was so good.

My only *kinda* complaint is that I don't like seeing people vomit (even if it's fake), so those scenes grossed me out, but whatever.

I do.

But we really don't need to have every topic about Knives Out devolve into "Hey did you know he also directed The Last Jedi?"

We know.

tbf, I feel like working on Knives Out had a lot less restrictions than a major money-grab Disney franchise movie like Star Wars.

Not really imo. He did to TLJ what he does with his other movies. just takes the genre conventions and flips it on their head. He just happened to do it with one of the largest franchises in the world and mid-trilogy with no overarching plan in mind (which is Abrams' fault).

I think if Johnson directed all 3 sequel movies they'd probably be super highly regarded. He basically gave fans what they've been wanting for the longest time.

It was not amazing. The message behind the movie seems to just be, "Rich white people are evil" which is a cliche as they come.

That's not the message.

Benoit states the message clear as day when he talks to Marta at the end.

She won not by being smarter or more clever or more devious than the other members of the family. She won by being kind.

Yeah, the ethnic maid is the kind one and the rich white people are the evil ones. Predictable af.

The antagonists were all white. The movie very clearly plays upon that stereotype.

I liked it -- I do enjoy whodunits, though. I think as a whole, though, some of the TV movies/episodes with David Suchet as Hercule Poirot, were superior in all aspects.

Yes, rich white people being villains is definitely a stereotype, but a rather fitting one for the movie and I think one that's much closer to reality than most other stereotypes...

lol i no rite? Rian 'Subvert Expectations' Johnson really missed the boat by not having a poor, overworked white immigrant get one over on a family of spoiled-rotten, old money New England Latinos. *rolls eyes*

Also she was the only one who was self-made between them all right? She runs her own successful business so isn't hard up for cash like the rest?

Anyone immediately pick up on the hilarious "the family doesn't know where Marta's from" joke where they keep saying she's from Uruguay, Paraguay, what have you. Also on rewatch the racist husband remembers that night as him being all friendly and welcoming to Marta and she's grateful and happy to be included, and then you find out that scene was about him using her as a prop for his anti-immigration argument.

That really cracked me up. This movie is so great you can rewatch it and love more stuff about it

With the initial million dollar loan that her dad gave her. That was mentioned.

Don Johnson does an incredibly seamless bit there (that if I recall wasn't initially scripted) where, while extolling her virtues, he also hands Marta his dessert plate expecting her to take it, despite that not being her job.

That's one thing I really like about this movie is that it's rather fair when it comes to the politics. Michael Shannon was absolutely hilarious in that one scene when the family was in-fighting.

Oh yeah guess I should put that self-made part in quotations. But I mean compared to all of them...

Also just rewatched and that's a hilarious bit by don that dude is awesome I loved his character. Great catch.

Weird coincidence but I love how the director makes a great movie every 7 years. First you had 2005's Brick with JGL (who I love) and then 7 years later you had Looper with JGL again and finally you had Knives Out, once more 7 years later. Unintentional but still awesome
