I have a save from 2019 where I was trying to beat some boss, and I'm like 10 levels under the boss' level and even random encounters wipe my party. No idea how I got into that game state but was reminded at how horrible I am at action games and how I shouldn't play them.

I'm a slave to action games

Vesperia is easy if you just spam Destruction Field.

Vesperia combat system feels weird at first, watch this vid. Technically it tells you everything in the tutorial books that you can read using the menu but a vid is better:

You should be.

... Just turn the difficulty down. Tales of games have difficulty settings; you can scale it to your skill level as you improve.

I was playing on normal.
I've beat every mothership Tales game except for Vesperia, Xillia, Xillia 2 and Arise...
Hell I've beat some of them on the highest difficulty.

I believe you, but it can take a bit of time to get back into the groove of a game you haven't played for a while. Vesperia has some very strange difficulty spikes, too, which come near out of nowhere. I've beaten almost every Tales of except for... Hmm, it's just Destiny 2 and Rebirth from the main titles at this point, wow... the difficulty settings are there for a reason, and it's not to insult your pride. It's for you to scale up as you refine your inputs, whether you're a first-timer or a returning player.

I am actually still relatively early in the game. The boss that I was stuck on was Belius. Maybe I'll try later but I think I'm a good 5-10 levels under where I should be.

Oh that wasn't advice. Honestly, I don't remember how I got better at the game, but I think really having a bread and butter combo is all you need. Also keep in mind that you can control what your teammates do and set their actions. Like if you still have Estelle, for now you can have her concentrate on ONLY healing and only use good healing so she doesn't get herself killed. And keeps you topped off. And if you're horrible at actually defending and timing your attacks, you can play as Rita and run away and spam spells.

You're choosing to stop playing the game because you don't want to turn the difficulty down.

If ya beat Berseria then this should be super easy

The Belius fight (most important boss fights too) has a gimmick called a secret mission, make sure you're taking care of that asap. Use Yuri's Destruction Field or Rita's Fireball to light all the torches around the arena while all the other characters keep the boss and clones busy.

I've never played one of these myself but I see Berseria and Vesperia are super cheap on the current sale.

Are the stories/characters between the two connected or are they two completely separate deals within the same franchise (a la Final Fantasu and Dragon Quest)?

Most Tales games are completely stand alone. These two have no connection.

Zestiria takes place 1000-ish years after Berseria and has like 3 whole characters shared between the two games.

Probably? I only reinstalled it because my friend was playing it.
I will probably get some new game this week and totally ignore it for another 4-5 years.

good to know. I finished Zesteria with just under 100 hours on it.... I liked the battle system, but the story.... too predictable.

really enjoying the Berseria story, i think the characters are better (magilou is hilarious some good writing there).

Zesteria has absolutely nothing to do with Vesperia. It's also the worst game in the franchise that I played.
