I don't wanna be telling other people what to do and it's a bit hypocritical of me, but please get some sleep, play some games for a bit or something and just try and stay off twitter and the like for a few hours, Corrik. I know it's a constantly developing situation and a massive historical event but I'm pretty sure you've been looking at this stuff with a few hours break max since it broke out, and constantly digesting war footage and news is not gonna be conducive to good mental wellbeing.

Glad to hear it, take care man. Apologies if I overreached, many of my colleagues, some of whom are Russian, are (understandably) absolutely losing their shit over this, and I have Polish family near the Ukrainian border so I've been a bit on edge trying to make sure people aren't doomspiraling. My very elderly grandparents are terrified about it spilling over towards Krakw and having recently discovered social media, I think they've spent more time in the last day on facebook than the rest of their lives combined.

Sweden and Finland are in the EU so NATO membership is arguably not necessary. There is an agreement between NATO and the EU effectively for this reason.

Also it was Moldovan rather than Romanian so not NATO. The Turkish one (which was a cargo ship by the way, not a warship as mentioned here) was NATO however though not sailing under the Turkish flag.

UK says 450+ Russian casualties as of this morning. Obviously a western perspective but as close to an unbiased report as we will see for a while. Ukraine was saying 137 Ukrainian deaths last night which is likely accurate, if not lower than reality. So Id say no, we are looking at casualties well into the hundreds at least very likely higher.

For reference it took the US seven years to lose as many men in Afghanistan as Russia has here. That should give sone idea as to the speed and scale of this conflict.

If you're saying they should join right now, I highly doubt NATO would accept them as that would be an immediate and direct escalation, and by the terms of the treaty immedialy put all of NATO at war with Russia

Hard to say, Putin seems adament that they don't want any NATO assets sitting on the Russian border (Kaliningrad and the Baltics excepted I guess). I imagine they will either add not joining NATO as a term for surrender under penalty of full annexation, but who knows

Russia's whole intrusion started because of Ukraine's bid for NATO membership, if there's a surrender it will definitely be part of the terms.

That said NATO also has a clause where new countries cannot be added if they have any disputed territories, so unless if Ukraine plans on officially ceding all of their lost territory they wouldn't be able to join anyways.

Yes, that was the original question I posed. Makes sense that Russia would have no-NATO as a surrender term...but that kinda puts Ukraine in the same position they are now, where Russia could just waltz in again and take what they want.

I don't know. I think this whole situation sucks for Ukraine and no matter which way it goes they will continue to suffer.

It's hard to imagine how Russia didn't clear out all the anti-air and air capabilities of Ukraine. This is becoming a disaster for them. By some accounts, they haven't taken out a lot of airfields yet still either.

Russia hasn't invested greatly in its military since the end of the USSR. It also took the US 3 weeks to take Baghdad in 2003.

The US wiped all anti-air first though. Leaving them air capabilities is a major gaffe.

I'm still taking anything they say with a grain of salt.

You can't take any reports that are being posted to Twitter as fact. You basically need to rely on any official reports from a trusted source like the AP or Reuters, since they will at least do some digging before plastering unfounded claims everywhere.

Yes. Everything I post or is posted you should question. There is a lot of propaganda running around. A few former ministers and generals of Ukraine said people are getting a way bigger opinion of what is actually going on and likened Zelensky to Baghdad Bob. Basically, Ukraine is saying what we want to believe a lot.

For example, the Ghost of Kyiv stuff is completely fabricated. Granted, they didn't make that up. A youtuber did. But still.

Lots of videos and images being thrown around are from prior wars and not even this one. I do my best to parse out what is garbage, but I am not perfect.

United States says that only 1/3rd of Russias forces have even entered Ukraine as of now and they expect Kyiv to fall soon. So, I wouldn't expect a stunning win by Ukraine at this point.
