Okay, I post this every time the playoffs roll around, but I'm here to tell you who the SB contenders are this postseason based on historical data. I don't tell people ad nauseum that the best path to success is defense and the running game for nothing. Of the previous 30 teams to make the SB, 29 have finished in the top half of the league in running offense while 28/30 have finished in the Top 10 on defense. The exceptions were the inaugural season Dolphins (19th on D), S13's Pioneers (11th on D), S14's Pioneers (18th in rushing), and S15's Vikings (11th on D). Without further ado, your SB representatives are likely to come from this pool: Dolphins Express 49ers While fixtures in the Top 10 on D for most of the season, the Ravens and Patriots finished just outside. The Steelers also had the rushing but finished a little more outside on defense. The Rams, Washington, and Orcas, thanks to injuries and inconsistency, ultimately finished in the bottom half in rushing, but the Orcas were close at 18th. The Pioneers had issues running the ball (24th) and finished around league average on D (17th) The Bears and Lions were deeply flawed in both categories (Bears 29th in rushing and 32nd on defense, Lions (20th in rushing, 26th on defense). --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... KCF's Playoff Power Rankings 1. Portland Express 2. Miami Dolphins 3. St. Louis Rams 4. San Juan Orcas 5. Baltimore Ravens 6. New England Patriots 7. Columbus Pioneers 8. Washington 9. Pittsburgh Steelers 10. San Francisco 49ers 11. Chicago Bears 12. Detroit Lions The Express had the league's top defense, both in terms of yardage and points. They used three different starting HBs, and all three have been great. If they get back HB DeMarco Murray and LG Rodney Hudson by the time their first playoff game kicks off in the divisional round, they will hands down be the most complete team in field. The path to the Super Bowl in the AFC is far more difficult than in the NFC, but you have to like the Express' chances against anyone. The Dolphins do pose the biggest challenge to Portland though. They are 10-2 with Sam Keller starting for them, and while they've had their fair share of injuries on both sides of the ball with +3 starters out for most of the season, they finished in the Top 5 on both offense and defense. They are without two of the best defenders in the game in CB Joe Haden and MLB Jordan Tripp, and if Tripp doesn't play in the Divisional Round, that could be trouble for the young and inexperienced front seven if they end up having to play the Patriots, whom Miami has lost to twice this season. Still, they have enough healthy star power to where a fourth Super Bowl title is a real possibility. The Rams remain one of the best defensive teams in the league, but they have really missed WR Patrick Turner as they back into the playoffs with a four-game losing streak. It helps that the NFC field is pretty weak this year, but if they are to vanquish their inner demons and play in the Super Bowl, they will need one of their HBs to step up and provide average efficiency as a team YPC of under 3.5 will not cut it. The Orcas have really ascended defensively under the current leadership as they finished the season 4th on D. The scary thing for the rest of the league is that we just don't know how their offense will fare because they have never been healthy all season, with 2+ starters not suiting up for all but the final game of the season. They still managed to finish 16th despite all the injuries to their best skill position players and after having to replace two Hall of Famers in the offseason. HB Knowshon Moreno has been good when healthy, but he hit the injury report for the third time this season, and it is unknown at this point if he will play in the divisional round. The Orcas won't have to face the Rams at that point, so they should be the clear favorites regardless over the other four, but anything can happen. The Baltimore Ravens ultimately tumbled out of the Top 10 in both offense and defense, but they finished 11th and 12th respectively in those categories, so still very good. They cleaned up their turnover differential that was shockingly abysmal last year. Superstar HB Doug Martin had another outstanding year playing in all 16 games again. That being said, this team feels a little vulnerable with all the mounting injuries and QB Kirby Freeman turning in his worst full season in the league. They are talented and perform well enough to where a deep playoff run is certainly possible, but so is a one-and-done. The Patriots had several opportunities to secure home field through the playoffs but ultimately blew it and will go on the road to face a team with a losing record. They lost the last time this scenario played out. If they can avoid embarrassment, they could be a sneaky Super Bowl pick despite how much they have clearly overachieved this season with Sam Fucking Bradford at the helm. They are 3-0 against the Dolphins and Express this season, so I have to feel inclined that they could have what it takes. Unless the Steelers stun everyone, they will have to win three road games en route to the Super Bowl though, which is the main reason why I