i think people are too quick to use the word filler, and too perjorative when doing so - i haven't seen much of sailor moon, but monster/case-of-the-week stuff or breather scenes are often some of the best parts especially of tv shows. climaxes are more meaningful when i spend more time with characters getting to like them when they're in something of a status quo.

Oh, I don't think of filler as a negative most of the time (same with the term "fanservice"). I enjoy slice of life breather episodes where we get to know the characters better, and it really stands out in a show like Crystal that doesn't have any, where many of the characters suffer for it as a result.

yeah, i think this is notable in FMAB with hughes in the first half.

i think fanservice definitely doesn't have to be that negative - it has its time and place, and especially if the work is like a reboot or long-delayed sequel or has long withheld something from an adaptation or something. i do think it can get overdone if it's running a joke into the ground or it becomes too self-referential or it feels like it doesn't have anything interesting to say, but overall it can be a very positive thing.

but if it that fanservice is trying to titillate the audience with character's boobs or something, that's almost always negative to me.

FMAB cut content that was in the original manga. I don't think the Hughes stuff in FMA classic was filler. Of course, it's an improvement either way, since Hughes was a terrible character in both versions...

Some series are pretty great at adding filler to develop stuff more, but it's tough to balance, since it can hurt pacing a lot. 90% of the DBZ filler is for the worse, I think. For me, Sailor Moon Crystal suffered from being an ugly show rather than cutting content, I think. I only ended up watching half a dozen episodes before I dropped it.

The animation quality does have a noticeable uptick in the third season and in the movie, for what it's worth.

wait, there have been three seasons of sailor moon crystal?! i remember it seemed like a week ago that it was new and my fiancee was considering watching it

agreed that a lot of DBZ filler is bad, since a lot of it can contradict canon. the strict definition of "wasn't in the manga" of filler still often hits as a negative. though tbf DBZ is also so legendary that its filler/anime-adaptation has become somewhat canonized.

DBZ filler is the worst because it's in every episode.

Speaking of DBZ, I know we're almost done with the show itself, but there are several movies. Are any of them worth watching?

Battle of Gods and Resurrection F are kind of sequels to it, and are solid, particularly the first. Not sure about the older movies.

None of the older movies are necessary watching, but most of them are okay. Battle of Gods and Resurrection F are good, but they also do a retelling of both are arcs in Dragon Ball Super, so if you plan on continuing there, you can potentially skip those as well (there are some minor plot differences between the movies and anime, but they're close enough).

I'm not sure we'll go right into Super since I've been watching Dragon Ball for like the last three years!

Even though they have the Z name they become the basis for Super so I wouldn't really count those.

Not really a fan of any of the movies myself anyway

Most people do consider the Super versions to be worse, from what I've heard.

The movies are definitely better animated, and I'd say overall they're better, but I'm not sure it's to the degree where it's worth watching twice.

yeah, the old DBZ movies aren't canon but i thought 1-3 were enjoyable enough when i watched them decades ago. don't remember much about 4 but i know that's one of the more disliked ones. never tried watching the other movies.

Started TWEWY 2 and got through the first two days. Not totally sure I'm sold on this combat system, at first I thought you could only use one pin at a time and in a weird way I think I may have preferred that. Too much for my dumb mind to keep track of!

you missed the wonderful era where the Big Ten had 12 teams and the Big XII had 10 teams overlapped one another.

Yeah, the numbers in conferences don't mean anything anymore.

Also TWEWY2's battle system takes some getting used to, but once you learn how to pair attacks together, it's pretty fun.

I also thought TWEWY2's battle system took some getting used to, though in fairness I also felt the same way about the first game.

What a weird ending. So I know Super is a sequel (pre-final timeskip), but what's the deal with GT? I don't know anything about it.

Stranger Things Season 1 Episode 7 complete!

R.I.P. Barbara and the van. Also, I think at this point, Dustin and Hopper are my favorite characters.

Dustin definitely the best member of the party.

There's the Tenshinhan tournament and the Jackie Chun tournament

Also GT actually takes place after the final timeskip. The premise is that pilaf wants revenge on goku, bumbles his way into making a wish that Goku turns into a kid again, and then new kid Goku goes on an adventure with Trunks and pan, the daughter of gohan and videl. There's an arc where android 17 returns as a villain.

The tournaments in general were awesome. I was kinda sad DBZ didn't really take them seriously.

This Is Us Season 5 Episode 1 complete!

It's kinda surreal to see them transition right into dealing with Covid with the opening of this season.

(GT is also non-canon. it was an anime made after the popularity of DBZ. super is "recent" - ended its run in 2018)

If you missed kid Goku then GT is alright. I've watched it and enjoyed it for most, but I'm probably never going to again.

If you like tournaments, youll probably enjoy Super.

It has one moderate length tournament arc and one long tournament arc, I believe. Together, they take up about half the show.

So I started playing Batman: Arkham Asylum. Pretty good so far, but I'm still in the opening part of the game. Just got access to the Riddler's riddles. I don't know how linear this game is and if I'll be able to come back to get stuff I missed, so I'm not sure if I need to solve the riddles immediately when I'm in the right room or if it can wait.

I believe it has unlimited backtracking. I've seen people call it a Metroidvania.

This is true. No collectibles are missable. Some trophies are IIRC, but that's different.

This does not make me look forward to my son's teenage years.

Got through the Scarecrow fight (if it can be called that) in Arkham Asylum. I enjoyed the psychological aspect of that part of the game.

Just beat Bane, too (cool ending there with Batman mowing him down with the Batmobile), and I found the Riddler's map, which will come in handy. And of course, Batman built a secret Batcave just in case he needed it.

Can't wait for the one piece watchthrough
