This year, same as every other year: Fuck the Bruins.

(thankfully Carolina's underway on that front)

Remember the old prediction challenge of assigning 8 through 1 points on what series winner you were most to least confident in? I put this together last night:

Colorado +8
Florida +7
Calgary +6
Carolina +5
Edmonton +4
NY Rangers +3
Minnesota +2
Toronto +1

....I know it's just one game and I didn't watch it, but looking at that Toronto/Tampa Bay boxscore, damn...

Well we went with all top seeds... which is something we should really avoid trying to do, but damn they all felt so good. Maybe St. Louis but I just don't trust Husso to get it done in that matchup... Boston/Nashville/Pittsburgh goalie situations make them feel like gimmes, and those powerhouse teams at the top just feel so strong, how can you pick against them?

Haven't looked at any commentator predictions yet, I wonder what the upset consensus would be (if there is one out there)

Yeah for all my talk about goalies I don't trust to get it done, I glossed over Mike Smith entirely. Though he had a return to incredible form recently so maybe I was hoping that'd extend a bit longer, or just the raw offensive output would be enough to power through weak goaltending (ditto for Florida, evidently)

well, Fuck the Bruins, so I'll take that.

But Raanta got injured apparently? So guess it's a question of how badly, at least they still won...

Campbell and Husso reverting to their expected form after Game 1 shutouts so all is right with the world, question now is whether Mike Smith also has a polarity flip or resumes being the same bad Mike Smith. 7 of his 8 games prior to Game 1 were 2 or fewer goals, can he regain that...

Mike Smith did have a miracle turnaround yesterday, and Oettinger joining the shutout crew today, nice.

Only teams up 2-0 being Colorado and Carolina, not too surprising but figured there'd be more (last year had four 2-0 leads and ended up with two sweeps)

Also interesting, following up on my "polarity switch" post the other day, being that 5 of the 6 series tied 1-1 (Calgary/Dallas sole exception) had winning teams scoring 4 or more goals in their respective games. Like not even 2-1 or 3-1 or 3-2 losses, just big goals one day, big blowout the next. Well I think that's remarkable - and makes things interesting insofar as whether the Jekyll or Hyde goalie versions show up in Game 3!

"Winners getting 4 or more goals and losers don't" streak continues, though the 2 empty-netters in the Toronto/TBay game makes that feel less genuine.

Toronto takes a series lead and what do you see on Twitter - "Tavares" trending, complaining about his performance thus far. Never good enough (though he isn't really earning that 11 million so fair enough I guess...)

Will Binnington return to his post (and also allow 4+ goals) in Game 4 or are they just going to ride Husso through the series loss?

Games starting at 1, 430, 7 and 930 EDT today? If Florida/Washington goes to 2OT, that's an almost uninterrupted streak of hockey, nice...

Storylines for today:

-Hurribros, I don't feel so good... (or: when are Raanta and/or Andersen back?) (EDIT: oh god I saw the boxscore and just assumed it was Kochetkov again but it was really Raanta. Uh... maybe we chalk that up to rust or something, oh geez. Fuck the Bruins!!!)

-Binnington's in as Blues starter, I was thinking that per above post but didn't officially predict that I guess. Is there a possible postseason revival for him (currently 3-1 Blues after 2) or will we see the Blues regular season goalie pattern continue in the postseason (1 good game, 2 shit games)?

-If Toronto wins, they're up 3-1 and will be prompting talk about last year's 3-1 series collapse (vs. eventual finalists Habs). Though better 3-1 than 2-2...

-The over/under on Oilers/Kings is 6.5. The only game in the series so far that was "under" is when Edmonton won 6-0. Are you a bad enough dude to NOT bet on the "over" there???

Last year, only 2 of the 8 first-round series were tied 2-2 after four games. After Sunday night's games, we're at 4/4 with Rangers, Panthers or Flames wins tonight (all higher seeds and alleged favourites, though on the road) possibly adding to that tally. Colorado the only one up 3-0 so no chance.

only two Game 7s in first round last year so also like our chances of exceeding that this go-around. But then again, considering my commentary on Edmonton over/unders and the actual result last night, well, probably a good thing I don't bet on sports...

Crescent-Moon posted...

Yeah definitely don't want the Tampa Bay three-peat, but Florida's removed any fear I've had for them based on their performance thus far, and with Carolina's issues in the other division, definitely like the chances more than before that the Toronto/Tampa winner to be the East's representative in the finals...

A Toronto cup win might actually force the city to clean up Yonge Street for the parade so that's just a side benefit for Torontonians.

While I generally agree with that, you can only blame the "opening season road trip" so much, they were around .500 post-All-Star break too anyways.

Still, considering the past few years you figured they'd give him more leeway. Though I won't feel too bad for him as I'm sure another team will snatch him up fast. Flyers and Wings have vacancies per wikipedia, plus there are some interims he could replace?

I just remembered them scoring like 6 goals a game in the regular season, Ovechkin was injured and the Caps goaltending has been hit or miss. They went all-in on the playoff run for this season so I wanted to believe in them...!

Ah, the draft lottery happened and I forgot to post about it.

Habs 1st (thankfully), Devil jumps from 5th to 2nd, Coyotes drop to 3rd.

Could Devils improve enough to compete for a playoff spot next year, powered by their improving youth corps + 2nd pick, everyone staying healthy and goaltending marginally improving? Or... will they be continuing their and the Sabres trend, and the Oilers trend of yore (high draft picks not fundamentally changing anything)?
