News seems very positive for Ukraine overnight. They still hold all major cities and Turkey is reportedly closing the straits to Russian warships. Russia claiming they halted their advance for a while to pursue negotiations but are resuming now that Ukraine refused to negotiate. That may mean they were repulsed and are trying to explain why they haven't won yet. Hard to tell if that's true but Russia has no credibility at this point.

Still waiting for the pandemic's effect on this war or vice versa.

It's not even a take. It's literally someone incapable of NOT speaking. He has nothing to add to the conversation, and can't just sit back and read, or even offer some sort of point. It's just saying words to make it known you exist and are aware of events occurring.

To be clear: although there was a coup in 2014, since there have been two free and fair elections, and in the last one the government changed. It is not the same regime despite what some misinformation and propaganda says - Ukraine is very much a democracy.

I swear I'm not trying to be a dummy here, but if Russia had funded one side of that civil war and it had won, and then they got to hand pick the next guy to run the country, would you have any doubts about the election being "free and fair"? Or in this case, what if they picked their guy(s) first, and then started to meddle in their civil war?

It is actually a bit surprising to me how many people I think are usually pretty smart on Twitter have had similar very bad takes trying to bend over backwards to justify Russian aggression.

Tankies I'm assuming? Political goals are super strong and often win over intelligence or logic or morals. In the most cynical view, they built up all that intellectual/social capital for this exact moment, to further their politics.

There is a really easy way of demonstrating that Ukraine is democratic. In 2019, Ukraine voted out Poroshenko who was the incumbent following 2014 and his party, and voted in Zelenskiy, along with his party largely consisting if political newcomers. The elections were independently verified as being free and fair and in fact what shady doings there were had actually been to help Poroshenko, who lost regardless. So in essence the USs guy -lost- which says it all. Overall no this analogy is not based in reality.

Worth noting that electoral results are not so much fixed in Belarus as entirely made up so the referendum is a formality and that will pass.

Obviously take it with a very large grain of salt, but the governor of Kharkiv is claiming Ukrainian victory there and describing mass Russian surrenders. Could be somewhat or fully propaganda of course.

Seems like most stuff from the Ukrainian side so far has been basically accurate while Russia has issued statements which turned out to be complete lies. So that report is probably accurate.
