am i missing out badly?

One of my favorite games of all time. In my opinion, it deserves all of the praise it gets.

That said though, a remaster is currently in development, so, for a first time player, it might be worth waiting for that. There's definitely some things about the game that could use some modernization.

The remake isn't happening for a long time, and it's likely gonna be a completely different experience from the original anyway. No reason not to give it a try.

Both games (1 and 2) are great games - 2 does kinda need the restoration mod to actually make it a finished game though, but are quite dated in gameplay.

One is a pretty basic/simple story, while 2 delves into things a lot more and is much more interesting imo.

Play the two games and then ignore every bit of related media that came after because holy fuck EA/Bioware absolutely shat all over the story just so they could cash in nostalgia points for the TOR MMO.

TC is a Hutt in human form plotting to overthrow the Republic.

Only seen the movies. I like episode 1-6, the newer eps were kinda weird

The game shows its age, but it still holds up remarkably well.

The gameplay is based on 3rd Edition DnD rules, so you'll have your standard DnD stats. Which also means that your attacks are hidden dice rolls. If that's not your cup of tea, then I'd suggest watching a play through at least.

The story is worth experiencing at the very least.

We know absolutely nothing about the remake.

That said, I am willing to say with absolute certainty that it's going to have very little resemblance to the original. Every character is going to be rewritten; the plot will likely be quite different. The gameplay will absolutely be completely unrecognizable.

Whether it will be better or worse, no one can say. I will say that I don't exactly trust many writers in the industry to successfully recapture the magic; hell, I wouldn't even trust the original writers to recapture the magic.

Short version is, the experiences will be totally different. So there's no reason to skip the classic version. It's a masterpiece and holds up just fine, except maybe graphically.

Played it for the first time myself last year. It's not bad, but unless you are a strong fan of older CRPG games, it's not brilliant. Your seasoned jedi misses a lot, moral choices are either "follow the story" or "be a raging sociopath", turret mini game is intolerable, and the conversation feels less natural and more exposition dump, leading to something that doesn't feel great to watch if you've had it spoiled.

Don't go in expecting a masterpiece and it's still fun though.

It's good. The combat is "auto attack based on stats, with other activated moves", a bit like an MMO without area of effect stuff or cooldowns, in terms of how you interact with it moment to moment.

I honestly ain't sure what people mean when they say it's dated. The combat and stats are a bit "huh" at first, but only in the way nearly any RPG of that type is. Modern CRPGs aren't any more user friendly or anything. The graphics are obviously of the time, but I think it still looks decent. It's not like those older games where you're like "oh wow how did anyone put up with this it looks so silly".

Yeah they're both great. Though I'd call Kotor 2 less of a sequel, and more akin to a "Majora's Mask" or "New Vegas" rather than an actual sequel.

I started my fiance on Kotor a few weeks ago and she's really enjoying it.

There is a great Kotor 3 as well called Dragon Age Origins

the first game from a gameplay perspective is very solid, its basically Neverwinter Nights with a more cinematic camera angle. but its story is childishly simplistic and maybe one of the most bare bones things bioware has ever written outside of the pack in campaign of NWN

The second game has a much better story but its an obsidian game from the early 2000s so its full of cut content, bugs and missed opportunities

It really doesn't look bad. Just early 2000s. I dig Xbox games from that era, good art. It's not one of the best but it's not bad either.