put them below the Ravens. Yes, I am putting the 7-9 Pioneers 6th. This is not the Pioneers from most of the season where 3/4 of their starting LBs kept rotating injuries. This D really righted the ship once people got healthy. They ultimately finished below average, but if were were to just take into account the final third of the season, they might have had a Top 5 D. Ryan Lindley has been an excellent fill-in for the injured Russell Wilson, and Markus Manson was hot in the final stretch and had his best season with Columbus since he was an MVP finalist in S13. They are much better than their record indicates. That too applies to Washington who had a Top 5 offense even with all the injuries, including two QBs who had 0 career snaps heading into the season, and a defense that finished in the top half. If there's anything that I'm worried about, it's the running game where current starer Ryan Williams has as many fumbles as TDs. They face a defensive-oriented team in the 49ers, so they have a tough test using backups at several key offensive positions. Because the NFC is so weak and the clear two best teams have injury concerns, Washington might be the best dark horse candidate in the field. Still, this ranking feels right. The Steelers are pretty much fine on both sides of the ball. They are adequate on offense with a productive but roughly average efficieny running attack, a safe but vanilla passing attack, and a balanced and moderately effect defense. They basically need their opponents to make mistakes, and they got nine wins this season in part of their +10 turnover differential, but that be in part of their schedule because they beat up on the bad and mediocre teams and went 1-4 against those in the playoffs. After being subjected to such a bad passing offense with Christian Hackenberg, the 49ers turned to the disgruntled Mitchell Trubisky in possibly his final season in the bay and were rewarded with two wins and five passing TDs from Mitch. Their defense ended up in the Top 10, so it would seem that they were on the upswing, but then HB Thomas Rawls was lost for the year. This is not a team built to win through the air, so perhaps more than any other team, a late-season injury has significantly reduced their Super Bowl chances. Their path for victories will now have to be led by the defense, which is certainly feasible with this NFC playoff field, but it will still be mighty difficult. The Bears are not built for playoff success. They have the lowest-ranked defense to ever make the playoffs by finishing dead last in the league, and I would imagine that their 29th ranked running attack is also the worst to make it into the playoffs. Their best defensive player is also done for the season. Luckily for them, they face my 12th ranked team in the wild card round, but it would be a major suprise to see them two rounds from now. The Lions are not ranked as poorly as the Bears, but the 20th ranked running attack and 26th ranked defense are hardly something to be proud of. The Bears were tied for 3rd with a +8 turnover differential to help explain their record, but the Lions are -2. QB Jared Goff has been playing well and HB Alex Collins had 225 yards, which maybe bodes well as they face the 31st ranked rushing D in Chicago, but I don't know, there just isn't a lot to like here. At least they are the healthiest that they've been all season. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Copied to Clipboard!

As for the poll, none of the options are currently finalists by Madden's standards, but that could change once I go through them and pick out my own candidates. With that said, two other "prominent" free agent acquisitions are Madden finalists in a category. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Copied to Clipboard!

End-of-Season Season Awards The following posts will contain all the awards that will be given out this season. While participation is optional, I would really appreciate it if you would take the 15 minutes or so out of your life to pick out your choices for each category and submit them to me via PM before the deadline. Most of the awards are from the game itself. There are a few that are entirely of my creation. The former awards will have both a User and Madden winner while the later will solely have a User winner. The nominees for awards from the game will mostly come from the game itself with a few categories I will do from scratch. To prevent spoilers, I reorder the nominees by team name, first name, or last name every year (except Breakout/Comeback is by positional order and GM is always by name). This year, I chose last name. For each category, you choose the one player/coach/person you believe to be most worthy of the award. For the Offensive Player, Defensive Player, and MVP of the Year, awards, you do not have to vote for the any of the listed players. If you feel another player up for another award is applicable and more worthy for one of these awards, you may select them as a write-in candidate even though you should know they won't win. However, I will use my discretion to null a write-in vote if I feel it to be disingenuous. The deadline to submit to me your award ballot will be Saturday, May 14th at 5 PM ET. The award show should take place later that night on Discord while the playoffs will be simmed the following night. