Whew, first time getting to play anything in 2-3 weeks. Just doing mop-up duty with Kirby and the Forgotten Land trying to rescue all the Waddle Dees. I also finished the mission I left off on in Hitman 2. I'm consistently impressed with all the details and different ways to tackle missions in that game.

Made it to Georgia. Long trips with a one-month-old (as of today!) and a dog are tough!

Just reading the names on this list reminds me how much I hate the War of the Lions translation

I'm curious if people who like FFXIV's translation still dislike WotL's. Not sure if they're the same sorta thing or not.

I tried to find a script for XIV but apparantly there's an in-universe term called "scrips" so it's impossible.

I'm not a fan of both, and would throw e.g. Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler in as writing that attempt the same style and that very much aren't for me. That said, with the exception of the frankly bizarre choices with H'annit's localization, I haven't seem much beef thrown towards either of those games' texts. And obviously, FFXIV's writing is super popular. So yeah, it's probably nostalgia for the PS1 version that's fueling WotL's relative unpopularity.

Yeah, I think I'm in a small minority when it comes to the War of the Lions translation. I get it's not a sloppy mess like the original translation could be at times, but I'm just not a fan of the archaic purple prose style.

Like the primary example is the one user SaveEstelle used in that article. "Blame yourself or God!" is such a memorable line with a lot of punch to it. "Tis your birth or faith that wrong you, not I," is just too wordy to convey the same sentiment. Simple is preferable to needlessly verbose for me.

For the record, I've kind of had this issue with Final Fantasy in general since XII, where they started to make up unnecessarily fancy fantasy terminology for everything.

Though FF7R avoids this trend, so maybe Squeenix has finally shaken their love affair with it.

I started Triangle Strategy, and I've gotta say, having some of these character's profiles feature them with clearly sinister grins feels like visual spoilers!

It's oddly not? A bunch of the most evil looking characters are good guys. The artist just likes evil smiles I guess

The tutorial battle wasn't too bad. I wish there were some way to tell which conviction a choice strengthens. I guess I'll just make the choice I'd try to make myself and see where I end up!

You get that ability on New Game+, amusingly enough.

Yeah, NG+ lets you see under the hood for most of the conviction stuff.

Triangle Strategy Chapter 2 complete!

The battle was a struggle at first, but I eventually got the upper hand and emerged victorious on the first try. I don't have a great sense of the characters so far, but I do like Roland for sure.

I also thought it was funny that they didn't even let us pretend we had a chance of beating Maxwell in the tourney final, but they skipped straight to Serenoa regaining consciousness after getting whooped!

I had my first meeting over the Scales of Conviction, and now we're headed to Hyzante. Ironically enough, I had no conviction over which way to go, so I basically just used this as a chance to try to persuade everyone to change their minds.

Finally going to go see the new Doctor Strange tomorrow. Thankfully, I've managed to avoid spoilers up to this point.

It was kinda neat to see that his fighting skills have deteriorated instead of just having him instantly be uber powerful again.

Just finished watching Doctor Strange. Super trippy movie, but man, Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen are such great actors. They really carry it.

It was pretty obvious Hyzante wasn't all it was cracked up to be, but I was hoping it wouldn't just be the obviously evil oppressive empire. I guess there's still plenty of time to learn more and for things to change, but it wasn't a favorable first impression.

I went to Hyzante on my first run but in retrospect I think I prefer Aesfrost's chapter there. The character you get in Hyzante is way better gameplay-wise though IMO. Mage supremacy.

Yeah the ice mage is pretty good although I feel like he's gotten killed in every battle I've used him in so far!

I also unlocked character stories and got a couple of new recruits, including a mage who can use every element but specializes in wind. There's also a dude who can manipulate TP, but that honestly doesn't feel super valuable, at least early on. Maybe later when skills start costing more TP?

My brother-in-law's mom died yesterday, my stepdad's mom was killed in a hit and run today, and it looks like my wife's grandmother is going to pass away any day now.

When it rains it pours. I think there was a two month span that my friends father, cousin's husband, and my grandmother died like 10 years ago.

Yeah, she was on her way to my stepbrother's house for a Memorial Day get together. Not sure of the exact circumstances, but they had to use the jaws of life to get her out of the vehicle, so I'm guessing she got knocked off the road if the other car was able to drive away.
