To be clear, Russia is a threat to the US sovereignty. But this invasion could shape up to be a catalyst for an even bigger war, a currency war, depending on how these sanctions play out. I fear a number of countries will come out of the woodwork to take advantage of the opportunity.

Again, you have to look at who in Ukraine were pushing for joining the NATO alliance versus those who were friendly with Russia. Ukraine is not a monolith and the story becomes a lot more interesting when you touch on these aspects. I'd want to discuss this more, but it's not in my favor to do so. But I promise you (lurkers reading this), the situation didn't pop out out of the blue.