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Breakout Player of the Year Jets HB Joe Mixon Injured and playing behind the veteran Selvin Young his rookie season, Mixon produced a couple hundred yards and a pair of TDs in 10 games and 2 starts. With HBs notoriously slow to develop into efficient and effective ones, it appeared as if the Jets were going to have to be patient to see if their former #8 overall pick was the long-term answer. Instead they found out in just his second season as he finished 8th in the league in rushing (1589 yards), 8th in rushing YPC (4.2 YPC), and led all players with 15 offensive TDs as led a Jets offense en route to an 8-8 season in spite of QB Deshaun Watson's ghastly 55.8 passer rating. Bengals WR Josh Briscoe A tantelizing talent who was originally brought up to be the slot receiver when the Bears were in Richmond and had Javon Walker and Jerry Porter manning the starting jobs, he ended up starting 91 games with the Bears franchise. Due to injuries and lackluster QB play though, he never stood out statistically. His best season was last season when he had 60 rec, 725 yards, and 6 TDs in 13 games. After being traded to the Bengals on an offense featuring three other new starters themselves, the 33-year-old Briscoe found himself a nice home to end his career with as he set personal highs with 79 receptions, 1003 yards, and 8 TDs as he played in all 16 games and helped lead the Bengals to the #1 offense in the league. Buccaneers RG Arie Kouandjio A former 5th round pick by the Cowboys in S11, he played only six games in relief in his three seasons with Dallas before spending the following two as a free agent. When the Bucs decided to purge most of their underperforming and overpaid interior OL, they went bargain hunting to fill the holes. A trio of sub-80 Gs were in battle for the RG spot, but Kouandjio won, and boy did he deserve it. He put in a spectacular 63 blocks vs 6 sacks allowed, an almost unheard of ratio for an interior OL of his caliber, as helped the Buccaneers soar to 3rd in the league in rushing and compete for a playoff spot until almost the end of season after the team had been one of the league's worst the previous two seasons. Broncos MLB Ben Heeney Like Mixon, Heeney was a first round pick last season, but on a defense that has largely been led by the DL and secondary, he didn't stand out much in spite of being a Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate. He made a massive leap in year two as he doubled his tackle (66 to 135), sack (3 to 8), INT (2 to 4), and increased his FF+FR total from 3 to 5 as he put the defense on his back en route to a sizzling hot final third of the season for the Broncos as they cut their defensive ranking by more than half (27th to 13th). Falcons RE Frank Clark Our third first round pick from last season, Clark had the the most invisible rookie season of the three with just 8 tackles in 16 games and a start. He was part of the Falcons draft class last season where the team punted the S16 draft and pinned their hopes on the likes of Clark and others. It was a disaster of a season, putting the pressure on players like Clark to take big steps forward, and did he ever. The DL and Defensive Player of the Year candidate produced 37 tackles, 12 sacks (tied for 9th in league), 4 FFs (tied for 2nd), and a FR as the Falcons went from 5 to 9 wins and just barely missing out on the playoffs. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Comeback Player of the Year Buccaneers QB Bobby Reid Drafted 9th overall way back in S5 by the Rams to be Jake Delhomme's eventual successor. He got his shot in S7 and was promising only for the Rams to then select Ryan Tannehill in S7 2nd overall. It ended up being the right move for St. Louis, but Reid's future was murky. He spent some time as a free agent, signed a multi-year deal with the Titans, elevated them to their best offensive ranking up to that point but was let go when new management took over. Spending more years as a free agent, he latched onto the Steelers and was absymal there. He signed a multi-year deal with the Buccaneers expecting to finish his career there backing up #1 overall pick Trevor Largent. Reid shockingly won the preseason battle in both Largent and his second year in Tampa, and the veteran scrambler once again elevated the offense to heights that that they haven't seen since the Tom Brady days (yes Tom Brady spent most of his B8NFLL career as a Buc) as he had a career high 80.5 passer rating and nearly a 3:1 TD:INT ratio and chipped in 672 yards on the ground. Bears WR Willie Snead After a promising third season that saw Snead produce 828 yards and 7 TDs, the former 1st rounder by the club had S15 fourth season totally wiped out after they traded two firsts for QB Teddy Bridgewater. With the two playing together for the first time, their connections was excellent as Snead tied for the league lead in receptions (92) and TD receptions (11) and was third in receiving yards (1109) as both he and Bridgewater are up for awards and the Bears are in the playoffs