Anyone else play this?

I just finished it for the first time on the default mode and am considering starting a hardcore file.

If you're not familiar with it:
It uses Fire Red as the base game
It includes all the Pokmon up to gen 8 (but not including Hisui)
It's quite hard, but not ridiculous
There's a built-in level cap
You can turn off EVs and IVs
There are a tonne of quality-of-life improvements. For example: you can change natures and abilities and pay for egg moves
Includes megas, raid dens, and difficult optional battles

It's an excellent Pokmon game.

My final team was Kangaskhan, G-Darmanitan, Landorus, Mimikyu, Melmetal, and Conkeldurr.

I played it for a bit. I agree it's a really cool idea and very well made. I'm not sure if I give the edge to RR or Crystal Clear as my favorite pokemon hack but I will say that I didn't play enough of RR yet to make a final decision. This topic is making me want to get back to it...

Thank you for bringing this to my attention, great way to scratch that Pokemon itch the main games can't ever reach.

Do trade evolutions happen by regular level up or an alternate method?

It really is an excellent game. My main complaint is it's a little too stacked against you after the most recent updates, with a few mechanics I'm not fond of. Like, giving trainers overpowered legendary forms entirely unavailable to you and making dice rolls predetermined feels a little cheap. It's more a boss rush than anything, in all honesty.
Still, it's a brilliant balance between Kaizo hacks and stuff like Renegade Platinum, which is basically vanilla Pokemon but with reasonable difficulty as opposed to kids game difficulty. I think the latter is a bit more my style and has better balancing, but Radical Red is such an impressive game. It's a shame that the best Pokmon games of the last few years haven't even been made by Gamefreak.

Trade evolutions are basically by an evolutionary stone, now. There's documentation for all changes like that on a Google Doc if you wanna look for it, although I'm not entirely sure I'm good to link it here.

I would say don't spoil yourself if you haven't played it already. I guess looking stuff up could be useful if you want to know how trade evolutions work, for example, but there's lots of other changes that are SO cool when you stumble into them for the first time without knowing.

Did FireRed have the atk/sp.atk split or was that after FireRed?

That was in Diamond and Pearl, so after Fire Red. Although this hack might be one of those that adds that to Gen 3, I don't know.

It's pretty good, I've been meaning to give it a second playthrough. From what I've seen it's fixed one of the biggest issues I had with it now (originally it made EV training pretty tedious until long after the point where it's reasonable to go without, but the new no EV option solves that problem) so that's nice.

I started playing it last fall or so, but I got to Pewter, realized I was going way too hard on trying to catch everything I could, put it down to take a break, and never went back to it.

Been playing Hardcore mode. It is very hard.

Just beat Lt. Surge with a team of:
Gastrodon
Arbok (it's Poison/Dark now and has been great)
Donphan (they gave it Technician for strong bulldoze and ice shard)
Jumpluff (it has Aerilate and double-edge and is awesome)
Gligar
Dustox (still sucks, died instantly)

the level cap was one level away from getting my Medicham

they may have made Heatmor a beast this game

Fatal Precision - Super Effective Moves from this Pokemon cant miss and receive a 20% damage boost.

it's stats are way better (100 speed) and it gets Inferno, Dynamic Punch, Stone Edge, Power Whip

definitely gonna use one of these in the late game

Erika beated

Libero/Protean Cinderace is still broken. Galarian Rapidash being Fire/Fairy is cool. Gliscor and Jumpluff were also big contributors.

Now I have access to Saffron and can freely change to hidden abilities without having to use DexNav, so I'm going through all the Pokmon changes to see what else I want to use.

Much harder to script and add assets to, and there's a lot less modding tools available in comparison to Fire Red. If you look at stuff like Drayano's Gen 4 and 5 mods (which are probably the highest quality using those gens as bases), they pretty much just use what's already in the base game but rebalanced and with massive QoL changes, because there's not many great tools available. Compare that to Radical Red, which adds dynamax, every move and ability (and a few more), megas, every Pokemon... Most of that stuff just isn't available for Gen 4 and likely won't be for another few years.

Gotta prep some more but I know I'm using Copperajah, Slowbro, Incineroar, and Sirfetch'd

Zen Mode Darmanitan is permanent Zen in this, so I'm gonna have a fiery snowman on my team

Sabrina wasn't bad with that group.

Koga had permanent tailwind and psychic terrain so I had to use two different Unburden 'mons, but Copperajah was also great there.

Prepping for the elite four now. I'm going with this team: https://pokepast.es/0bf4c5f27523c3ac

Darmanitan-G: This thing just shreds. Base 130 speed and a tonne of strength.
Slowbro: They should have banned withdraw in hardcore mode. If I use the mega, I'm immune to crits. If I don't, I have regenerator.
Mimikyu: Wood Hammer was clutch in default mode. Disguise, priority, and fairy typing are all great.
Heracross: Hera's not awesome but I wanted to use either it or Sirfetch'd and I think it'll be better.
Donphan: Just having rapid spin seems to make opponents not use hazards. Donphan's been such an MVP - technician bonemerang is unreal. Sash endeavor + ice shard is cheap but it works.
Copperajah: If all this thing kills is geomancy Xerneas, it's a success.

This'll probably take quite a few tries but I think I've got something for everything.

(frame skip is my saviour and allows me to just treat this game like the boss rush it is)

Aww yeah. That took a lot of trial and error and a lot of deaths and a lot of Slowbro withdraws.

Highly recommend this game (with mandatory frameskip).

This sounds neat, I've been playing the beta of Emerald DX, which does a lot of what this does, including Fairy type, a few new mons that weren't in Emerald, and a graphical overhaul to add Gen 4-style sprites into the game. A few people still have placeholder sprites and there's some jank, but its been fun. I might try one of these next.

I beat hardcore mode with only normal types. I got to use a lot of 'mons I haven't used before.

They gave Swellow Aerilate and it's so strong with Specs Boomburst.
Zangoose's Toxic Boost makes it immune to poison damage here.
And Smeargle is a super cheap way of getting around that players can't learn hazards like sticky webs in hardcore mode. I'm sure they'll ban it in the next update and then I'd throw a scarf on a Heliolisk or something.

I think I'm done with the game for now but the three playthroughs were a lot of fun.
