Inspired by Johnbobb's topic https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/79949761

As the title says, what are some games that you like despite not liking the actual gameplay itself?

For me, Rule of Rose is probably up there. The atmosphere, story, graphics (for its time) really made the experience.

I wouldn't say I disliked the gameplay but it took me a long time to get adjusted to Bloodborne's style of gameplay (and there are certain issues I have with pretty much all the Souls games I've played) but it's still one of my favorites for the incredible aesthetic and world-building

Combat in the Witcher 3 kinda sucks but everything else about the game is pretty good.

Also the same issue for the recent Guardians of the Galaxy game.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

I like everything except the gameplay. Has a ton of good modes, the best soundtrack in the series, some good original features, and great moddability. And it had a fun atmosphere back when it was the active game.

I think Tales of Rebirth is the best pick for me

It's one of my favourite Tales games, in a franchise that I typically love for its gameplay.... but I ultimately hated the 3-rails battle system in Rebirth. It was frustrating because the gameplay had elements I liked to it like the rush gauge which was neat letting you dynamically adjust mid-fight to be more powerful or more defensive but god damn 3 rails and often a lot of enemies just meant for a lot of frustration overall.

I think of my top favorite games, the one with the least exciting gameplay would be Pyre.

I mean, it's not the worst and can have some fun moments, but the story, music and characters are really what I care about.

Xenogears comes to mind. I thought the dungeons and combat system were trash in that game but the things it tries to do are so interesting that I end up still having a positive opinion on it

Spiritfarer's sailing and daycare mechanics bored me to tears but some of the dialog is really powerful.

Night in the Woods was an overall positive experience despite what passes for gameplay being a waste of time.

It's hard to think of too many examples for me too. I have trouble toughing it out with bad gameplay to get to other interesting parts, and will usually stop playing these types of games early on. Chrono Cross is an example of a game like that for me. Even Spiritfarer I still have yet to finish because I get so tired of actually playing it.

Probably countless very obscure story-based indie games which I don't recall the names of. I also second Danganronpa, Phoenix Wright and Witcher 3, although I think using what are basically souped up VNs is kinda cheating.

Does the Stanley Parable count? I feel like it's in the same boat as VNs where the story is the gameplay.

NieR Reincarnation.
Gorgeous art, gorgeous music, intriguing story... and like most 'free' games, a core gameplay mechanic that is somehow both incredibly simplistic and needlessly overcomplicated, requiring next to no skill or strategy beyond "grind for the dozens of different materials and currencies necessary to upgrade everything to the required level".

The obvious answers are usually older JRPGs that you didn't play until they were 10 y/o or older. Such games have mechanics that tend not to age well, which is why having a good story is the most important thing in the genre. I continue playing them so long as I'm enjoying the story, unless I find the gameplay so bad or dated that I just can't.

For example, Persona 3 has a lot of issues with its battle system, such as a hugely imbalanced party, no ability to control your allies, and the early effects of the fatigue system. That does not change that the main narrative is fantastic (though almost all of the S-Links kinda suck). Much of this was rectified in Portable, thankfully.

I played Suikoden V recently and the game was pretty good despite me finding the battle system exhausting and slow. Suikoden II had quick battles that felt less tiring. Still like V quite a bit.

Those were the two examples that came to mind. I do enjoy the Ace Attorney logic mechanics for the most part, even if there are some instances where there should be multiple paths to the same conclusions. The story there is the best part. I plan to play Danganronpa later this year!

Even though I really care more about things like "story" or "atmosphere" or whatever, if I actively dislike the gameplay it usually means I can't finish the game. There's plenty of my favorite games where I'd say the gameplay is only okay or fine, but none where I'd say I don't like the gameplay.

I guess my answer would be Disgaea which was an incredibly cool game, but like yeah I couldn't actually play it for more than 10 hours.

I'd hesitate to say I don't like Minecraft's gameplay (it's a weird situation for me), but as I am distinctly not creative, it tends to bore me quite quickly without mods turning it into a totally different game.

Portal, kinda. I don't mind the puzzles at all but they aren't the draw.

Contact (DS) is probably a purer example, that game's gameplay is mediocre at best but I love the writing and almost everything else about it.

Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon (Wii) is a gorgeous game in almost all respects, but the combat is pretty clunky and unfun.

...I skimmed through a list of all the games I've beaten and those are the only 3 that stand out to me. Usually I don't like games with bad gameplay!

I can really only think of games where gameplay is a kind of non-factor. Gameplay VNs are kind of expected to be this. RPGs I expect better. Nier is certainly less than great gameplay while being a great game.
I actually beat Disgaea (PC) for the first tine recently and thought the gameplay was a blast, although the port is pretty crap and I had some issues even with comprehensive mods to fix it.