for the first time in B8NFLL history. Bills LT Garret Bolles The Bills used the 8th overall pick on Bolles in the S13 draft, and while his career ratio of 32 blocks against 1 sack entering the season showed he was worthy of his draft spot, he was just always injured. He lost his entire rookie season, lost 10 games in his second, and played just three as a backup in his third. After Buffalo let Alex Barron walk as a free agent after 15 seasons with the team, Bolles was given another opportunity to seize a future as a starter for the Bills, and he took advantage of it. Starting in 15 games, he produced 61 blocks against 5 sacks allowed as he helped the Bills to be within one game of a playoff spot. Washington ROLB Shaq Thompson Coming off of consecutive playoff appearances in S13 and S14, Thompson was expected to be one of the focal points of Washington's defense in S15, but he was out for the season before it even began as the defense and team crumbled. Back for S16, he set career highs in tackles (118 vs 81 previous best), sacks (7 vs 5), and FRs (5 vs 2) while chipping in 2 INTs and a FF and more importantly an incredible three defensive TDs as he helped the defense rebound to just outside of the Top 10 and dethroning the Cowboys as NFC East champs in spite of an injury-riddled offense being led by QBs with no prior regular season experience and a 32-year-old unknown HB that had eclipsed 100 yards only once in the previous five seasons. Seahawks LE Brick Massey In his first season with the Seahawks as a big free agent prize, the pass-rushing specialist Massey gave them 5 tackles and 3 sacks in 16 starts. He seriously made one play every two games. How is that even possible? Season two went a lot better for him and the defense as he had 30 tackles, 12 sacks and a pair of FFs+FRs as he helped the Seahawks D rise to the top half of the league for the first time since maybe the Carson Palmer era (that was a long time ago since this is Kirk Cousin's 7th year as a starter for them). --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... General Manager of the Year Jukkie + Led the Patriots to a 10-6 record and their first playoff appearance since S13 + Drafted CB Shaquill Griffin, ROLB Deion Jones, and MLB Benjamin Adams who were all great in their first seasons - Failed to make necessary adjustments as injuries piled up toward the end and a 2-4 finish resulted in them going from the 1st to 5th seed KCF + Led the Orcas to a franchise-best record and first playoff bye/conference #1 seed + Despite having no draft picks before the sixth round, losing two Hall of Famers, and saw 2+ starters out for 15 of their 16 games, their offseason additions and in-season adjustments helped them to finish in the top half on offense, 4th on defense, and 2nd in points allowed - Signed QB Marcus Mariota to a 6 year deal as a free agent only for him to provide a 72.3 passer rating and a 57% completion% in year one MysteriousStan + Led Bears to franchise-best record and first playoff appearance + Drafted Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate SS Nate Warfield in the 6th - The team did not perform well being dead last on defense, 29th in rushing offense, and 19th overall on offense ShatteredElysium + Made playoffs for first time since S11 + Signed QB Mike Glennon and traded for WR Philly Brown who proved to be good fits their first season, with the former up for QB of the Year - Steelers' rankings in most critical areas were pretty average despite having the league's third easiest schedule and went 1-4 against playoff teams ViolentAbacus + Despite knowing very little about football, they led the Jets to their first non-losing season since S11 + I shook my head at their free agent signings, but players like LT Rob Havenstein (52 blocks vs 4 sacks), RG Clint Boling (59 blocks vs 8 sacks), and DT Jonathan Hankins (7 sacks and 1 FF as a part-time starter) had their best seasons in the league, proving to be good moves this season. - Did not make the playoffs --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... whatever criteria you want but I'm pretty certain most people just go on the stats that are presented. It's up to you how to value them. For example, some people might value 2 INTs and 3 FF for a LB differently than 3 INTs and 2 FF. Some positions like OLine it's pretty cut and dry but for defense, it's all what you value most. If you think a dude making 50 more tackles compared to someone who got 2 more INTs and FFs than them is more valuable, then go for it --- I'm a greener egg than the eggs from dr. seuss ... Even when I'm supposed to play the Express, Madden overrules it and puts me against the Dolphins in the divisional instead (not that I'd have beat the Express either). 3-0 in playoffs versus non Dolphins teams (Ravens twice, Patriots) 0-4 in playoffs versus Dolphins (3 divisional, 1 WC round as home team) Hopefully the gap between AI and users shrinks again next year so we don't end up with another all AI final (first time champion though at least!). Seems to be the direction the league is trending in at at least. I'm more hopeful of being a good team next season than I have been in quite a lot of years. ... Copied to Clipboard!
