Is it a case of a series getting better as it goes on? 3>2>1?

I assume that you mean strictly the reboots? There is no real consensus, but 2 is generally regarded as the best of the reboot trilogy.

Except for Codename 47, all seven other main games and both spinoffs are worth playing to this day.

What KCF said, except that Absolution is pretty bad.

With the modern trilogy, they're all set up to the point that they're basically one big game with just each game mostly adding more levels and story, so it's more of a level-by-level quality situation than game by game. Definitely worth playing though

They're all on Game Pass now too. I'm excited to play them when I finish a few other games and finally have the time.

It was kinda dumb the trilogy didn't come with the DLC levels though.

Yeah, the reboot. Thanks!

I started Hitman a few weeks ago and I'm about to embark on my first real mission.

The reboot trilogy is fantastic, especially in hitman 3s engine.

Like others have said 2 is probably the most highly regarded, and is likely the most consistent. However, all 3 are worth playing. 1 reaches the same highs as 2 at times. 3 really shines when it deviates a bit from the formula of the other games. Still distinctly the same game, but clearly making an effort to not just retread old ground.

I had never played them until a year ago, when I played the whole trilogy straight through on PC, and they completely blew me away.

The first real mission is Paris. It's one of my absolute favorites in the trilogy, and really shines on replays, especially once you've grown more accustomed to the game.

I feel like I don't have enough patience or foresight yet to do this elegantly. Just garrotted the man when he was only with his bodyguard then ran away and changed my guise.

Thats the nice thing about the game, its built so you can do it patiently and elegantly or just pop someone in the head the first time you see them. Youll have to deal with a few more consequences when you do that, but unless you start compounding your mistakes you can usually recover.

I'd recommend playing the missions first, but check out the Hitman "Three Ways To Play" videos on Outsidexbox's Youtube channel. The three hosts each play through the same level, with the videos cutting between them to highlight the different approaches (usually Silent Assassin from Andy, covering for mistakes from Jane, and violent chaos from Mike). Very entertaining.

If you already own the older games, yes. If you dont you can pay for them as DLC for the new game

The Game Pass version gives you all three games levels, except for levels that were originally DLC

Does it matter if I play them via which game? Are there gameplay improvements that make it worth it to play the older missions on Hitman 3?

Each game engine is updated from the last, so you can play all main missions via 3's engine if you play via 3

having 1&2 in 3 takes up less hard drive space than having 1&2 in 2 and then 3 by itself, for example

Ah, thanks. I looked up some comparison videos and it seems Hitman 3's got better lighting and some visual effects but the gameplay is not much different. For now I'll stick with the respective games for their missions.

The Colorado mission is pretty challenging to get into the compound, but once I got the disguise it's been pretty ok so far. Also helps that the smuggled item dropoff point is actually really close to the starting place for once, so I can wield a sniper rifle.

Finished all main story missions, some more elegantly than others.

So far my ranking for the setting would be something like
Paris > Sapienza > Bangkok > Hokkaido > Marrakesh > Colorado

Sapienza has a really cool town, but the underground lab is really constricting.

would probs have Marrakesh above Hokkaido, but other than that it probs matches my rankings.
really liked the 2 tutorial missions as well but i don't know how i'd rate them compared to actual levels.

Gameplay wise, I don't feel strongly about Hokkaido vs. Marrakesh, but the visuals and hospital design gave Hokkaido the edge for me.

I'm thinking I'll move on to Hitman 2 next. After some snooping around the internet it seems that the main differences, gameplay-wise, are that mirrors now work (NPCs can notice Agent 47 through mirrors), there are bushes you can hide in, and there's a briefcase (unlockable?).

Miami was the first "I need a new PC" moment that led to me buying my current machine.
