The researchers found that the new materials elastic modulus a measure of how much force it takes to deform a material is between four and six times greater than that of bulletproof glass. They also found that its yield strength, or how much force it takes to break the material, is twice that of steel, even though the material has only about one-sixth the density of steel.

so like, at the same volume?

Yield strength of steel varies greatly depending on how you make it. I would assume they are looking at low strength steels, but that is still a very strong polymer. Steel is also orders of magnitude stiffer than bullet proof glass. Maybe I'll look at the study later for fun if I can get access.

Elastic modules and yield strength are material properties, both in force per unit area. So to find the yield force of a particular beam or something, you just multiply by the cross sectional area. For stiffness you also need the length of the object.

However, in the new study, Strano and his colleagues came up with a new polymerization process that allows them to generate a two-dimensional sheet called a polyaramide. For the monomer building blocks, they use a compound called melamine, which contains a ring of carbon and nitrogen atoms. Under the right conditions, these monomers can grow in two dimensions, forming disks. These disks stack on top of each other, held together by hydrogen bonds between the layers, which make the structure very stable and strong.

Oh neat, an aromatic C-N graphite analog.

Wow, it says it's ~70 ksi yield and ~1740 ksi stiffness. That is pretty insane. For reference, typical structural steel is around 50 ksi these days (and typically it is undesirable to go higher than that in building applications). It can get much higher than that, especially for steels you want to use for swords and stuff, but still. That elastic modules is a little less than half the typical modulus we might use for concrete.

The (non-replaceable) battery turns into a lithium hydride balloon in about four years.

Sodium batteries are coming soon. It's basically the same tech as lithium-ion batteries, except that sodium is everywhere and we don't need cadmium anymore somehow.

Hopefully they get this out into mass production ASAP.

There are plenty of uses for a material like this.

I wonder if this offers any benefits over carbon fiber. CF is getting cheaper and cheaper as it becomes more commonplace, and has been replacing heavy steel and aluminum parts in higher end cars for decades.
